Happy Sunday!!!! Our first Sunday watchalong in a while. In honor of Rachel’s birthday. And in honor of me FINALLY getting someone to watch Kabhi Alvida na Kehna with me.
It’s on youtube, it’s on googleplay, it’s on Netflix, and it’s probably on einthusan!!!! You have no reason not to watch it! Except for maybe that you don’t enjoy it! In which case you can watch it and hate on it! So, HA! Still no excuse!
At 10am Chicago time I will put up an “and PLAY” comment and we will keep going from there!
Here! Happy birthday, Rachel!! š

This scene is so great. This is the first scene that really feels like it is getting at the movie Karan wanted to make. The whole “5 million sports STAR” and “sex workers everywhere” and “Top Fashion Magazine” opening intros were stupid, but just two people talking about love and marriage and friendship on a bench, is nice.

This scene is brilliant. It sets up the tone for the entire movie. Neither of them are in love with their spouses.

It’s what would have happened if Hrithik and Kareena would have actually gotten married in Mujse Dosti Karogi.

Or Akshay and Madhuri in DTPH. But somehow it worked out in Sargam!

My favorite dialogue during this interaction is Rani asking what happens if she finds love after marriage and SRK saying she wont if she doesn’t look for it. So much to dissect there.

Rani – DO NOT GET MARRIED TO ABHISHEK! Amitabh and Abhishek will support you if you just speak up! You are about to ruin two lives!

Like Dil Chahta Hai! When Preity sad she didn’t want to get married, and her foster parents/in-laws were all “we feel so bad that you felt so bad! Of course we will always love you! We should have shown that better!”

I blame Amitabh at least partially! Obviously, his son was going to turn out like this!

I kind of love the film for that little thing and wish they had more of it. So often the barren woman is set up as “she is letting down her husband” so Abhishek is trying to be nice and saying “I honestly don’t care”. But, what about a woman’s right to want to have children just for herself?

Abhishek is just like his dad! I have no sympathy for him

There’s a gotta be a version of this movie where the seemingly uncaring cool spouses (Abhishek and Preity) are actually faithful and in love, and then find out that their boring grumpy spouses are having an affair, and fall in love with each other.

I love how the requirements to be hired to this fashion magazine for white people is to be tall, blonde, and as white as snow. They look like clones.

“bad mother who buys love with money” I would maybe agree with that if his primary caregiver parent wasn’t SO MUCH WORSE.

Is the little kid supposed to be a bit of Karan? On one hand, from all accounts, Karan’s parents were very supportive and lovely. However, maybe he is projecting how other kids bullied him?
LikeLike
Ooo! I hadn’t thought about that at all! Also from Karan’s account, his mother was stricter and had higher standards for him than his father, who more tended to indulge him. So maybe, SRK=Hiroo, Preity=Yash

Maybe but the whole “next time I may as well put a dress on you if you want to play the violin” is what makes me think he is showing how he was bullied.

A few years back, I saw a kid screaming while being pulled from a car and had a moment of “are they being kidnapped?” And then I saw the car was parked in front of a dance studio and the kid was in a leotard. So I guess they just didn’t want to go to dance class!

What is with this wacky humor scene in the middle of a drama about emotions and relationships?

If you had to choose between this movie with the inappropriate humor, of the top costumes, and so on. Or Ae Dil Hai Mushkil which was tonely consistant the whole time. Which would you choose?
I think I would still pick this one because I just find Rani and SRK so much more sympathetic than stupid Ranbir.

Abhishek does a really really good job mixing together a mature confident together man in public, with a sexually frustrated but also strangely childish man in private. this relationship is TOXIC for him!!!

If Rani had only spoken up before they were married! We know from Rani’s perspective that she was not in love. But maybe Abhishek was not either but knowing she is an orphan and can’t have kids, he couldn’t just abandon her? Not a good reason to marry her but I would have loved to know Abhishek’s reason for marrying Rani.

He said he asked for 3 years, so I always thought he was truly in love/lust with her. If nothing else he is definitely in lust. Maybe just simple thinking? He knows her, he is attracted to her, his father will approve. And then after they get married, he conscientiously falls in love with her the way he is supposed to, but doesn’t understand that she is more complicated than that.
