Friday WatchAlong: Jab Tak Hai Jaan! 3pm Chicago Time! Snow and Churches and Everything CHRISTMAS!!!!

Woo-hoo! Friday WatchAlong!!! Grandpa’s family funeral weekend, and yet I am maintaining normalcy! Also, I’m pumped to watch this movie with y’all.

Gonna let Grandpa introduce it with his review (he asked for Indian movies to watch so he could understand my interests):

Jab Tak Hai Jaan   Obviously a Bollywood production. Well done and a good love story mixed with some moderate action. The hero by working hard goes from part time jobs to owning and operating a successful restaurant. His love interest who is engaged to another takes a church vow of separation if his life will be saved after an accident. He goes off to Afghanistan and a dangerous position in the army. There another girl is involved. It is a good story and the scenes as filmed were interesting and sometimes spectacular. The two ladies were good actors and surprising to me very good dancers. As is usual in these films all of a sudden there are a whole bunch of people doing a elaborate dance routine. It was two minutes short of three hours and I view it all in one sitting.

Let’s see if we can be as good as Grandpa and view it all in one sitting! At 3pm Chicago time, I will put up an “and PLAY” comment on this post and we will all comment along together from there. Yaaaaaay!

  1. So, we all know this is based on the classic novel “The End of the Affair”, right? which uses the same central plot point but makes it actually make SENSE. First, the heroine is truly married, in a church wedding, so breaking her marriage vows is an affront to God according to normal church logic, not just nutty personal logic. And second, it takes place during the London blitz, so death is all around them all the time and her sense that he might die to punish her for sin is less “because God cares about me so much” and more “because we all might die tomorrow and I should do whatever I can to make it less likely”.

So i this movie had just had the guts to make Kat for real married in a Hindu religious ceremony, making this a for real sin against God, wouldn’t it all be SOOOOOOOOO much more logical?

      • And everything else still works! She believes their love is a sin, but it really truly is a sin, and so cuts it off. He believes that marriage iwthout love isn’t valid and therefore it ISN’T a sin and just waits for her to agree. That’s a logical relationship conflict!

    • And they go there with Neetu but not with Kat and SRK. Which is again my complaint about Yash Chopra. He takes a bold concept but in an attempt to Indianize it, he somehow messes it up. I feel this way about so many of his movies: Kabhi Kabhi, Silsila, Doosa Aadmi ( I dont care that he didn’t direct it, he produced it and it is very Yash Chopra).

  2. Also he just… randomly joins the Indian Army?? Couldn’t they have made him like a war journalist instead of an elite bomb diffuser or whatever

    • That part actually works. Way back in his intro in London, he explains that his whole family is in the army, but his Mom sent him away to London to be safer. So he is giving up on London and following the family tradition.

  3. You know what would have been AWESOME??? Kat and SRK fall in love while she is preparing a song for her husband for their first anniversary. AND SHE’S PREGNANT. Now that’s something that would upset Jesus! And then in the present day, she can realize it is better to have a happy divorce than a sad marriage for her kids and stuff and stuff.

  4. HE’S IN LOVE! This is a whole movie about how true love isn’t the girl who is beautiful and sexy, but the one who gets under your skin and you really care about. Or at least, it should be.

  5. Am I the only one who thinks that Anushka is too unsafe to be around bombs xD I would be okay with their romance literally anywhere else! Just not around bombs, as THEY ALREADY ESTABLISHED earlier!

  6. I know these are so not in style anymore but cargo pants (or cargo shorts or cargo skirt) and a black or white tanktop is still one of my favorite outfits to wear!!!

  7. I like to think their real lif edynamic is kind of like this. Not that Anushka is in love with him or something, but that she is all perky and energetic and youthful and he is old and quieter and seriouser and amused.
