Discussion Post: Which Director Do You Want to Make Your Life Story?

Thanks Miss Braganza for the idea! I love this question! And I suspect many others at DCIB will also love this question.

For me, absolutely Sekhar Kammula! Directed Fidaa, and Anand, and Godaveri, and so many others. Interesting women who are people, and get dreamy really nice dudes as their husbands, and are surrounded by warm caring communities of friends and relatives, and just sort of enjoy life.

Fidaa (2017) - IMDb

Second choice, Farah Khan! I will be slightly objectified and my romance will be weird, and there will probably be a fight scene at some point, but my life will be filled with bright colors and happy endings and Boman Irani, so it’s all good.

Bonus question, LAST choice director:

Karan Johar!!!! Sure, my coats will be AMAZING, and I may get a happy ending eventually, but only after YEARS of angst and misery and beautifully filmed heartbreak. NOT WORTH IT!!!!

  1. The females come to mind right away, Mira and Zoya, etc. But im going to risk a thumbs down and go with Nitin Kakkar. I know Jakky Bhagnani šŸ˜” produces some of his stuff and started in that awful Mitron, but Nitin is so cute and he did Notebook which I loved. He seems to have an innate understanding of the human condition and views the foibles of men and women both realistically and forgivingly.

    • Oh! The Notebook! I love The Notebook! I would be very happy with a life that was fulfilling and useful and pretty too.

  2. Gauri Shinde, just like Shekar Kammula she shows interesting, good women who are people and have passion. There are some peoblems in their lifes but the end they find the balance and hapiness.

    • YES! Only, if your life is a Guari Shinde movie, you will always have the Hotter Guy just out of reach (French Dude, SRK) while you have to settle for Okay Guy (Husband, ARK)

  3. Imtiaz Ali or Shoojit Sircar. I love them both. Imtiaz has such complex women in his work nowadays and he treats them so respectfully. Even after so much tragedy or sadness in their lives they grow and get a happy ending that is earned. Shoojit on the other hand has such real characters with their own quirks and everything is about something greater. Both have such layers and deep meanings in their movies with great female characters and great songs to boot in both of their movies. Agh! I will stay with the “or” choice, but this is a hard one because I love them both.

  4. Going to say Anjali Menon, on the basis of Bangalore Days. I would have strong, complex family and friend relationships, and go on interesting interior journeys before getting a mostly happy ending.

  5. My first thought was Farah. Iā€™d like to live in one of her movies where everything is colorful, wacky and full of fun dancing. No second-guessing myself and no big questions to ponder besides getting rid of unquestionably bad villains.

    • Yes! The blacka nd white morality of Farah World is very tempting!

  6. Still sticking with my previous answer of Soojit, on account of how flawed I am, but now I’m also thinking Zoya. Her female characters are so smart and complex.

  7. Realistically Speaking – Zoya or Farhan should direct my life. They are the only ones who can capture my “problems of the privileged” while still making me come across as a likable human. My life would be filled with fun vacations, interesting romances, sophisticated (but practical) houses..but the stakes will be very low – Should he attempt to defend his Ph.D. dissertation, or should just go on a vacation to Europe?? Here is a lovely background song as he mulls over this very important decision.

Ideally Speaking – I want Raju Hirani to direct my life. Because I want a hagiography about myself…I want someone to depict me as a perfect superhero who inspires everyone around them…I want to be this great leader solving a social issue (maybe Animal rights? or Food Waste?) …and most importantly I want my mistakes written off and blamed on other people…

    • You forgot the best part about a Hirani movie! You get a wonderful person falling in love with you through almost no effort on your part. Oh, and also, all your problems/the world’s problems can be solved by a simplistic mantra.
