Sunday WatchAlong: Kandukondain Kandukondain! 8am Chicago time!

It’s Sunday, I’ve ordered coffee, I’ve walked the dog, I am ready to watch a nice South Indian version of Jane Austen.

Kandukondain Kandukondain! Lovely lovely movie, and I challenge you to pick between Ajit and Mammootty as Best Man Ever by the end of it. Best Woman Ever is easy, that is always Tabu.

At 8am Chicago time, I will put up an “And PLAY” comment and we will all comment along together from there!

  1. Very pumped to share this with you! And I hope you have a familiarity with Sense and Sensibility too because it will make you appreciate it even more.

    • Not participating just reading, since I love this movie so much and can visualise each and every scene. Its Sri Lanka, India sent peacekeeping troops to Sri Lanka during the late 80s, triggering the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi. It connects to his whole speech about why his sacrifice is not appreciated especially in the context of Tamil Nadu which has a lot of connection to LTT +despised this move of sending the peacekeeping troops to Sri Lanka and the pointlessness of his loss. It’s really brilliant of Rajiv Menon to add this more complex issue to this movie. It makes Manmooty’s character more deep and makes us root for him more

      • Thank you! I was thinking watching him that he reminds me of Vietnam Vets in America, and it is very similar. Fighting in a war that had no support and coming home even more damaged.

        • Yeah, I think it would be even worse as a Tamilian as you’re fighting against your own kind. It is a very unique take on the typical image of an army man.

  2. Wow, I am having SUCH a strong flashback. Not only is this the second Indian movie I watched ever, it is one of the first soundtracks I bought. I’m thrown all the way back 20 years with these opening credits.

  3. What I really love is that Aish gets this big perky song, and Tabu DOESN’T. Because they aren’t interchangeable heroines, they are very different people and for once the film doesn’t just lump all women together.

  5. Okay, two things. First, notice how the first groom was all about Aish as soon as he saw her? And now Aish has a whole song and TAbu is just standing there and Ajith is all about Tabu and blind to Aish. Love them together.

Second, notice that in conversations Tabu was all “arranged marriage” and Aish was all “love marriage”? Only now sensible sane Tabu is falling for a stranger, and Aish is eventually going to pick the man who makes the most practical sense for her and who her mother would choose.

  6. Mammootty is actually a really great PTSD character, isn’t he? WE don’t usually get the full survivor guilt, out of step with the world, just plain unpleasant experience.

    • In a way her immaturity and dreamworld is perfect for Mammootty. Everyone else is tiptoeing around him and trying to respect his pain, and Aish just barrels in.

  7. Okay, notice that Tabu is only in songs in the vision of Ajith??? She doesn’t dance or sing in real life, she’s all practical. And she never even dreams of it. But Ajith can see that in her, the magic under the practical.

  8. Obviously, Tabu is beautiful, but they are totally underplaying her beauty in this movie and I love it. Aish is splashy and goregous and impossible to ignore, Tabu is queitly beautiful, but she has a dude who loves her no matter what.

  9. Okay, important question, Alan Rickman or Mammootty? Who is the better Colonel Brandon??? I think Mammootty is the better written character, but Alan Rickman still is the one for me.

  10. By the way, Chiyaan Vikram dubbed for Abbas here! Again, one of the tragedies where Vikram and Aish ‘technically’ worked together, but only until Raavanan / Raavan came did they actually act together. They are such a great Jodi and no, I will never shut up about them! Go watch Raavanan!

  11. I loved this film from the first watch and it’s still one of my most beloved movies, but I must admit I forgot many details. Now, while we are watching I realize it has everything I love and search in films: Teddy bear hero, long gazes, the heroine being classical singer. And the question is: I always loved all this or felt in love with those things thanks to this movie?

  12. Half of my brain is making an edit where I see young Vikram’s face instead of Abbas’ because his voice is so distinctive I am just imagining him in this movie. I deserve my Aish and Vikram 90s rom-com film somehow because damn they should have been together sooner! The SRK and Kajol of Tamil cinema for sure if it had happened. 100% sure!

  13. Mammootty and Aish are totally one of those couples that I just want to watch living their lives. Like, if they wanted to do a spin off of this movie where Mammootty and Aish travel the world solving crimes, I would be down for that. He gets angry and grumpy and she yells at him for it, she speaks out of turn and he smiles and smooths it over.

  14. Oh man, this Certificate thing is so real! Especially in computer programming. You’ve got all these self-taught or trained on the job folks who know more than folks with degrees, but the HR department has to check off the degree requirement before they will hire you.

  15. This is when I start to fall in love with Aish’s character! Back in the village she was kind of a brat, it wasn’t clear if she was strong just because she had never faced adversity or not. But now she has switched from thinking only of herself to wanting to contribute to the family.
