Friday WatchAlong: Tamasha Hate Watch! If You Are Liking It, You Are WRONG!! 3pm Chicago Time Start

Happy Friday! I am going to try to convince all of you to hate this movie along with me. Because it is the WORST.

Tamasha! It’s on Netflix, it’s easy to find and easy to watch, and I HATE it. And I am worried, because I think everyone else watching may be neutral? Oh well, hate is contagious, I will convince you.

  1. It’s not even that I think Dips is that good of an actress. I mean, she is good. But she throws herself into her character and is open to the camera and all of these things, while Ranbir just feels so isolated and self-centered in his performances.

  2. Okay, I think in something somewhere we talked about how this is the breaking point of the film. IT feels like we should be jumping to Dips’ story at this point to give the two leads some sense of equal weight. But instead we get one song, and then go right back to Ranbir. It’s weird.

  3. You know what would be a fascinating movie? One where a woman obsesses over a vacation romance and eventually it makes her realize that she is unhappy with her life, it’s not about the boy, it’s about her.

Tragically, this is not that movie.

    • YES! And this very similar scene is in loads of other Imtiaz movies, and he makes it feel much more balanced. Like, the hero is emotional too and all that.

  4. That should have felt like the heroine taking control, she found him and stalked him and asked him out and everything. But instead, somehow Ranbir ended up being the character in power? how did he DO that???

  5. I’m hungry, but I think it is just boredom? I will start a game to entertain myself! Let’s go through the alphabet alternating good things abotu Ranbir’s character and bad about Dips. I’ll start!

  6. Even if for no better reason than to preserve one’s own ego, I think it’s pretty much idiotic to propose with other people present unless you’ve already arranged for a “yes.”

  8. Now, in Rab Ne, the point was that the “real” person was interesting and sweet and dedicated and all of those things. The fake person was just surface and fake. That seems way more interesting and, not for nothing, WAY harder to perform. In this Ranbir is just ON TIMES ONE HUNDRED and then OFF TIMES ONE HUNDRED and that’s it.

  9. I think the breakdown scene is coming up. This is the one that Ranbir needed three days to Emotionally Recover after filming. I read that in an article about how “deep” he is, but all I got was “he delayed shooting THREE DAYS???” And also, I feel like Dips dug deep and gave a lot but of course it’s not about her, it’s allllllllllll about Ranbir the Great Actor.

  10. In JHMS (which Elin doesn’t like), Shahrukh conveys the same thing by a silent dialogue-less 5 second shot looking in a mirror. Because it’s called Acting.

  11. Well, it’s nice that she is agreeing their break-up is All About Him. She spent 4 years of her life on something she is now seeing was a dream, but that’s boring to explore, let’s think about the Fragile Male instead.

  12. No joke, this is why I think Ranbir is a dangerous star persona. This woman broke up with him. And the film has full sympathy for his agony, it even shows the woman having full sympathy for him. To the point that unacceptable dangerous behavior is made acceptable. And all the Ranbir films are like that! If you don’t get what you want, it is okay to misbehave, throw a tantrum,a nd expect everyone else to take care of you. I don’t think male upper class/caste Hindu Indian men need any more encouragement to feel that way.

  13. In 2 States, our hero works hard and gets a marketing degree so he can support himself while persuing his artistic dreams in his spare time. Oh wait, I DID THAT TOO. Sheesh!!!! It’s not one or the other!!!! Just be, you know, Not Lazy.
