Sunday WatchAlong: Dil Aashna Hai! Shahrukh’s First Role! He is Such a Wittle Baby, and the Movie is CRAZY

I am so so so so SO excited to share this film with you! It’s not just Shahrukh, it’s the whole crazy melodramatic plot, and the stacked cast, and EVERYTHING.

It’s on Prime, FINALLY. Prime has it at exactly 2 hours and 29 minutes, so if you find it somewhere else, just make sure it is the same length.

It’s also 99 cents to rent, but I’m thinking you will be willing to pay 99 cents to see this film? With Shahrukh being a baby and the cast being crazy?

  2. Okay, the first words he speaks in a movie are “Hi Dad”. I feel like there’s a whole essay to be written about that.

    • Kabir Bedi! He’s a really interesting guy, very cutting age and unconventional and stuff, and also does a ton of character roles.

  3. I think they cast people to match Kabir’s height, and now SRK and the poor Mom actress look like tiny people.

  4. This singer has the voice my husband makes fun of. Squeeky high. But of course SRK’s love look is so good you forgive her assault on your ears in solidarity with him.

  5. Hema directed this, and she has a whole second career as a dance teacher and doing shows and stuff. HOW DID SHE LET THIS HAPPEN???

    • Turns out, if she’d gotten to the phone 3 minutes earlier, she could have learned who her real mother was before her “mother” dropped dead while talking!

  6. Wow – to be told your mother isn’t your mother over the phone! While your mother is on the her death bed, and you miss her death! Wow. A lot has happened in a very short period of time.

  7. I like this Lucknow house because it isn’t as bare as most of the houses I see on indian films. And I guess I like wallpaper.

  8. Lucknow, the dancing bells, the whole thing is saying she is part of an Tawaif family, raised to be a dancer and eventually make a lot of money sleeping with men. Which I don’t know if was still happening in the 90s? But I will go along with it for the sake of this movie.

      • Yep, the girls are raised into it generation after generation. And there’s a whole thing about if you are super high class and dance trained and stuff, you don’t lose your virginity until you are well into your teens and it is a whole elaborate sale system. So we can assume that our heroine was raised ina brothel but not yet OF the brothel.

    • There’s a video of Shahrukh reenacting the disgusted expression she made when she looked at him first. Have you seen it? Poor shahrukh got so much judgment for his looks in his early days.

  9. But of course Shahrukh isn’t like those other men! He doesn’t want to buy her with money, he just wants LOVE.

    • Industrialist is all we know. I’m thinking he just hired a really good dance troupe for his daughter’s wedding?

  10. What is Laila, she is a toy! And I think she is a toy dancer with VERY BIG BOOBS. At least she looks DDD in that white strapless dress. Giant breasted dancer. Ouce, no wonder she wasn’t good at it, it would be too painful to jump.

  11. I think it is convenient that the pimp is NOT a giant like all the men at the wedding. That way SRK can actually beat him up.

    • Divya Bharti. She was a rising star and was also in Deewana with SRK. She died shortly after this, falling out a 4th floor window. It’s not clear what happened exactly, suicide seems unlikely, but it’s possible she was just very drunk and slipped. Her husband at the time was Sajid Nadiawala, who is now a big deal producer. In some of his movies he has a little clip of Divya at the beginning.

  12. 18 years ago kidnapped, brought to the orphanage when she was 3, so she is 21. I must be jaded to be thinking she is old, I expect this story to have a 17 or 18 year old heroine. Maybe it is her over the top dramatic behavior, it screams teenager.

    • Is she that over the top really, for a girl on the verge of being forced into prostitution who has just discovered she has no idea who her mother is, plus the adoptive mother she knew her whole life is dead? I can imagine I’d be more dramatic about this whole thing!

  13. Do we think the matching fabric on skirt/blouse/scarf is on purpose to show the closeness of the friends? Or just because the film production got a deal on that fabric?

    • Soni Walia I think? she’s the least famous actress, and hte principal’s son is in his first movie. Hema got big names for the other two couples, and then failed with the third.
