So this is like 2024, right? So we should have giant see through screens in all of our kitchens very soon now?

Vedic Mathematics?! Is this a thing? Margaret?

It is a thing in the same way “Vedic History” and “Vedic Science” are a thing. So, some weird dude gives a talk at conferences but it really doesn’t hold up.

But, Harvard doesn’t actually have that great of a math department? Which I guess is why they are hiring this dim young dude. He could never get a job at MIT or Princeton.

I was JUST thinking this!!! If they wanted to make it believable say MIT or Carnegie Mellon

Also, when my sister was at MIT the math department had an annual Valentine’s Day Dance Dance Revolution Contest with the Harvard Math Department, and half the time Harvard didn’t even show up and MIT won by default. Why would you want to go to a university that can’t even win a DAnce Dance Revolution contest?

Why would you EVER miss Dance Dance Revolution! Stupid people!

I KNOW!!!! What else could you possibly be doing on Valentine’s Day? The MIT team always showed up.

Well I had no idea Harvard didn’t have a great math department. Do you happen to know what East Coast College has the best Marine Biology Department?
LikeLike
No idea!!! When my sister was college shopping, we got the top ten Math run down and it was surprising, so the math rankings stick in my head.

I think Duke is supposed to have one of the best Marine Biology Departments.

I just texted a friend and was told UNC Chapel Hill and Boston College are also supposed to have excellent marine biology programs.

Vedic Math from Wikipedia:
“Vedic Mathematics is a book written by the Indian monk Bharati Krishna Tirtha, and first published in 1965. It contains a list of mathematical techniques, which the author claimed were retrieved from the Vedas and supposedly contained all mathematical knowledge. These claims have been since rejected in their entirety.”

What I like is that Sid is beginning to ignore work for personal. He just hasn’t figured out yet that your friend’s biggest life challenge is never as important as your son’s soccer game.
What I don’t like is Sid’s Future Cardigan

In defense of Sid, there are a LOT of soccer games.

But he missed the last one!!! And his son wears glasses!! GLASSES! And he PROMISED.

I’m a little mad at this film, he can’t exactly make the best decisions when he doesn’t know his schedule or what he is supposed to do.
LikeLiked by 1 person
But that’s the point! Life moves fast, you have to just deal with what is in front of you. If your son says “promise me you will be at my soccer game”, then you don’t need to know anything else, that is obviously the most important thing.

Don’t promise if you don’t know your schedule I guess.

It’s not great that Ram Kapoor is all up in their business, but on the other hand it’s not like Sid is going to tuck in his own daughter.

Some where in this sequence we see the son’s partner. I think it is when Sid is looking up at them being a family.

I love this part! Kat found a great guy. She moved on. Kat and her husband continued to have a relationship with Sid’s mother and brother.

The brother giving it to Sid straight!!!! This is what is needed in more movies! Not the coddling BS we usually see.

More importantly, did you see the scene that shows the son’s partner putting his arm around him and pulling him close?

Yes! And the daughter is married with a baby? Everything worked out for the best as soon as Sid left the family.

YES!!! I really love that the son is shown to be clearly queer/gay/pan and it is not a big deal. Everyone just loves and accepts him and his partner. It is just so normal. I love love love it!

I really like this conversation, which is where I feel the movie missed something. We could have lost the friends and had more with the brother. Or something. Such a rich relationship, and we only get a glimpse of it.

Why is this movie set in London. What does that symbolize?
LikeLike
Sorry Cambridge…

I think it symbolizes that the writer/director has a British background. And maybe also a general sort of disconnected feeling? Life moves faster there, and slower in India? Something about Ram Kapoor’s point of London being cold and lonely way at the start?
