Friday WatchAlong: Tamasha Hate Watch! If You Are Liking It, You Are WRONG!! 3pm Chicago Time Start

Happy Friday! I am going to try to convince all of you to hate this movie along with me. Because it is the WORST.

Tamasha! It’s on Netflix, it’s easy to find and easy to watch, and I HATE it. And I am worried, because I think everyone else watching may be neutral? Oh well, hate is contagious, I will convince you.

  1. Here! For some reason the reply box is only showing the top half of text, so typing may get a bit random. Just had a bath, feeling mellow and a bit apprehensive about how annoying this may get!

  2. I hate the new UTV logo! Already I have strong feelings on this movie. the old one was subtle and classic, the dancers are dumb.

    • Just gotta let you know Kirre, that the reason I couldn’t make this watch-a-long, is because I was organizing children’s theatre. (Theatre is way snootier than Theater in America).

      • Are you talking about spelling between theatre vs theater? I just write the UK way, because I’m used to it. Also theatre is more about the medium for me and theater is the venue in my mind.

    • Didn’t even realize that was Dips! Yeah, she is throwing herself into it and literally not recognizable, Ranbir is all “watch me watch me”

  3. I think if I weren’t doing a watchalong, I would turn it off at this point. As in, the childhood flashback has now gone on slightly too long for my interest. Give me something more to care about than sweaters.

    • You-all were subjected to experimental theater in college; for me it was experimental music ( ; But “O Superman” is actually fairly easy to appreciate compared to a lot of things, IMO.

  4. You know what it is? It’s that it’s a movie which is only enjoyable if you are consciously thinking “I’m watching a Film. I am Analyzing. I am Theorizing”. It’s nto a movie that you can just let sweep you away and straight up enjoy.

  5. Huh, all the stories are love stories. I get the point that all stories are the same (oooo, it’s almost like patriarchal societies in which women’s reproductive abilities were tightly controlled are all the same!), but it’s not acknowledging tyhe choice to only look at love stories.

    • It’s going to be a statement on predictable love stories, and then it’s going to say “actual, love stories are predictable, ooooooooo, I’m so smart”

    • Foreign lands are always exotic and carnival. If this movie was slightly better, it would be cynical about that, but instead it feels like it weirdly falls into the stereotype? UGH

  6. This scene is going on WAY too long!!! I’m comparing it with JHMS where their intro went through so much backstory details and changed scenes and had all this other stuff happening beyond just a boring convo.

  7. Imtiaz is so hard trying to be French New Wave here, but all I want is to punch Ranbir out of the movie and for Deepika to experience the magic of Southern Europe while being single and happy

  8. Question: Why is Dips charming and Ranbir irritating?

My theory is that Deepika is giving to the camera. She’s trying to charm us, smiling, being open, and so on. And Ranbir isn’t trying, he is just expecting love. He is saying “look at me” while she is saying “Love me”. Is that it? Or am I not syaing it right?

  9. So here’s where Margaret gets confused and writes a big long thing! Ranbir’s character is so immediately irritating in this, but presented as though he is charming, it makes me think that Imtiaz the writer/director just has no idea what an actual good male character looks like. But then I look at JHMS, LAK, LAK2, JWM, literally EVERY OTHER MOVIE, and he has awesome male characters. Flawed, but empathetic, and the film is aware of their flaws and critiques them.

Anyway, long story short, I think Ranbir is toxic to directors and makes them believe in toxic character roles they should be ignoring.

  10. Oh yeah, it’s always charming when a couple does a dare that involves unknowing strangers. I just love that. Especially if the strangers are of a different race/ethnicity.

  11. They had a sunset shot of her adoringly watching ranbir in ‘thinker’ mode. Now I feel sick. Hes just aggravating, but everyone is spellbound and laughing along at his crap. Cant manage this much suspension of belief. More songs!

    • THANK YOU!!!!! And he seems to have pulled hte same trick on all his directors that he pulls on his girlfriends. HE’S NOT THAT GREAT!!! The film doesn’t work if the plot is “Ranbir is super awesome and all others are dirt beneath his feet”

  12. Once again, Ranbir feels like he is “acting” and “being funny” and “performing”. Instead of just BEING and being entertaining. I have seen some great one person performances, but they are not like this, and it should nto just be “laugh line laugh line laugh line”.
