Ae Dil Hai Mushkil and XXX Trailers!

Two very different movies!  Both of which released “dialogue” trailers.  Although, I guess all American trailers are dialogue trailers?  Unless they are action trailers, I suppose.

First, Ae Dil!  This is the first trailer that really gave me the light and funny vibe that Karan promised us.  Which I guess makes sense, since the songs are always where the misery and depth and soul-searching comes into a film.  But the dialogue can just be fun and funny!

No subtitles (so far, I bet they will be added soon), but it’s pretty easy to follow.  It’s just Anushka and Ranbir making a lot of jokes, like “boyfriends are like films, some are just time-pass and some are blockbusters”.  Or Ranbir talking about his mother leaving, and Anushka making a joke about Bhaag Milkha Bhaag.

For plot guesses, I guess the only thing is confirmation that Ranbir and Aish have a mostly physical relationship and Ranbir and Anushka are more talkie.  Because this “dialogue” promo is all just them talking.

And then there’s XXX!  Which I guess I’ll have to see?  Just to see how Dips does.  Which would mean I also have to watch the first XXX film?  To follow my rules of always seeing the original before the sequel?  Although, it has been years and years since the last one, maybe I can just call this a reboot and skip it.

So, Dips doesn’t have any lines or much of a presence, but she gets to have a couple of seconds of beating up some guys, and holding a gun.  I guess she is going to be the sexy action person?  Not really breaking through female stereotypes, what with being effortlessly sexy and beautiful while also beating people up.  But nice breaking through of South Asian stereotypes!  No hacking, no research, no exposition person, just beating people up and being sexy!

Although, her character may not even be explicitly desi, her name is “Serena Unger”.  Which gets into the whole “color blind versus color aware” casting issue.  Is it better to expand your mind and cast anyone for any role?  Or is it better to cast anyone, but then re-write the character (at least their name, if nothing else) to reflect the heritage of the person you cast?

  1. They released another trailer and it was being referred to as the #xXxDeepikaTrailer on twitter. Sadly the trailer is not available in the U.S. but I am pretty sure that had more of Deepika in it.
