We were blessed in earnest Art Will Save the World artistry this year. But which of these films causes more silly giggles and general joy? The one with the flipbook of flashback, or the one with music-caused insanity?
Time To Dance!
Our young hero and heroine confront prejudice in Britain, that well known prejudice that “Indians can’t dance ballroom!”. But, after a viral video campaign, the all powerful Bradford Dance Council DOES admit that Indians can’t dance ballroom, and our hero’s “Post Traumatic Stress Disorder” is fixed by Love.

Now I know you are thinking “that was hilarious, surely no other movie could be that funny-bad”. But no! This year also gave us 99 Songs!
99 Songs
Our hero is in love with our heroine who is mute. They communicate through text messages and longing gazes, no one seems to understand that sign language is a thing. But her all powerful and wealthy father challenges the hero that Art is Dumb and he can’t marry her until he writes 99 Songs that could change the world. Our hero goes off on a journey to find music, accidentally takes drugs, goes insane, and our heroine starts wearing black eyeliner. But then he DOES change the world with his music, so it all turns out okay.

You can make your decision based on these songs alone, but ideally you would actually watch both movies! Preferably in a snarky watchalong late at night with popcorn.
Which is the winner?
It’s really close for me, but the Bradford Dance Council which seems to be a governmental body controlling All Ballroom Dance in Britain wins it for me. Just slightly better than The Music Drove Him MAD!!!!

Stupid Italian Netflix deprived me of the joy of watching those two precious movies, so I can only judge the songs and the posters. 99 songs looks like sad joy. Time to dance looks like a happy joy so I vote it.

They are both SO BAD!!! So very very bad. You should try to find them on einthusan if you can, a guaranteed laugh.
Time to Dance has a Tragic Fatal Dance Accident, but 99 Songs has Music Caused Insanity. So they are both a bit dark.

Time to dance was a HOOT. 99 Songs still has that prestige A R Rahman music and pretty visuals edge, but in entertainment value Time to Dance is just a party.

If there was an award for pretensious song video O Aashiqa is the clear winner. He brought the world together, by making everyone STARE AT THEIR PHONE. (Okay I didn’t even finish the video, 2 minutes of phone staring images was enough for me).

Oh, you missed the point of the song! See, it was so meaningful, it caused a car accident in the car the corrupt politician was driving, and then he heard the song as he realized he was miraculously still alive, which inspired him to go on TV and confess his corruption, making everyone else want to confess THEIR corruption, and soon the whole world was corruption free thanks to this ONE SONG.
So yes, it is very very pretentious.

Still not over the fact that 99 Songs just directly made its heroine mute, didn’t even pretend to give her likes or a character. And you skipped over the world-changing revelation that converted our villain while listening to the *one perfect song* in the midst of a slow motion car crash.
That said, the drama pose dancing in those videos is something else. If the standard is uncomplicated pretentious ridiculousness, guessing that Time to Dance would still win.
What do we think about the actors in these films? Are we sympathetic to the young strivers or do we think they brought the bad on themselves?

Well, Time to Dance is all nepotism courtesy of Salman. It’s Kat’s sister and Aditya Pancholi’s son who Salman is sponsoring. So those actors worked hard in their roles, but also at some point must have known they were being indulged.
On the other hand, 99 Songs had actual talent all over the place! So I think those actors thought they were signing up for an actual good movie and didn’t realize what was happening until they saw it all come together. Forget the leads, there’s Lisa Ray and Prakash Raj! Actually super important talented people! Who signed on because they thought the movie was gonna say something interesting. And then, oh dear.

I think so!!!! Because it is why you end up with a dance film which features two people who can’t dance.
