Wednesday Watching Post: What Are You Watching and Reading and Thinking and Listening To on This Sleepy Day?

Happy Wednesday! I’m sleepy! No reason, just woke up and didn’t want to get out of my nice warm bed.

I’ll start!

Watching: Continuing my Marvel catchup! Saw Thor Ragnorak and Ant Man and Black Panther, now doing Ant Man and Wasp. It’s true, Infinity War is a lot better after watching Ragnorak. Black Panther has a big Michael B Jordan problem though. As in, Michael B Jordan is the most ridiculously charismatic and charming movie star we have had for a long time and I just don’t care about anyone else when he is onscreen. BIG MISTAKE!!!

Reading: Nothing! Did I mention I’m sleepy? Oh, except for coverage of the Ben Affleck-Jennifer Lopez reunion. Why do I care about this? Does anyone else care about this? And is it real or fake?

Thinking: Next week I am taking a mini hotel break and I cannot WAIT!!!! This summer is so overwhelming, what ever everyone I know moving and still working from home and this that and the other thing. I just want to go to a hotel and sleep in a big bed with a good mattress. Did I mention I am sleepy today?

Listening: Sleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeepy

Now, question for you! Beyond the “does anyone else on DCIB care about the Bennifer thing?” question. It’s Sonakshi Sinha’s birthday! Quick, what is your favorite movie of hers?

Easy-peasy, Akira! If you haven’t seen it, rush right out and watch it RIGHT NOW.

  1. I have seen only 4 Sonakshi movies and one of them was Kalank, so I don’t have much to chose from, but I think I will say Happy Phirr Bhag Jayegi is my favourite. Lootera is beautiful and she is stunning in it but it was so sad.
Your question reminded me that I must watch Ittefaq, Tevar and Welcome to New York. Wouldn’t the latter be good for a watchalong? There are so many cameos.

    • You should DEFINITELY see Tevar!!!! It’s an Arjun K movie, how have you not watched it yet?

      • I saw the trailer of Tevar like 500 times but never felt like watching entire movie. I think it’s Manoj’s character who turns me off.

  2. I have watched a movie with great potential but boring execution yesterday, and thought you would write it so much better. It was punjabi movie Kuriyan Jawan Bapu Preshaan. If I remember well the title means more or less – The father of young women is always worried, or something like this. It’s about a widower who has 3 daughters. He loves them very much but is always very stressed because his coworker keeps telling him how difficult the girls are and how easy is to lose the honour because of them.
The oldest daughter is already married but she left her in laws home shortly after the wedding because she heard her mother in law talking bad about her and her father. She now lives with her father and sisters again. Her husband is nice, loves her and wants her back but she is too proud to come back.
The middle daughter is a school topper and one of the best students in Punjab. She is the most shy and gullible one.
The youngest is a tomboy and sporty type. She practices boxing.
I loved all female characters and how they were written. Unfortunately after the family is shown almost nothing happens and the movies becomes very boring. But it could be so good, with those colorful girls and insecure men.

    • It could be so good!!!! athlete youngest daughter conspires with younger brother of husband to bring the couple back together and in the process falls in love with younger brother. Middle daughter is tricked by a trickster gigolo who was hired by the Evil Mother-In-Law to romance the oldest sister but thinks teh middle sister is the oldest one. Lots of angst as he realizes that a) he is falling in love iwth her for real, and b) she is a married woman who really loves her husband. But of course, she ISN’T. And then gigolo tries to help the couple get back together, even though it is breaking his heart, and so on and so forth.

      • I knew you will make it more interesting. The problem with this movie is that they wanted to show that the father didn’t have the reason to worry because his daughters are good girls and do nothing bad, but you can’t make a movie about the girls who do nothing wrong. It will be dull. And it is very dull. The perfect script would show the girls falling in love and the father just accepting it, because the world doesn’t end whan a daughter elopes.

  3. Watching: I started 99 Songs last night but stopped short of an hour in. I’ll finish it but in chunks. I can deal with the magical true love but I’m super annoyed that the girl is mute. C’mon! So convenient, they don’t even have to pretend to give her lines and a properly developed character. (It might have been a mistake to go straight into this after finishing Crash Landing On You, which has KHNH levels of drama and emotional intensity.)

Reading: finally at long last finished the 700+ page novel that’s been making me feel guilty for months. I was annoyed with it starting about 1/3 of the way in, and it didn’t end better. But now at least I have finished it and can move on with my life!

Listening: in a song rut. One thing about K-drama is I am not into the music, too generic pop for me. Hoping 99 Songs will give me a new soundtrack, so far I was meh on two songs, liked one song. The Tiny Desk channel is saving me, such a range and everyone seems to be having a good time.

Thinking: most actors are not interesting in real life. (Is that obnoxious to say?) Of my rotating cast of crushes in the past 6 months, I’ve only found one who has interesting things to say in interviews, maybe because of his background. I can totally still appreciate the artistry of someone onscreen who seems boring in real life, but I don’t feel as attached to wanting to see everything they do and hoping their career goes well. (SRK obviously one of the interesting ones.)

    • But it’s DEEP! See, like, her Art is her Voice! Or else, his songs are her voice? Anyway, something is her voice besides, you know, her actual voice.

I know what you mean about actors. Being on this little mini-Hollywood binge, one thing I am really enjoying is NOT knowing a lot about the actors. Chris Hemsworth? No idea of his personal life! So I can just enjoy their performance without having their reality mixed in with it.

      • Watched the jazz club section last night, the music got good again. Who is that actress? I like that I don’t know these actors, except Tenzing from Axone. Also Shillong as a setting is new and beautiful. As of last night my theory is it’s like The Wall but as a love story. Not really a movie, more like an illustrated song cycle. I’ll finish tonight.

      • If you don’t want to know much about actors you can watch some kannada, marathi or punjabi movies. Some of them are so good and worth watching.

          • Kannada:
Mr & Mrs Ramachari – fun love story
Nathicharami and Gantumoote if you want something serious and women centered
            Marathi:
Double Seat – I love this movie
Katyar Kaljat Ghusli – beautiful soundtrack
            Punjabi:
Ardab Mutiyaran – a comedy with strong and fun heroine
            Sufna – a love story

    • I’m glad I’m not the only one with “rotating crushes.” And I don’t care if they’re interesting or not, I just gape at them thru a few movies and move on to the next one. Oddly enuf, I’m loyal to the females. When I find an actress I like, I stick with her. My list isn’t that long but it does grow.

  4. Headsup – Kims Convenience (is that the right spelling?) Season five is out. That is what I will be watching over the next couple of days. Watched a Netflix Japan animated series – The Great Swindler.

Thinking – will Dhanush’s new movie releasing directly on netflix be a good watch.

  5. I finished Use For My Talent. I put off watching the last episode because I figured it was going to be a boring wedding. But actually it was pretty good, only the last five minutes were boring. For a while I tried to see other things with the actor, but none of what was available to me in the U.S. is as good as Use For My Talent, largely because his costars weren’t as good.

I didn’t even know there was a Bennifer reunion. The rock I live under is quite cozy.

    • There IS a Bennifer reunion! He has broken up with his random international model lady, and she broke up with a Yankee baseball player, and now they are being Seen Around Town and stuff.

      • Haha “a Yankee baseball player”, aka Alex Rodriguez, more like *the* Yankee baseball player. That would be like calling SRK an Indian actor. They were a big power couple, very NY gone world famous (he’s from Washington Heights from a Dominican family, she’s from the Bronx from a Puerto Rican family). Before that she was married to Marc Anthony, arguably the biggest Spanish language pop star of his generation, also world famous. It’s kinda weird to me she’d go back to Ben, that seemed a blip of a Hollywood phase, but whatever makes her happy.

  6. Favorite Sonakshi movie is easily Akira! I love that movie! She is so good in it.

Watching: I finally finished watching Sardar Ka Grandson this week and Angie was right, Arjun’s character was really really dissapointing. I could have maybe enjoyed it because I love Aditi Rao Hydari and Neena Gupta, but Arjun’s character annoyed me so much that it spoiled the movie for me.

Reading: All about Bennifer (which my husband alerted me to last Friday during trivia night) and I am so curious about what is happening there?! They are taking vacations together, having cute date nights, and having PDA-filled gym sessions. They are too old for a publicity stunt.

Listening: All the songs from Dus because they are just so fun!

      • Meh. That’s what I thought of Neena Gupta’s character. I didn’t dislike her but I wasn’t in love with her either. I think normally, her inability to apologize or admit to her mistakes, or even the emotional blackmail would have bothered me more, but I was too consumed by my annoyance of Arjun’s character that her personality didn’t annoy me as much. Another contributing factor might have been that she was OLD and sick and old people get a little bit of a pass. Arjun, on the other hand had NO reason to be the jerk that he was. I could NOT stand his character. The scene towards the end when he starts to apologize and Rakul apologizes as the same time and the conclusion is that they were both wrong, drove me crazy! Rakul had nothing to apologize for!!! What were your thoughts?

Oh! I really really loved Aditi Rao Hydari as young Neena though!

        • I didn’t dislike it at first but now I think this movie was a mess. I love Arjun so I focused all my anger on grandma’s character. She was terrible, the make-up was terrible and I didn’t even like the acting. And what was this: oh she is dying, but the next day she was ok? And why they called her Sardar? I found it odd, but as I know nothing about punjabi culture I wasn’t sure. But then I read an article about the movie, written by Punjabi who said no way a punjabi family would call a grandma Sardar.
And don’t get me started about the idea of moving the house. So the guy saw a video of rural USA, where the streets are wide and there are no houses close, and thought of replicating it in LAHORE! C’mon!

    • Thank you! More Bennifer fascination!!!!! The whole last minute wedding cancel was Such a Thing, anything that returns to that scandal makes me happy.

Yes to Dus songs! I need to figure out how to use my ipod so I can find and play the soundtrack.
