Saturday WatchAlong: Dedh Ishqiya! 7:30am Chicago Time!

Happy Saturday! I am very excited about this movie and very nervous that I might have to leave before the end. I have an appointment at 10:30 and, depending on traffic, I may not have enough time. Oh well, y’all can finish without me if you have to, and I can watch the last 20 minutes on my own. Or, traffic will be good and I can stay straight through.

Dedh Ishqiya! Madhuri! Naseeruddin Shah! Clever plot! Lesbianism implied!!!! All good things. And it’s on Netflix!

At 7:30am I will put up an “and PLAY” comment here and we will keep commenting along!

  1. This is such an amazing role for Madhuri. She is playing her age, but playing her age as a fragile scared unprotected person. Does that make sense? She isn’t playing young, but she isn’t playing powerful either.

  2. Is anyone else thinking of Penelope in the Odyssey with the “poetry contest”? I think it doesn’t even need to be explained that Madhuri lied about her “dying husband’s wishes” in order to create a contest it would be impossible to win so she could stay single.

  3. Oh! Another movie I wanna watch! Eklavya! Remember that one? It’s set up like this with tradition and crumbling palaces and unbreakable class limits. And then, POOF! Happy ending, everyone decides they just don’t care any more.

  4. Question: watching this movie, do you feel more hot or more dusty? I think I feel more dusty. Like, really REALLY want a shower and a glass of water.

  5. You know the whole “punching up” theory of comedy? I feel like htis movie is using that with conning people. Yes, Madhuri and Huma are absolutely using Arshad and NAseerji. But the social structures and powers are so unfair, that it is okay. If you see what I mean.

  6. Huma totally packed up several changes of clothes ready for Madhuri, right? Because she looooooooooves her, and Madhuri needs to change clothes five times a day.

  7. Okay, when I got up this morning google maps said it would only take 20 minutes to get to my 10:30 appt. Now it is saying 33 minutes. If it holds steady, I can just barely finish the movie. Fingers crossed!

  8. Well, that was LOVELY!!!! And such a great Pride pick. And a simply gorgeous late Madhuri role. And now I have to skip the end credits song and run for the car so I can make my 10:30 massage appointment with the special bodywork person who is going to FINALLY fix my back.

  9. Would the censors have allowed an love scene between the women? I’m curious if not having it was to leave interpretations open, or to not get into trouble.
