News Round-Up 1: Shahrukh Fake Stories, Dostana 2 with Rajkummar, YRF Gets a New Hero, and Hrithik Gets a New Heroine

So many news stories! I’m catching up, so this isn’t exactly “breaking” news, but there are lots of interesting little things over the past week or so that I want to talk about with you all. I’ll break them down into many many MANY posts over the course of the day.

No Shahrukh News? We Will MAKE Shahrukh News!

Shahrukh continues to be happily living his life and not doing anything film related. Which is unacceptable to the film media, because they need those Shahrukh stories to keep the clicks rolling in! Thus, stories that aren’t exactly made up, but also aren’t really news (story here and here)

A story about someone’s next movie is almost never reliable. There’s just too many advantages to it being fake! The actor gets publicity, the film gets publicity, the director gets publicity, and no one is actually committed to anything. The Sahir Ludhianvi biopic was already used back when Abhishek was trying to recover from dropping out of the JP Dutta movie last minute, it was one of the half dozen films that it was suddenly rumored he was considering signing. And then it got attached to Shahrukh, I guess the producers wanted another big name to float.

Which isn’t to say I don’t want Shahrukh to do a Sahir Ludhianvi movie! Sensitive not handsome brilliant tragic Urdu poet? It’s perfect for him!

And then FilmFare announced, with much fanfare, that they had the reason he WASN’T signing it. And, I mean, they do. But that “reason” is a quote from months ago talking in general about how he is in no rush to sign any movie, from one of his interviews back during the China film festival. It’s not exactly “news”, and it’s certainly not in response to this story, it’s just a general statement of why he is being slow to sign his next film. There’s no actual “news” here, but the media can’t survive without a Shahrukh headline, so they will try to make it into news.

Speaking of which, BollywoodHungama has also decided that now is the time to announce as a “scoop” that Shahrukh won’t be doing another Don movie. Which isn’t even what their story supports, their “story” is about how Farhan won’t be doing another Don movie. Because he hasn’t directed in 8 years, hasn’t started the script, and is currently working as an actor. But, how is this news? We all knew this already! This is like saying “SCOOP! During the Monsoons, It Rains!” But, again, it’s an excuse to get Shahrukh into their headlines. Really, his disinterest in doing anything newsworthy is just not fair to the media, they are dying without him!

Dostana 2!

Dostana 2! Now, THAT’s newsworthy!!!! Although this is still a rumor, not confirmed. But it is a rumor I am more likely to believe since it is such an odd combination of people and so on. (story here)

According to rumor, Dostana 2 will be announced shortly, starring Janhvi Kapoor, Rajkummar Rao, and John Abraham. Yaaaaay!!!! I wonder what the plot is? I would assume Rajkummar and Janhvi are the romantic couple, how does John fit in though? And if it is a Dostana sequel, I would assume there is another “pretending a sexual identity” plot. Maybe John is Janhvi’s father and pretends to be Rajkummar’s boyfriend to get close to her? That’s a total guess, but wouldn’t it be fun?

Siddhant Chaturvedi in YRF Rom-Com

Oh, this is a happy story! I hope it is true. Siddhant Chaturvedi, the guy who stole the film in Gully Boy (Ranveer’s mentor) is rumored to have just been signed with YRF to be the lead in their next rom-com. (story here)

Siddhant was amazing in Gully Boy and deserves to get a big film. On the other hand, YRF needs fresh young faces and a new feel if they are going to have more hits. I’m hoping that casting Siddhant (if they did cast him and this story isn’t made up), means that they are looking for a different kind of hero for a different kind of film, not just going to take Siddhant and turn him into the typical YRF hero.

Anupriya Goenka and Hrithik!

Hey, another YRF story! Supposedly Anupriya Goenka has been picked to be in the Hrithik-Tiger YRF movie. Vaani Kapoor is supposed to be the other heroine, so I am guessing Anupriya will be opposite Hrithik? (story here)

Anupriya was the lead nurse in Tiger Zinda Hai, cast for her acting ability and not to dance or do a love scene or anything. And she did great! I am very excited for her to be in this movie, because I think she would make it better. And also because (hopefully, again) it is a sign of YRF thinking in a new way about their films.

  1. Yeah, media is desperate about ShahRukh keeping a low profile.
I think the quote Filmfare tried to sell as news was from April because in an interview at Beijing he had told to anounce his next film in June, but then quickly corrected it when back in Mumbai with the quote then published multifold.
I don’t believe in film rumours anymore 😉 (and in other neither)

    • Yeah, the one thing I really like about twitter (among the many many things I hate) is that it is the simplest clearest easiest way for someone to announce a project. I don’t bother with rumors any more for stuff like Shahrukh’s movies, because I know when it is a real story, it will show up on his twitter feed. Everything else is unreliable and not worth bothering with.

  2. Anupriya really stood out in TZH, didn’t she?

But how is YRF chasing is female heroines. Anushka, Bhumi, Vaani, Parineeti are all women who at least started as talent first looks second types of heroines. Don’t get me wrong, they are all beautiful, but they stood out on acting talent (or at least the promise of acting talent). Anupriya is no different.

    • Well, she’s older. And she’s being put opposite Hrithik, not in a smaller budget film first to try her out. But you are right, YRF has been looking for talent over looks for a long time. Wouldn’t it be great if this story has it a little bit wrong and we end up with a mature rom-com starring Anupriya opposite Siddhant Chaturvedi?

  3. From what I’ve realized over some time, RCE is a leak-proof ship. Rumors about SRK are always incorrect because nothing comes out from his team or his company. If there were sources dripping out info, we would have heard about the Lion King dubbing at least a few days ahead of them announcing it themselves. Even some journalists on twitter have mentioned that they can’t get information about SRK and the gossip always turns out wrong unlike with others. They resort to inventing things so that they have some stories to circulate. Nowadays they resort to stalking his kids’ friend’s instagram accounts so they can write headlines like “SRK’s daughter partying in Cyprus!”

He should just relent and give them something. Last we heard he left for London with his wife and son and disappeared. No twitter posts, no photos, no nothing. Just post something random so they relent from spreading the same article about him taking a break every 2 days. It gives them a sadistic pleasure to write about how he’s taking time off after the “debacle” of Zero and they resurrect the same article every 2 or 3 days as if they’re saying something new.

    • That’s interesting! I hadn’t thought about it that way before. But you are right, with other people it seems like the rumors are maybe 50/50 right, with Shahrukh it seems more like 90% wrong versus 10% right. And that 10% is usually when the rumor comes less than 24 hours before the official announcement.

The Don 2 rumor (which was about Farhan, not SRK) had the usual anonymous “sources” just saying what we already knew, “Farhan hasn’t started the script, he is focused on acting”. Heck, Farhan says that himself! But the equivalent SRK rumors don’t even have anonymous “sources”, at the most they are based on seeing someone going in and out of his house, which means essentially nothing. That’s the only data the media can gather, staking out Mannat and watching Farhan walk in the door is as much as they can find.

I do feel a little resentful on SRK’s behalf, because he did give them something, the relaunch of the Meer Foundation website. That was supposed to be the big story, he wants them talking about that instead of movie rumors. And of course everyone ignored it. I know these headlines probably get more clicks, but at least that was real new news! With an official tweet and everything! They could have pulled quotes from his statement and stuff and headlined it “the real reason” Shahrukh is giving so much to charity.

      • Even about the Letterman show, there was not a peep. People online found out when 1iota posted it – it’s an American website that lists all talk show guests and arranges for tickets. It was fans that found out through that website and the media stalks fan clubs. The funny thing is that even then, they were pretending they got the news from “sources” and putting a question mark at the end of the headline as if they’re not sure. There cannot be a media dumber than the BW one.

In most other actor’s cases, they would have started leaking it much more in advance to get into the news. SRK just doesn’t do it and I think his team also knows to keep quiet and not function as media sources. It must definitely be frowned upon internally because I don’t see others running such a tight ship.

  4. Rehashing his quote with always mentioning Zero and inventing rumours is deliberately done to make him appear kind of ‘finished’, I think. It seems to me that media make it with a glee.

  5. I feel like I’ve been hearing about Dostana 2 ever since I started following the Hindi industry five years ago. I’ll believe it’s actually happening when they start shooting.

I’m glad Siddhant Chaturvedi is getting a shot as a lead! Though I feel like yrf rom-coms can be a bit of a hit or a miss.

When is the Hrithik-Tiger movie supposed to come out again?

    • Looks like it is supposed to be soon! Although there really hasn’t been much about it so far. Maybe it is all done and they are just waiting for Super 30 to release before starting the promotions, or maybe it isn’t actually all done but they haven’t announced a new release date yet.

      • Hmm, I’m not really interested in seeing it unless it has great songs and a fun trailer. But so far I haven’t liked a single Siddharth Anand movie…

        • Oh right, we were just talking about this! I love Bang Bang, but then I realized he made Salaam Nameste and Ta Ra Rum Pum Pum and Bachne Ae Haseeno and it made me question EVERYTHING.

If this movie is like Bang Bang, just super silly fun, I think he has a light touch and a good sense of timing and can make it work. But if he tries to do anything with emotions and relationships, I’m out.

          • See, I didn’t even like Bang Bang much so I’m quite surprised that he’s still getting to make movies after he’s made so many bad movies. But I guess it does make sense after Bang Bang was a pretty big hit. But I do enjoy the songs in his movies so with Hrithik and Tiger I’m sure those will be great at least.

          • I think he’s 50/50. Bachne Ae Haseeno and Bang Bang were big hits, Salaam-Nameste wasn’t bad, Anjaana Anjaani and Ta Ra Rum Pum Pum were big flops.

  6. What’s with kjo starting distant rumours again and again with new set of actors .
We all know that it was a good movie and the magic can’t be re created so just y ??
And y is he becoming desperate to establish janvi kapoor ?? Some or other leak happens all the time

  7. Your quote above: “Shahrukh continues to be happily living his life and not doing anything film related. Which is unacceptable to the film media, because they need those Shahrukh stories to keep the clicks rolling in!”

Perhaps his sabbatical will encourage the media to treat him better and stop rubbishing him at every opportunity. I’ve never understood why they find glee in the prospect of his career failing as they get such mileage out of him. Surely they need his career to go on and on…

This long and unexpected break could almost be a marketing tool. Create a world-wide ShahRukh shortage and wait for the stocks to rise.

    • I think it’s going to work, at the very least he can control the content of coverage much better. If there is absolutely nothing else Shahrukh happening, then the media HAS to report on what he wants them to report.
