Discussion Post: What Are Your Driving in the Summer With the Car Windows Down Songs?

This is a universal experience, right? Or at least a universal American experience (we do love our cars!)? The weather is warm and sunny, you get out your car, you roll down the windows, you blast music and just drive. And my question is, what music do you listen to?

Two years ago, I moved to a new apartment the first week of June. Which involved driving my car back and forth and back and forth and back and forth as I brought boxes and cleaning supplies and so on and so forth. And the song that kept me going through all those backs and forthses was the incomparable “Kerala Manninayi”

The year before that, my parents were hosting a massive party at the lake house on Saturday and told me I had to come up and help. Only a new Shahrukh movie was coming out on Friday. So I stayed up until 1am seeing the movie and writing the review, and then got up 5 hours later to drive to Wisconsin, and just for kicks I played the soundtrack of the movie along the way. Which is how I fell in love with the Jab Harry Met Sejal soundtrack, especially this song, “Hawayein”

And of course Yo Yo, always Yo Yo. I bought a “best of” CD from him which is the only CD I keep in my car at all times. He really writes the best “car songs”.

What are your Car Songs?

  1. Alas, nothing movie related. It’s always Meat Loaf and Springsteen. Bat Out of Hell and Thunder Road. I’ve gotten many a speeding ticket to Bat…

    • I’m just glad to hear I’m not the only person who has a car-only soundtrack.

  2. On longer car rides, I used to play the Shrek soundtrack for a while.

But the one song that gets me to roll down my window is O Humdum Suniyo Re from Saathiya:

  3. Always Ilaiyaraja – the greatest Film music director from India, in my personal opinion, more talented and better work than AR Rahman and RD Burman (I will not quote other music directors from current generation in same line). My pen drive has songs from ~300 movies (multiplied by average 5 songs per movie) out of 1000+ he composed.

  4. Ooh, I have whole playlists for these. Are we keeping it exclusive to Indian film songs? Cuz most of mine are in English.

It’s funny that you mention JHMS because most of that soundtrack screams summer to me. Safar, specifically, always comes up on shuffle when I’m on long drives to friends and I end up arriving after the sun has gone down. So it’s sealed itself in my mind as a driving song, but specifically at night.

Radha, on the other hand, is probably my ultimate summer Bollywood song. Not necessarily for driving, but for dancing in the sunlight.

    • Oh go ahead and give us your top driving songs in English! We already got some from Patricia Merry.

I can’t listen to Safar late at night while driving. My big problem is slowing down, listening to something nice and pleasant like Safar would be great if I were a passenger, watching the road go by out my window. But as a driver, it would just make me slow down to 20 mph as I entered a meditative state.

      • Yay! I have separate summer playlists and driving playlists, haven’t updated either one in years, but let’s see if I can narrow it down to summer driving!

“In A Sense” – Young Man

“Road to Ride On” – Joshua Radin

        “Silhouettes” – Colony House

“Sound of a Broken Heart” – Jukebox the Ghost

“We are Only Getting Better” – Joshua Radin

        “Renegades” – X Ambassadors

        “Sugar” – Robin Schulz

“I Need a Good One” – The Avener

        “Style” – Taylor Swift
