Saturday WatchAlong: Dil Dhadakne Do! Starting at 7:30am! For Genevieve’s BIRTHDAY!!!

Happy birthday Genevieve!!!!!! And thank you for picking such a great movie! I look forward to a lively debate between me, who is sympathetic to Anil Kapoor, and everyone else, who hates him.

Dil Dhadakne Do! It’s on Netflix in America, and probably other places in other places. Great movie, great songs, mixed cast, sexy Anil Kapoor.

At 7:30am Chicago time, I will put up an “and PLAY!” comment and we will go from there!

(also, Genevieve, refresh the site about 15 minutes after the movie is over, I’ve got another present for you)

  1. Oh oh! Important data drop! Shefali had two kids at 22, meaning she and Anil got married VERY young. No wonder their marriage fell apart and turned all weird.

  2. Anushka saying Tum log ek dusre se bat nahi karte ho kya? (Does no one in this family talk to each other?) is everything we were all thinking! Another dialogue I repeat often in real life.

    • And no one talks to HER!!!! That’s the part I don’t like about this bit, how hard would it have been for Farhan to say to Anushka, “by the way, to help out a friend I am pretending to date her as cover for her secret relationship”?

  3. This hospital room scene. It is such a physical relief for me. All the tension in the family is felt in my shoulders, and once they all talk about it it is like I can physically relax.

    • So much more realistic than Indian hospital scenes often are. I used to make that once a Hindi film enters a hospital, you have to forget all your common sense. Maybe it helps that really they’re still on the ship.

      • I am again giving Reema and Zoya all the credit for taking this absurdly rich family cruise trip and yet making so much of it so realistic.

  4. This is the scene where I feel it is most obvious that PC is just not on the same level as an actor as the other 3. Not a PC slam exactly, just that if you watch Ranveer and Shefali and Anil, they are using every part of their face, constantly changing micro-expressions, just so much to watch! And PC is just standing in the corner with one expression. They are all SO GOOD and she is average.

  5. Yaaaaaaay!!!! The scene where everyone likes Anil a little bit, not just me! See his deep insecurity? He didn’t cheat because he didn’t want his wife, he cheated because he thought she didn’t want him.

  6. Also, my theory is that Anil cheated once just to feel young, Shefali found out and didn’t confront him but instead started pulling away from him and punishing him, and so Anil kept cheating because it made him feel better, until it became a habit. If she had confronted him the first time, made it clear that she knew and cared, he wouldn’t have continued.

      • Oh yeah! Absolutely! He still shouldn’t be cheating. But I find it more interesting to think of a complicated motivation, he isn’t cheating just because he wants to cheat, there is a little more there.

  7. Okay, Zarina, Anil, and Rahul, rank their horribleness!!!! I think I would go Zarina first, then Rahul because he is Zarina’s creation, and then Anil because he is all messed up inside but has good instincts.

  8. This scene kind of bothers me. On one hand, finally Anil sticks up for his daughter. But it takes Rahul almost physically abusing her but Anil to get there. PC telling him she was miserable in her marriage was not good enough for him. The psychological and mental taunts and abuse wasn’t good enough for him.

    • Agree. I see it as more that this is the moment when he understands all the things that PC has been saying and feeling this whole time, not just about the arm grab. Kind of like Thappad, it’s not about the slap, it’s about what the slap represents in terms of the whole attitude.

  9. After seeing everyone being all nasty to each other this whole movie, I kind of love how they all immediately gather around and support in this scene. I actually believe it too, they are a complicated combination of vipers and humans.

    • Yes! They have so many issues, yet they are family and will be there for each other when there is a crisis.

A bit more sinister view is like the one from Cake. The rich parents will always protect their children and do what whatever it takes (fraud, bribe, threaten, throw someone else under the bus) to keep them out of prison. Nothing is out of the realm of possibility when it comes to protecting your children.

  10. If this weren’t a big luxury fun cruise ship, I would be irritated by stopping the ship For Love. But it’s just a bunch of rich people on vacation being inconvenienced, so who cares?
