Monday Morning Questions: What Do You Want to Ask Me on a Rumpled Monday?

Happy Monday! Everything is weird. The cleaning people are here, but it’s only one person instead of two like I’ve had before, which means it will take twice as long and also I feel weird not interacting, versus when it was two chipper people talking to each other. My co-worker was supposed to come over for training and canceled at the last minute. And there are supposed to be thunderstorms this afternoon, but right now there isn’t a cloud in the sky. It’s all strange and I don’t like it.

Here is where you get to ask me anything you want from “did you know it’s Rajkummar’s birthday?” to “Why are there thunderstorms somedays when the morning is so sunny and nice?” Just keep swinging back here all week as you think of new questions!

Now, question for you! It’s Rajkummar’s birthday, which is your favorite movie from him?

Ooooo, this is HARD! But I think I will go with Stree. He does such a wonderful job, and it is such an original film.

  1. I think my fav Rajkummar movie is Newton. It’s a perfect role for him, it’s about serious stuff but made in a light way and there is Anjali Patil and Pankaj Tripathi.

  2. While I love many Rajkumar films, he’s done many good performances like in Bareilly Ki Barfi. I think my favorite movie from him is Kai Po Che, there is just so much talent in this film and the movie itself is so good though heartbreaking.

Are you excited for Karan’s new movie Rocky aur Rani ki Prem Kahaani? Do you have any ideas on what the story will be about? Karan said it would be a new age K3G and its about a rich person falling in love with a middle class one.

    • I just don’t have the energy to be excited about movies any more! the Pandemic has worn me down, all those “it’s coming out!” and then “it’s not coming out!”

    • Oh yeah, Kai Po Che. I was going to say Bareilly Ki Barfi too. My favorites are the roles where his sweetness and vulnerability are given space but balanced out by something darker.

  3. I think I also have to go Newton, it was great. My favourite performance of his, though, was in 5 Weddings, and this is entirely due to how hot he was in that movie.

He needs to dance more, anyway.

      • Gah, that’s good. People think I’m insane for thinking he’s the best male dancer now alongside Tiger, but that’s because they don’t have eyes. Actually, in expression and timing a better dancer than Tiger, although obviously Tiger beats him in range of moves and power. In terms of expression, actually probably the best one since Govinda and SRK and I will die on that hill.

        • I have the opposite reaction to his dancing! I watched a couple of his videos to be sure but he comes across awkward when he tries to pull off the cool and suave expressions, although the movements are fine! I got the same feeling when I watched Vikrant Massey in that Ginny Sunny movie. I feel some people are meant to be good (even great) actors without having that film star quality and that’s ok.

          • Yeah, cool and suave, maybe not so much, but he’s not trying to do that here I don’t think. Anyway, I don’t want cool or suave, I want emotions emotions emotions in dancing.

  4. I have two questions:

What’s that one song you post sometimes that’s not from a movie and has southern ladies dancing by the beach with a solo female singer? I always feel like listening when summer comes and can never remember the name.

Are there any movies you liked and want to recommend but can’t because they messed up the ending? Have been thinking about how important endings are, and how a bad ending can ruin an otherwise great film or show.

    • Kerala Boat Song! Thanks for reminding me, on this watch/listen I really got the vibe of a voyaging people. It’s not about the modern diaspora, it’s about a land where the boats have always taken off and gone far far away.

The first thing that comes to mind for something where the ending ruined it is “How I Met Your Mother”. I am so mad at that show! It was a comfort watch for me, and now I can’t watch it at all because I knew how stupid the ending/final season is. And since the whole show is serialized and about Life Changes and stuff, I can’t even go back and watch a standalone episode. for movies, the first one that comes to mind is Kedarnath. Gorgeous movie, great songs, great performances, lovely love story, and then the ending is INFURIATING.

      • I second everything Margaret said. I can never watch an episode of HIMYM because the ending was SOOOO infuriating. It completely ruined the show for me. Same thing with Kedarnath. The ending is SOOOO stupid. I will add Ae Dil Hai Mushkil to that list also. The ending of that movie drives me NUTS. I think you were part of the conversation when we proposed an alternate ending.

      • I didn’t even like the movie as I thought the whole love story itself was impossible but that dumb ending ruined it for me. Like why did he have to die and her dumb father live? It’s so stupid.

      • That’s the song, thank you!

True, ADHM is a great example. So many good things until UGH. Also Zero, as discussed extensively – the ending isn’t the only thing that makes that a hard one to recommend, but it could have helped bring it back around and instead it took a sharp turn into WTF. I know you don’t share this one, but I was mad about Gang Leader going into full make hero mode after being such a fresh ensemble to begin with. I would rec that one more if it weren’t for the ending.

For shows, Giri/Haji starts as a cool international crime drama and by the last episode or two has wandered into interpretive dance. There have been a couple of Korean shows that killed me with the ending. Her Private Life is a super fun romcom about a woman who works in a fancy art gallery by day and has a secret fangirl identity after hours (relatable!), but then the last couple of episodes threw in like three too many twists and it lost its grip on the characters. 25 21 was so so good right up until it face planted in the final episode. Still recommend that one but with caveats.

I have a theory that basing your movie or show on a book helps with plot structure and satisfying endings. Then again, if you run out of book you get Game of Thrones.

  5. Last week Nayanthara married director Vignesh Shivan. I think she looked lovely.

SRK was also invited which confirms they will star together in Jawan:

  6. One of my favorite Rajkumar performances is in Talaash. He had such a small role and yet he had a way of making it his own. I think he is just great at taking any role, big or small, and really shining in it.

Now, question for you, are you planning on watching Jayeshbhai Jordaar? It’s on Amazon Prime. Is that a good watchalong movie? I am definitely going to watch it but wanted to figure out the timing of it.

    Like

    • I was tempted to pick Talaash! It’s like Nawazuddin in Aaje Nachle, a tiny role but he does so much with it that you remember him.

Someone, clearly not you since you haven’t seen it, said that Jayeshbhai Jordaar is so sad and dark in the first few minutes that they couldn’t get through it. So I think NOT a watchalong movie!

      • It was me!
In the first 5 minutes we have:
-an ultrasound to check baby’s sex, and all the family praying it won’t be a girl (we also learn the woman has been forced 6 times to abort already and is very weak)
-the same family praying to a goat to not have a girl in family (not in a funny way but in a “having a girl is the worst thing that can happen” way)
-young happy girl scolded for listening to english music (“You won’t find a husband if you are too educated/know english!”)
        -child marriage
-a loving husband forced to beat his wife to teach her brother a lesson

I had enough and stopped watching.
