THERE WILL BE AN INTERMISSION!!!! We will pause at the interval (an hour and 40 minutes into the movie, 4:40pm), and restart 10 minutes later (4:50pm) I will announce Woo-hoo, Karan Johar week grand finale!!!!! At 3pm Chicago time, I will hit “play” on the movie and start up the comments. You start at the same time and just comment along with us. Refresh regularly to see the new comments (might be worth it setting up a wordpress account to make it easier).
Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham! Available an almost every service, from Netflix to Prime. I’m excited!!!!
Karan talks about how this film was heavily inspired from Kabhi Kabhi. Shahrukh=Shashi and Amitabh=Amitabh. Right? As fathers and husbands?

Ooh really? So 30 years on he still sees Amitabh as the a-hole?

I love seeing Hrithik dance with Shahrukh, because you really feel Hrithik’s joy in just dancing when you put them next to each other.

I love that Kareena’s character is so over the top and self-obsessed, but we also see her choosing to spend all this time with her family. She’s not some shallow villain.

I love that we have that dialogue of “didn’t I keep telling you Anjali?” but we never saw those conversations. A little hint of the hidden life of these two women within the household, who see more than anyone gives them credit for.

We know the subtitles are saying “Hail India”, but it’s really “Hail Motherland”, right? Thus the double meaning with Krish singing for Kajol, and Kajol running up to rescue him?

And once again, Kareena is cute and loving with the little boy, without stopping her Poo-ness

Hrithik is so vulnerable here! I feel like Karan really brought out some “skinny kid with a stutter” realness in his performance.

Why are Hrithik’s nostrils flaring so endearing! In this and every other movie!

One of my favorite moments is Hrithik’s quick instinct to lie, like a little kid, when Shahrukh asks if Amitabh sent him.

I don’t think he knew before…

And yet, SO MANY PEOPLE DO!!!!
I think Hrithik handled it by knowing his sibling loved him best, but then he lost that, and had nothing to fall back on but obsessing over his looks

It’s weird that the subtitles don’t translate how they address each other. Like ‘brother’ instead of ‘Rahul’

This sequence just makes their London life look too nice. Punjabi couple to joke with, going to the mall as a family on weekends, how can being rich in a big house in India compare?

Props to Amitabh though, you see the doubt enter his eyes, then he goes cold again, then it comes back after the slap. Doubt and shame. Subtle, he’s a pro.
