Friday Watchalong Here! Humpty Sharma, Starting at 2pm Chicago Time!

Woo-hoo! Courtney’s birthday, party time! And Humpty time! 2pm Chicago time this week (an hour earlier than usual), and a very good movie. I’ll start the comments off at 2pm and you all can keep commenting along.

Humpty Sharma! So much better than the title implies. If you’ve already seen it, you probably already love it. If you haven’t seen it, prepare to love it.

  1. I really need to figure out how to braid my hair like Alia’s in this movie! I am terrible at doing hair so it will never happen, but I can still hope.

  2. It’s just a few seconds, but so well done. They are in love, they are making love, and it isn’t scary or hard, it just sort of flows from what they are feeling.

    • Maybe that’s why this scene is so good. Incredible intimacy and chemistry without the incredibly high stakes of what they’re actually doing.

    • I wonder how much Varun being in a committed relationship already changed the filming experience? For him, he had something real to draw on. And for Alia, she could be completely open and give in to her character because she knew it wasn’t real. Does that make sense maybe?

  3. This is the important bit really. I mean, for them. Sex is sex, but now they are so open and vulnerable and loving, and this is the moment that will never go away for the rest of their lives.

  4. It breaks my heart EVERY TIME when he wakes up and she’s not there. I could watch 2 and a half hours of Varun and Alia cuddling in bed and being sweet with each other.

  5. I wonder what Alia meant by leaving something behind, probably not her heart, considering what she said after. Virginity is too vulgar.

  6. THE CAR! The first time I watched this, I couldn’t get over it. Everyone I’ve shown this movie to hasn’t been as strongly impacted by that scene, and I felt like I had to explain it.

  7. I mentioned Ashutosh and his sexiness before, but I think I need to take a moment to acknowledge that Alia’s Mom is really really pretty. A very attractive older couple.

  8. Another DDLJ gender flip! He is the one all “and then we will elope, happy happy!” and she is the one who is all “nope, can’t do it, must take the hard way”

  9. I think Ashutosh might have a little unresolved anger and protective instincts over his jerk son-in-law. In my sequel, he will come to America and misunderstand something and threaten Fiance and the big sister will overhear and finally understand how much he loves her and how angry he is about what happened to her.

  10. Feels a little Wizard of Oz “the way home was there all along” that he could have just said “the reason I am better is because she loves me more” right now and the movie would be over.

    • He needed that time for Ashtoush to see that they’re similar. I feel like that’s also part of the reason why he understood at the end.
Also Varun could have easily taken it literally. Why is Angad bad, instead of why Varun is better.
