DCIB Film List for 2021!!! THE FINAL CHOICES (ish)

Thank you thank you for helping me work out this list! I’m gonna go ahead and limit our 2021 Awards Discussion to this tiny group of nominees. Just to make things manageable and try to leave out as few people as possible!

Haseen Dillruba

Vikrant Massay being sweet and bearded, Taapsee being sexy, and the whole movie being WEIRD and twisted and sexy and dark.

Mimi

Surrogate movie! That made us all argue about surrogacy and stuff!

La La Land and Reel Life: Mimi by AR Rahman : Music Review(ish)

Pushpa

Allu Arjun’s big crossover hit!

Minnal Murali

99 Songs

Finally, the Rahman movie releases! And it is ridiculously bad and over the top and MUSIC WILL CHANGE THE WORLD.

Karnan

I haven’t seen it myself, but soooooo much buzz! Tamil, Dhanush, dark and strange and good apparently.

Karnan (2021) - IMDb

Ray

Again, haven’t seen it myself, but have heard it is soooooooooooo bad it makes you hate everyone in it.

Ray (TV Series 2021– ) - IMDb

Meenakshi Sundareshkar

Haven’t seen this one either. Sanya again, a less interesting movie, long distance marriage romance thing.

Meenakshi Sundareshwar Review: A Strange Film, Starring Sanya Malhotra And Abhimanyu Dassani - 2.5 Stars (Out Of 5)

Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui

I will be watching this one soon! It’s an Ayushmann issue movie, fun.

Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui (2021) - IMDb

Shershaah

Sid M! And Kiara Advani! And yes, jingoism, but Sid M! Oh, and I haven’t seen this one either. This is the “Margaret hasn’t seen it” section.

Shershaah Twitter Review/ Reaction: Sidharth Malhotra-Kiara Advani Win Hearts, Netizens Get Emotional Watching Captain Vikram Batra's Biopic

I’m not saying you have to have seen ALL of these movies, this isn’t the Oscars (I haven’t seen all these movies, anyway). But I’m saying for all our Awards posts, you have to choose between these movies. No fair bringing in some weird non-Hindi thing ANGIE. Or some obscure non 2021 thing POPKA. Or Korean TV BASICALLY EVERYONE HERE BUT ME AND ANGIE.

  1. Hey, I don’t watch Korean TV either, I’m too busy watching 6 million Christopher Lee movies.

Great, now I gotta quickly watch the Vikrant Massey movie and Ayushmann gym bro movie, but Christopher Lee is calling me.

  2. Don’t worry, I have seen only few 2021 weird movies, and almost all of them are so forgetable I hardly remember them.

I don’t see 83 and Sooryavanshi on the list.

    • Because it’s the DCIB list, and for some reason, almost none of us have seen those two. Although ’83 would be a STRONG contender for “best wigs”.

  3. Seen them all except 99 Songs and Atrangi Re WHICH ISN’T STREAMING! What is Time to Dance doing here? I know I’ve been absent for a few, but isn’t this a list of bests?

I found all the films I know uneven, some good, some bad aspects, but I can go all Academy Award Night and pick players.

Best Actor: Allu, surprisingly perfect in Pushpa. Second Best: Tovino, another surprise
    Best Actress: Kriti
Best Suppprting Actor, Harsh (who knew?)

They are all surprises, actually. Allu and Tovino usually do rom-com stuff and Kriti has finally been given the chance to show what she’s capable of. As for Harsh, he has the potential to be better than all of them if he can only get out of his own way.

    • I swear you can watch Atrangi Re! Go to Hulu and search for it. It won’t pop up on the mainscreen or anything, but if you search for that exact title, you can find it.

Don’t worry, this isn’t a list of “bests”. This is just the films to choose from when voting for all kinds of categories I have to invent. It’s been such a strange year, I wanted to start by just limiting it down to the films DCIB has chosen to watch.

        • Found Atrangi Re on Hulu exctly like you said and watched it last night. Nice, not a spellbinder. I love Dhanush and always thought Sara would work hard, develop her talent and build a top-notch career unlike Jhanvi who capitalized on her name and went clubbing. (Opinion)

Unfortunately, Sara annoyed me in this film, as she did in another, can’t think of the name right now, where she again played a “will she/won’t she” energetic gadfly. And Akshay just looked weird.

          • Okay. I just scrolled back to when I was away from DCIB for a while and read your review of Atrangi Re. Dammit! Now I have to watch it again.

  4. WAIT. Is Ajeeb Daastaans not eligible because it’s an anthology? But it can’t be because Ray is on the list! (But it can because you can do whatever you want). But I want to nominate the Konkona one for something; that was really one of the best things I saw all last year.

I did see Sherni last weekend and really really liked it but I think I liked Haseen Dillruba and Pagglait better. Still mulling it over a bit.

Meenakshi Sundereshwar and Sooryavanshi are tied for most forgettable, and Ray was the worst–didn’t even finish it after I watched the parts with Kay Kay Menon and Manoj. Also, I deeply resent this series for making me look forward to it.

I should see Atrangi Re, shouldn’t I? Should I? I should, I know. But, like, Akshay and Sara are sort of a couple, right? Is that not kind of creepy?

Thanks for reminding me that Love Story exists and I want to watch it!
