Pandemic Check In Post: Is Anyone Else Experiencing These 3 Weird Specific Physical Reactions?

Let’s take it as a given that we have anxiety and worries and etc. etc. Forget all that! There are three very specific things I have noticed in myself, and am hearing from more of my friends than I would have expected.

Back Problems

Not like “slipped disc”, but like messed up muscles. I have never had such sore painful muscles and they just don’t seem to be going away! And I am hearing this from friends too, necks that are stiff, beds that are suddenly uncomfortable, etc. etc. I’m guessing it’s the same combo that’s making my problems happen, all day hunched over a computer, and then all night hunched over the same computer doing Zoom calls and Netflix Party and whatever social life you can have. And then on the other hand, suddenly wanting to move furniture and organize that closet and so on. Anyway, anyone here having suddenly sore muscles all the time?

Eye problems

I had that day or so when I couldn’t blog because looking at a computer screen was too painful, and then I went to the eye doctor and learned that I had problems with my close vision for the first time in my life. I had a co-worker who had to leave work after a half day because she couldn’t see her computer screen any more. She had an emergency eye appointment, also needed new glasses, and was warned that she needs to take screen breaks. Anyone else have similar? Sudden eye problems to the point that it hurt to look at a screen?

Vivid dreams

No idea what causes this. Overactive imagination thanks to boredom? Weird sleep patterns because you never really get out of the house? Anyway, for the past year, I have had more clear and vivid dreams than ever before in my life. A lot of them about activities I used to do and can’t any more (going to the movies, visiting my sister, etc.). How about you?

  1. Yes, yes, and yes. You are not alone. Of course, if I think on it, these weirdnesses can be due to something other than the virus/quarantine/vaccination conglomerate. For me, old age is always a good answer. But recently I’ve had 3-5 days of rotator cuff agony like never before (all better now, thank you cortisone) i’m lazier than usual, and
have been having very strange early morning REM type dreams.
We are all living thru most unusual times.

    • Yes! The dreams are so odd! Everyone I’ve talked to has experienced this phenomenon. I look forward to 10 years from now when sleep scientists figure out what is triggering it. Maybe it’s healthy? Maybe our brains should be having intense REM dreams every night but usually we are all full of too much stuff happening in life to let it flow? Being home all the time and only interacting with close family lets it flow?

  2. Yesterday I had a very nice and romantic dream about Arjun Kapoor. Not sure if it’s because of pandemic or because I’m subconsciously excited for Sardar Ka Grandson.

    • See, I don’t get any nice and romantic dreams! Just get working through anxiety and worries kind of dreams. I forgot my mask, I’m seeing a friend for the first time, my backyard has turned into water, fun stuff like that.

  3. I get motionsickness, in cars, on boats, on planes, on swings. Well, lately I’ve been getting motionsick scrolling down the computer screen! And I’m not even on the computer for work or anything, but helping my son look for scooters that he won’t break gave me a headachy nauseous feeling. Likewise lots of vivid dreams, even now, when truthfully my community is ALMOST back to the way things were before. Except the 6 year old got sick over the weekend so everyone except the vaccinated adults are on quarantine until his test result comes back. Almost back, but not quite.

    • Isn’t it funny how the computer stuff is cumulative? I had no particular issues for the first 10 months, and then all of a sudden 10 months of slightly more computer time can falling down on me with massive eye strain and headache and stuff. And I have no idea if this is permanent or not. If I ever get back to a schedule where I am on the computer 8 hours and then in Life without screens, will I not have to worry about eye strain and blue light? Or will it always be something I have to watch out for? Wouldn’t actually be that terrible. A little inconvenient, but probably good to have my eyes say “nope, Margaret, time to go for a walk”.

Thank you for confirming vivid dreams! What is UP with that? And at this point, I’ve got like a whole series of dreams? Like I will have a dream in which (during the dream), I remember something else that I had done but it was a thing I did in another dream? I had a dream recently about going to a movie theater during the pandemic, in which I thought “Well, it will work out because the last time I went to a movie, it was fine”. But that was ANOTHER dream! And again, maybe this is just my life? My subconscious mind has rediscovered dreaming and won’t stop?

  4. I’m starting to dream actual stories, like ones that don’t even feature myself. Then again, maybe I always have and I’m just paying more attention to my dreams out of boredom.

    • I like this theory! I think I will adopt it as my new most logical explanation. It’s not the dreams that have changed, it’s our ability to focus and remember them.
