Yaaaaaay, Friday WatchAlong on a Friday!!!! And unless my plans change, I should be all relaxed and stuff for this movie, because I scheduled a massage for 1pm (did I tell you I woke up on Wednesday with my neck so messed up I couldn’t move my head?).
Dil! On Netflix! It’s Dumb! It’s Fun! The Songs are great!
At 3pm Chicago time, I will put up an “And Play!” comment and we will go from there!
Ohhhh, the heart thing. I forgot about the heart thing, too.

I went back to look at this comment again because I could not for the life of me figure out what Madhur Jaffrey had to do with parathas. I only knew her as an actress in Merchant-Ivories and the like! I guess I’ll have to look for her cookbooks when our library opens back up.

I know this is crazy talk, but seeing as Madhuri is just a college freshman, maybe everyone can relax and NOT WORRY about getting her engaged?

I do enjoy the cynicism of this movie. More Anupam faking being a saint! Less Anupam jumping around at parties!

That view of the beggars chasing after them through the rear window is amazing. Also: this car is much better soundproofed than mine.

It’s a think in “Rangeela” too, which this song somehow reminds me of. I actually always wonder if the opening bit of “Mangta Hai Kya” was meant to be a bit of a nod to this picturization, with the style of lighting and just the single dancer rehearsing on a stage and so forth. It’s “played straight,” though, which is a big difference.

I have htought about this DEEPLY, and I think if I were in a 90s college movie, I would rather go to Ooty than Shimla or Goa. Feel free to disagree.

I would love Ooty or Shimla for the weather and the scenery. But I would go to Goa for the food and the beaches! Nothing beats a Goan fish thali in my opinion!

So I was just watching THIS scene, but then spouse wanted to go to sleep so I left the room and told him this was from the pre “me too” time. ANd he said “Oh so it was from when rape was funny?” which doesn’t quite, but almost nails it.

Do you think there is an intentional metaphorical meaning to this being the same shed Anupam dreamed about in the opening? Or just cheap reuse of sets?
LikeLike
I wish I could believe it was metaphorical. And I know no one wants to talk about it, but Aamir’s not so little speech… Is consensual pre-marital sex as destructive for a woman as rape? I mean clearly she would be utterly useless as a human being if she were raped – does that apply to all sex? Would she be useless if she had a previous boyfriend? Or is it just rape that completely turns women into pointless beings?

Aside: I’m checking my e-mail and also getting notifications from you guys (obviously). Momentarily the top e-mail seemed to read “but there’s SO MANY WHITE PEOPLE,” but then it reloaded and the next thing my eyes landed on was “submerge them in cold water.” I thought, isn’t submerging white people in water what Goa is for in the first place–?

I thought he kissed her on the lips at some point. I might be wrong. But generally, I remember Aamir being one of the first actors who had at least one on-the-lips kiss with his heroine in most of movies.
