Suggestion from Shreyans Goenka, what are all the movies we can think of where the happy ending comes because God intervenes?
Just to start us off, there’s Mujshe Dosti Karoge, where the Sindoor magically falls on Rani’s part signifying that Hrithik should marry her.
And Hum Aapke Hain Koun where the Dog and the Idol exchange glances, and then the dog takes the love letter to the right person in order to Reveal All.
And now my mind is a blank. What else is there?
Rab ne banadi should count…God gave her the epiphany!

In Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo (btw I can’t believe they thought it’s a good title!) the hero says: God will solve it, and 1 minute later Gods solves it.

Well that’s handy! And all of this is just making me want to watch the movie-no-one-can-spell.

The title is akin to “once upon a time in hollywood” ; loosely translates to “In Vaikuntapuram(place) , back then”

Its an awesome title if you are a telugu person, if not its just greek!

No, not exactly. “Ala Vaikuntapuramulo” is the starting phrase of a very famous classic Telugu poem. It means “in Vaikuntam”, which is the abode of the god Vishnu. The refers to a famous story in the Srimad Bhagavatam, “Gajendra Moksham” (the salvation of the Elephant King), where the elephant gets caught by a crocodile in a lake, the two fight for a long, long, time, and then the elephant, feeling his strength is waning and he cannot fight any more, prays to Vishnu to save him. Then, “ala Vaikuntapuramulo”, i.e., in Vaikuntam, Vishnu, who was playing a game with his wife Lakshmi, suddenly heard this call for his help, and jumped up and dashed off to Earth without saying a word to anyone what he was doing, or taking his weapons, or making any preparations. Not knowing what was going on, his entire entourage followed him, and when he came upon the scene, he hastily donned his weapons (his celestial disc) and slew the crocodile, thus freeing and saving his devotee, the elephant. Now in the usual way of these stories, the crocodile was really supposed to represent the struggles that a soul goes through before finally being united with god.
Since this is such an extremely famous poem, even in these times when nobody in Telugu cinema seems familiar with any literature, I was curious what the movie was about, so watched the trailer. It seemed to be the usual Allu Arjun masala vehicle, so I figured someone just casually used a famous line they had heard somewhere as the title, without any further meaning. Now that people say that the ending has god intervening directly, I wonder how much of the rest of the original story has some parallel in the movie?

SPOILERS:
The movie hardly has something in common with the poem. The title (poem?) is used as a song in one of the scenes, when the hero finally is allowed to enter his real parents’s house. I was sure the poem will be about abducted infants and you are saying it’s about the elefant and the crocodile. 😉

Other things – I haven’t watched Baahubali for a while now but do I remember well that Shiva linga was important in the last fight between Baahubali and Bhalladeva?
In Pailwaan, Sudeep goes to save his daughter and fights with goons, when suddenly the wrestling “bat” with Hanuman imprinted on it, he used in the past, magicaly flights and arrives exactly when Sudeep is fighting. Thanks to it he wins. It’s not the end of the movie, but kinda because this film is odd.

I think there are quite a few Hindi movies in 80s and 90s where the almost dying hero’s (either battered by villain’s gang or on hospital bed facing a surgery) mother/wife sings an emotional song in front of God/Goddess in temple and the hero comes back to life and completes revenge (final fight) on villain.
Karan Arjun comes to mind quickly. May be Deewar too.

I think in Deewar, God fails to solve things. Amitabh prays to him, his mother survives, but everything else is still awful.

Good choices! Along those same “actual personification of God” lines, there is the 70s classic Jai Santoshi Maa where a goddess directly helps a housewife, and Thoda Pyar Thoda Magic where Rishi Kapoor God solves Saif and Rani’s romantic problems.

For “actual personification of God” there is also Oh My Kadavule (Forget Allu Arjun movie, this one is way way better and cuter)

There are tons of Telugu movies with god as a character, throughout the ages. One recent example some people here maybe familiar with is “Yamadonga”, directed by Rajamouli. Another very delightful film is “Sree Anjaneyam”, with the god Hanuman (or Anjaneya) coming to Earth to take care of and guide his devotee.

Yamadonga was great with the blessed necklace which saved the hero’s life.

Not the end, but KKHH has the magical prayer from a child trope that keeps Kajol from marrying Salman long enough for the rest of the movie to happen. I know there are other magical children…is it English Babu Desi Mem where the little boy is always praying at the shrine? And then he magically knows when his guardian needs to be rescued?

Oh yes! Praying children really do have special movie powers.
