Thank you Filmilibrarian for this term/idea! By “fancy tax collector pants”, I mean the pants that Ajay wore in Raid, which were the standard office worker slacks, only very very very VERY well fitted.
But on the other hand, there is also Shahrukh in Chak De India!
And, never forget, also JHMS
And, action shot!
Ranbir in Rocket Singh, I forgot how good he looks in a turban! And also the pants.
And without turban, pants are still good!
I forgot Mirchi! How could I forget Mirchi? Prabhas may be the man to beat.
Really, all of Telugu is good! Check out Mahesh Babu
Baby Rana!
Heading back north for a second, Salman!
And another one!
Or do we prefer Aamir, with the hipster fitted look?
I don’t know what this is, but Aamir is technically wearing dress pants so I am including it
Oooo, Vijay Devaronkoda with the surprise challenge!
And in white!
How about you Prithviraj, what do you have to say to this Telugu dominance of southern pants-wearing?
He and his little hair tuft and statement belt are amused at their pretensions!
Little bit of time travel for this one, Arjun Kapoor back when he was young and skinny and shy.
Speaking of Arjuns, here is Arjun R. technically wearing pants.
And finally, the King of fitted dress pants wearing, let us all bow down before him: Young Amitabh!
What do you say, which photo would you put up in your imaginary locker to sigh over between classes?
UPDATE: I just realized I forgot something very very important!!!! And to make up, I am adding a Theme Song to this post:
The thing about these pants is that they really have to be so unassumingly bland that at first glance the wearer seems equally generic. You make the mistake of underestimating the power of the common man, so to speak, until POW, he wows you with a firm hand on your arm just in time to keep you from stepping in front of that bus.
So I say no to too-fitted (sorry, Vijay Devaronkoda) and anything that is too studied or doesn’t look off the rack.
Ajay D.
SRK in Chak De
Prithviraj
In that order.

Yes! That is exactly the appeal of the Fancy Tax Collector Pants!!!! Jeans say “working man”, fancy fitted designer pants so “rich man”, but right in between is these pants, the ones that every office worker wears and you don’t even notice them.
I will agree that Ajay, SRK, and Prithviraj’s pants all could have theoretically come off the rack. But I think it was an awfully lucky rack that happened to fit them really really well. Although I’ve found those off the rack pants at certain magical times in my life, the ones that fit like they were made for you the second you put them on. It can happen. Let us say they all are secretly slightly vain and spent 4 hours in department store trying on every brand and style until they found the best fit.

My winners are Prabhas and Ajay! And Aamir is the least favorite. Also, what is Vijay wearing? Cropped pants? Don’t like ’em. AB is good too but his bell bottoms are extra bellish…

I wish I could have gotten a good Aamir shot from Sarfarosh. He looked decent in the pants in that movie, and it was exactly the sweet spot Joyomama is describing, where you don’t notice him because he is just an average office worker looking type in off-the-rack clothes, and then suddenly POW, it is all heroic and awesome.
I suppose Amitabh couldn’t help being alive in the 70s, so it wasn’t his fault that his pants look like that. Do you think it could also be a length issue? Like, they started the bells at the usual place on the pants but then had to add on another 4-5 inches for Big B’s height and that made the bells that much wider?

Yes, must be the height. But even then he looks respectable and not swoon-worthy in pants, like Ajay or Prabhas or SRK do haha. Poor Aamir, doesn’t seem to be getting much love from us.

I can already tell you, this will be one of my favourite TGIF in 2019. With every photo (except Aamir’s) I was saying: he is the best! and then no, the next one.. 😉
My list: Prabhas in Mirchi
Amitabh (first pic)
Shahrukh in JHMS and Chak de India
Ajay

Poor Ajay! Downgraded to 4th place. But I am glad to see Amitabh get some love.

There are more than 20 photos and he is 4th, it’s a good thing.

I’m sure that’s what Kajol is saying to him right now to comfort him.

And that Amir and SRK photo is just too strange for words.

If they were both shirtless, it wouldn’t be nearly as odd. But why just Aamir?

And is Shahrukh taking his pants off or putting them on? So many questions!

Oh, yeah!!!! Aamir’s chest was so shining and white it kind of distracted me from the whole thing that is happening with Shahrukh.

Small joys. Snort.
Shah Rukh, gotta go with JHMS, for the locker pic. Prithviraj is looking fine too, though. As is Ranbir, with or without turban. I like Amitabh with the muscle car too, for that full 70s urban gritty feel.

Excellent choice of the JHMS picture. This can also inspire intellectual debate around your locker as you consider whether his hand-in-pocket posture is unfairly increasingly his perceived booty. Plus, beard and sunglasses!
Ranbir really is looking good, yet more evidence that he is sexier when he dresses and acts older.

I’m going to go with Ajay as my top pick, not just because he’s the inspiration, but because no one has the swagger that he does walking in any kind of pants! 2nd pick: Amitabh in Deewar (one of the sexiest moments/stills ever 3rd pick: Arjun but I will always remember that blue/grey suit he wears in Aurangzeb because, damn, he wore those suit pants well and honorable mention has to go to Arjun Rampal…because like Kunal Kapoor sometimes the beauty is so blinding that you never really notice what they’re wearing anyway.

Boy, watching Ajay versus Ranveer in the police uniform in Simmba really highlighted how Ajay can swagger like no one else. Fancy Tax Collector Pants require quite a bit of swagger to pull off.
And once again, poor Aamir doesn’t even make the also-ran list.

Aamir will probably never make my short list, no pun intended:) I mean he has beautiful eyes and sometimes an intensity that can mirror sex appeal but generally no thanks.

Idon’t usually find Aamir sexy, but you have got to see Amir in Dhobi Ghat. Oozes “you can’t have me” sex appeal in a withdrawn artist sort of way. 🙂

I know I’ve found Aamir sexy in something, but what? Oh! Dil Chahta Hai. My alpha male weakness Fastalking, clever, cocky, and a little bit rude, that’s all I want from my Aamir. Also, Mann. And a little bit Lagaan. And Talaash, in the early bits when he is a super cocky perfect cop hero, not later.

I have seen Dhobi Ghat and that’s one of the few roles I’ve found him attractive in! I agree also Dil Chahta Hai a bit and strangely enough I found him appealing in Thugs. But my actor crush short list is full with Arjun Kapoor, Abhishek, Hrithik (at least everything pre-Kabil), Saif Ali Khan and Ajay Devgan. Those are my five with a special mention for Kunal Kapoor and Arjun Rampal who are in a league of their own:)

And look, Saif and Ajay are making Taanaji just for you! If Hrithik does a cameo, than it is DEFINITELY for you.

Srk
He has an amazingly shapely lower half with a low center of gravity and these kind of pants really show that off.
Ajay
I don’t think sexy so much as perfection. This man is perfectly balanced and perfectly sculpted in every direction.
Prabhas
This particular photos show off an amazingly long and lean torso. Super sexy.
Amitabh
Wears thigh hugging bell bottoms like no one’s business. He was made for ’70s clothes, and visa versa.

SRK-in other posts, I haven’t liked his lower half. He can’t fill out jeans, that’s for sure. But I think the problem is more that he has slightly skinny legs, and these pants fit at the hips, where he is very blessed, more than the thighs.
Ajay-I think I mentioned this about their KWK episode, but Ajay and Kajol are really a perfect couple in terms of presenting a natural body in it’s best form. Ajay is muscled, but still has body fat and is perfectly proportioned shoulders to waist and so on. And Kajol of course is very fit for a mother of two in her late 30s, but isn’t super skinny, has normal looking arms and still has a stomach and all that, and yet also has lovely natural hair and a nicely curved figure and so on. They could go back to any time period and any place and be found equally attractive to how we find them today, you know? Timeless.
Prabhas-His leanness is such an appeal for him, and I feel like sometimes he leans away from out, puts on bulky sweaters and stuff. I don’t know why, clothes that emphasis his height are so much more attractive.
Amitabh-Agree! The 70s fashions are very unflattering on almost everyone, but then you see them on him and go “oh! That’s what it is supposed to look like!”

Would you count Shahrukh’s geeky look outfit in Main Hoon Naa as F-T-C-Pants? The one with the striped brown top. He fills those out pretty well – “Bell bottoms” 🙂
