Discussion Post: What Fictional Love Triangle Would You Change the Ending (Jab Tak Hain Jaan, Chandni, Little Women, How I Met Your Mother, Etc.)

This is a suggestion from Saira, she used as an example Mansfield Park where it felt like Austen was going to put Henry and the heroine together, and then got bored and rushed the ending and changed it. And I immediately thought of SO MANY OTHERS. Here is a list of mine, feel free to share yours.

Jab Tak Hain Jaan

Shahrukh and Anushka not only had better chemistry, they also made more sense as a couple.

How I Met Your Mother

Robin and Barney grew into the perfect couple together, there was no reason to break them up LITERALLY IN THE LAST 10 MINUTES OF THE SHOW.

Devdas and Chandramukhi

Every version every time, they are better together. Only Kashyap got it right.

Every Ranbir Heroine and Anyone Besides Ranbir

They can always do better, whether it is Dips and Rana in YJHD or Nargis and her husband in Rockstar.

Did you know Rana Daggubati was a part of Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone's THIS blockbuster film?

Duckie and Andie in Pretty in Pink

Duh. Pretty much everyone agrees on this.

Nutan and Dharmendra in Bandini

This one SO MUCH!

If I had to pick one as Most Infuriating, it almost a tie between HIMYM and Bandini. But in the end I think I have to give it to Bandini, just because Ashok Kumar is such a horrible drag.

  1. I’m piggybacking on my older man/younger woman comment in another post, but in Dear Zindagi, I wanted Alia to try to seduce SRK. She’s attracted but toying; he’s tempted and falls in love. In the end, as a decent man and good doctor who understands his patient, he sticks to professional ethics and hides his feelings. But it would have been great to see ShahRukh agonizing over the dilemma. He does that so well.

    • I am with you! We have had this debate before and it is pretty split between “yes! The chemistry was great!” and “ew, a doctor-patient?” But I land on “chemistry was great!” Give it a year, have them run into each other again, it could happen!

    • Let’s say a triangle between Alia Shahrukh and Alia. Really his competition was her learning to love/focus on herself.

  2. I’m on a Jane Austin kick. And in Sense and Sensibility Marianne should not have ended up with Colonel Brandon. He was too old for her / she was too young for him. She was too young for anyone, 17 year olds should not marry.

But in Devdas I wanted SRK with Aishwarya, because they were HOT together. But he died alone where he basically deserved to be. I feel like I’m reading and watching a lot of women pine for unworthy men lately.

    • Go back to watching the best bits of Pride and Prejudice again! Darcy is SO worthy.

Also, did you watch the Emma Thompson Sense and Sensibility? Colonel Brandon in that is Alan Rickman, so he is Beyond Age so far as I am concerned.

      • I watched the 2008 S & S miniseries. I am contemplating paying for the Emma Thompson version, but I remember just being so annoyed through the whole movie because she was so OLD. I also saw Persuasion, with a pitiable main actress who didn’t match the picture in my head at all. I think I’m going to head to Emma now. There is a brand new one that I’ll have to pay for, so maybe I’ll see if there are any old ones I can watch first. But before I do that I’m sure I can find some clips of Alan Rickman as Colonel Brandon on YouTube to watch first.

I HATE Amazon, they told me half way through S & S that it was no longer available, except that I had paid for BritBox, so eventually I was able to get it going again but the whole riggamaroll gets old.

Jane Austin has a thing for socially awkward men.

BTW – DARCY – Mr. Darcy beloved by all women, is in fact a silent taciturn prick. He felt she would accept his proposal of marriage because he was rich and of higher status. Only when she said NO did he actually start being nice to her. And then he used his money to help her family and she fell in love. Mr. Darcy…. The moral of Mr. Darcy is that money will get you a bride…. But I do kinda like him.

      • Colonel Brandon in the miniseries is younger and cuter and more charming that gray around the temples Alan Rickman. YUCK!

  3. One love triangle that infuriates me is KKHH. Salman was a wonderful person who cared about Kajol and treated her with respect…instead she chose a self-obsessed man who constantly derides her and spent 20 years not giving a damn about her feelings….

Then I would also change Taal…why go back to Akshay Khanna?? How much does she even know that guy?? She spent like a few days frolicking in the mountains with him that’s all…and the slightest point of family tension he turned on her…and then you have this other guy who treats her with respect and empowers her….but no go running back to the lover who sings sad romantic songs…ugghh I can bet anything that marriage will not last…

Ooh and another random ending I would change is Judaai…why does Urmila just leave in the end? Sridevi did not deserve Anil…she sold her husband….and anyway Urmilla was a way better wife…they should have just stayed together happily ever after and let Sridevi repent

    • Big YES for all those!
Taal is such a pointless and infuriating movie (the music is good, but the plot?) It’s hard to find a movie with worse couple and love story.

Judaai – If I remember well Sridevi not only sold her husband but also the kids. She doesn’t deserve her family and should stay alone forever.

    • Disagree with KKHH, although agree Salman was a wonderful person, I think SRKajol were Meant To Be and if Kajol had married Salman, she would have doomed them both to misery.

Taal, on the other hand!!! Absolutely agree! Aish and Anil had interests in common and knew each other and were planning a life together, Akshaye was just some super romantic guy with a butt chin.

  4. JTHJ. SRK and Kat were so stiff and boring in comparison to SRK and Anushka, that I don’t understand how we were supposed to root for them.
