Happy Sunday! I’ve got coffee ordered and being delivered shortly, the sun is out, Albie Dog has been fed, let’s do this thing! With the usual priviso that if no one shows up within the first 15-20 minutes, I cancel.
Baazigar! O Baazigar!
This is either the first or second SRKajol movie, I can never remember which. Definitely Shilpa Shetty’s first film. And it’s crazy and 90s and cute and over the top and all good things. Also, available for rent on Prime.

At 8am Chicago time, I will put up an “And PLAY!” comment and we will go along from there!
So did Margaret MISS the throwing Shilpa over the roof scene? I would be sad to have missed that.

Yes! And all I got in return was clean hair!

That is what you get for having such a fancy door, you confuse the servants.

I’m back! Clean hair, clean clothes, but I missed SHILPA’S DEATH SCENE!!!

Still in the clothes I slept with with dirty hair BUT I got to see SRK turn EVIL!

Madon Chopra is the WORST.

Yes. It does destroy his loving father image- happier with suicide than unsanctioned marriage.

And look with just a bill for a “wedding chain” Kajol figures out the whole plot! Or subplot. The man she was getting married to must have killed her. And then Dad is happy she killed herself because it is less embarrassing than an enlopement.

Looking at the scene where he speaks of Seema bringing shame to the family, I’m SO glad Madan Chopra gets skewered like a kabab at the end of the film.

Wait, in India you can sue people for causing other people’s suicides. So can you sue the fathers who won’t let their daughters marry the men they want?
LikeLike
No Genevieve, that would be RIDICULOUS. Obviously father’s own their daughter’s lives so there’s no crime here. I dare you to find a cop who would be willing to register it. On the other hand, the boyfriend who “made” her fall in love with him, now THERE you would have a case!

Okay, I do get confused with the Indian legal system. Especially since it kept Aryan in jail for month for being found at a party without drugs.

Bribes, It’s all Bribes. There’s this burst of Indian True Crime docs hitting Netflix, and I can’t take any of them seriously.

I doubt it given the social climate here. Arranged marriages are still often the norm. Idk the specific laws but I doubt you’d get very far.

Having listened to a ton of True Crime, I can tell you the Kajol investigation bit is 100% thing that happens. I even listened to one recently that was specifically about being afraid of heights and the husband said she fell from a cliff, but her friends were sure he pushed her.

Really hard to imagine being married to someone who wants to kill you. But I keep thinking of that man who drove his whole family off a cliff in CA recently. I only know about it because they lived.

I think the key is not to trust a whirlwind romance with a stranger who files for life insurance the day after the wedding.

See, this is when SRK gets total evil. It was bad to kill Shilpa but there was a sort of balance to it. Poor Ravi, this is just killing to cover up.

THE CONTACTS SCENE!

I really really wish I could have seen this first day-first show for this reveal to land!!!! It’s such a clever idea, this subtle thing that makes us think it MUST be two different guys, and then the reveal that it is contacts.

I wasnt’ sure what I was supposed to know or not know since I missed the first 20 minutes. So I told my family what was up, and they still enjoyed the film.

SRK said he hates fiddling with his eyes and I guess this is the last time he did this whole contacts business

So 6 mth time jump. If Ravi had gotten outta there alive she wouldn’t be still running around trying to find evidence.

He is killing himself, sorta, just his character. Not quite the same. Poor Seema.
Question: Do you think he would have eventually killed Kajol or was their bond just too great?
LikeLike
My theory is that at some point the script had him turn on Kajol, but their chemistry was so awesome it was adjusted to make it so that he would never hurt her.

Their chemistry is really good! ANd he didn’t even like her the first time they met.

I mean the actors, not the characters.

I feel like he may have gone in with the idea of either killing her too or at least leaving her in disgrace, and got too emotionally involved in the process.

I think what we are supposed to get is that SRK was cultivating Shilpa for months and started to get worried she would never introduce him to her father and let him start taking over the business, so he began romancing Kajol as a back-up. But he is still in disguise, just in case Shilpa works out and he has to pretend to be a different person. But once it is clear Shilpa’s father will NEVER accept him, he has to kill her so he can put all his eggs in the Kajol basket.
there’s also the personality difference, Kajol would not just quietly elope or marry someone else, she would force her Dad to accept Shahrukh, a much better option.

I like that disgracing her father is more important than just killing him.

Wait, they’ve been dating for months and Kajol didn’t know his parents were dead? Did they never talk?

Nah, they just did fun stuff, and her sister died. Oh wait her sister died and he didn’t mention dead parents. Okay that is weird. Kajol should have picked that up, I mean she figured out that her sister was killed with a reciept she should have caught this!

Oooooo, more rich people-servant stuff!!! Evil Dad started out as another “funny servant” and then quickly rose to the top and now has his own servants. So the film isn’t classist, exactly, you can start as a humble “sit on the floor” type and then grow to be in charge of everything.

When I was growing up in India the whole thing about fraud and people killing families for their property was a thing. Another case of films reflect society perhaps?

This “power of attorney” thing, also a real thing in True Crime! Think this is how evil Epstein got his power, he found a strange old rich man and got him to sign a power of attorney.

Yep. He somehow got close to Les Wexner, aging billionaire who owns every mall store chain. Les gave him POA and he used that to get in with the in crowds and then became Pimp to Royalty.

11 year old – He wants revenge, and he killed that other person so that they wouldn’t know he was killing people and she had some evidence.
He got the movie plot DOWN. And he isn’t even watching with sound, we only have two headphone sets, the kids are just reading the subtitles.
