Hi All! Not ready to start yet, still getting my snacks and TV arrangement settled, but this is how we will be watching together in half an hour, through comments on this post.
I love this style of sari, it’s called “9 yard sari”, it’s a Maharashtrian thing, long enough that you can wrap it around your legs and use it like pants. Also, it makes Rani’s booty go pop pop pop even more than usual!
I love the way Rani has such childish movements, like the way she falls onto her grandma, so you can feel her character as this young woman who is still a child at heart.
I HATE her co-worker! And she could so easily be someone I would like, if she were just a little more funky and bohemian and less irritating and nutty.
The co-worker seems more like a stereotype than a character, and even then an overly done one in an already melodramatic movie. Also, waaaaay too much overacting as well as the overbite. It’s too much!
Notice the subtle light to make Rani’s table and half of the room seem brighter and clearer than the rest, especially as she starts to smell the good scent.
Distraction: Prithvi clearly has natural chest hair in this scene, and yet later in the songs he is clearly waxed. How did they do that??? What movie magic was required???
Prithiviraj really bringing the tortured artist look, getting no sleep and can confirm that oil paints, as badly alcoholic they smell, they do have that something that makes them appealing to work with
Love the artist fetishising going on here from the paint, the dirt and then the real work. It’s like a Pinterest board with blue aesthetics and Prithiviraj
Fun bonus data: as part of the promotions, Rani gave all kinds of interviews about smelling and someone asked her which co-star smelled best…Shahrukh! Because he was so aware of his cigarette smell that he always wear a ton of the best sweetest smelling cologne
By the way, Prithviraj tends to only make movies in which his hero is tortured and miserable and never finds true happiness. Like, the guy who is separated from his sweetheart for 20 years and dies the day they are about to meet again.
So I love watching him be all happy and silly in this song. For once he can smile onscreen!

As I’ve been watching the only things I have to say are questions, so I wasn’t typing. BUT you answered on of my questions anyway! You’re psychic.

I don’t understand what father does. Lots of phones, but why?

He is retired from the phone company, and just loves fixing old phones and keeping them active.

I have to admit, I feel her father. I have 5 old fashioned phones in my own apartment, they are so cool looking!

Not sure if I would or would not want a job interview like this one.

That co worker is the only character in Hindi films who would be improved by being replaced by Johnny Lever. Man, that hurt saying that.

And now Rani is about to give her speech which is perfectly over dramatic in a way that makes us laugh at the character, but not be irritated by her

I love how garbage and stink are already echoing throughout the film as her greatest fears, and her dream is of a place clean and fragrant.

Compared to the co-worker Rani is practically subtle in her acting

I love the smell of my husband too. Though I don’t feel this man is as gorgeous as the mist makes him out to be.

‘Love at first smell’ indeed. It’s done like a good perfume add, but in a semi-realistic setting, also Prithviraj.

Other thing I wonder, did they find all these art installations in place at an art school and shoot there, or did they build them as sets?

If they built them they did a good job, I was admiring some of the art.

What does it mean to wear a vest under your shirt?

“vest”= Indian English for undershirt. So, a boring super buttoned down type.

Aha! Inaccuracy! He should smell bad, like paint. Although I guess everything smells like paint around her, so that is just a given.

The tea kid is talking Tamil to Prithvi and he is talking Tamil back. Rani is all interested that he speaks, only by preference in his native tongue.
