Community wedding: shared cost for a big fun wedding and starting out the young couples, so the poorer couples of the community can still have a nice wedding. Everyone donates money so the brides get pretty saris and there is a big food and stuff. It sounds nice.

Srilakshmi, the bride, is the young woman who was at the bus stop and later did some mending for the heroine. So slightly old to be unmarried, and one of the poorer families if she has to do sewing to make extra money. A kind thing to marry Giri to her, and a nice girl, a perfectly reasonable decision on his mother’s part.
