Shahrukh Summer Discussion Post: Why Has He Gotten Sexier as He Has Gotten Older?

You ready to put on your thinking caps? This is a question that has puzzled the global community for years, but I have faith in the power of crowdsourcing, I believe our team of experts can answer this underlying Question of the Universe. Just like genome code mapping.

Of course, this question has two possible interpretations. What is the underlying reason and cause for his greater sexiness, OR what is the exact manner and elements which have made his sexiness greater? I will accept either answer.

For example, as an underlying cause, you can simply point out that age brings wisdom and confidence and (in Shahrukh’s case) increasing power. And all of that is sexy.

Or you could argue for the exact manner of his increasing sexiness, and point out that as his face and body loses baby fat and gains wrinkles and texture, it is increasingly captivating. Each movement and expression are heightened, allowing his sexiness more clearly to burn through.

I suppose you could also argue with the premise of this post, say that he has NOT gotten sexier as he ages, but then you would be wrong. I mean look at this:

  1. I think it’s his facial muscles. The subtle changes in expression that characterize his acting are now now visible. The trade off is that his eyebrows are less dramatic (age, grooming) and his lips not as full and smooth (that’s what cigarettes do).

and now I need a cold shower.

    • I would add that the facial muscles draw you in to focusing on his face in a very physical way. With other actors I feel a kind of distance, but with Shahrukh when he does the little micro-expressions like a twitch of the lips or a flare of the nostrils, it’s like I can imagine feeling it under my hands, goes from being visual to tactile. Before, when the expressions were bigger, I had a strong sense that I was watching an Actor who was playing to the galleries. Now, it feels very intimate.

  2. I agree wholeheartedly with joyomama and you, M. I think he’s learned how to use his face to express emotion in a more subtle way…I’ll attribute that to his increased maturity as a person and as an actor. I think you see his life experience now on his face in general and in his acting.

Just FYI, at my BollyPop dance class each week we end up talking about him at some point (“Rachel, there’s your man”) when we dance to Udi Udi Jai or Chammak Chalo or somerhing else. The 20-somethings mostly think he was his hottest earlier in his career. They’re totally wrong, but just to mention that our belief is not universal…

    • Huh! I was a 20-something just 5 years ago, and I sure as shooting knew he was hotter as an old man than he ever was when he was young. Clearly I need some of our younger commentaters to weight in on this.

What are your feelings on the importance of “older raspier more controlled voice” versus “older wrinkled more controlled face” in making him sexier? Is it 50/50? 20/80? Is the voice meaningless?

      • I’ve was like you when I was a young’n too…I was a huge fan of the TV show Hart to Hart and as a teen I was totally crushed out on Robert Wagner who was 50-ish at the time…

I think the voice is meaningful. I’d go 60/40 face/voice. His voice does get me every time. In Jab Harry, the morning they are leaving for Mayank’s wedding, “Sejal, come here” ay!

        • That’s interesting. It was one of my favourite shows too when I was, don’t know, maybe five or six years old in the mid 80s. I loved it. I liked the series, but was too young to find anything sexy, obviously. haha.

  3. He looks more intense now, leaner and somehow inward looking. There is quiet self -assurance and mystery behind his eyes, which is very sexy.
It it could also be that his fanbase is growing older with him so his older self appeals more. His young self is rather childlike to me now, cute but not sexy.

  4. I agree with all the comments above.

And I’ll add that there is also the law of supply and demand. When he was younger, there were many cute and/or sexy men on-screen vying for our eyeballs.

However, most people don’t age well, and men age worse than women, but it appears to be the other way because of how much society associates female beauty with youth. So when the occasional man not only ages well but looks better than in his youth, people are bound to take notice.

    Re above comments –
When you are middle aged, it’s 60/40 voice/face. The effect of the voice on your decision is very subconscious though.

Long live Hart to Hart! Back then both Robert and Stephanie defined my ideal of what adults were supposed to look like. I even had her hairdo as a teen 🙂

I’m guessing though that the 20 somethings in question prefer mid career srk, 2000-2010 SRK, as that is his most mainstream look.

    • I like your supply and demand point. I feel like Shahrukh isn’t the only one who benefited from that oddity. Arjun Rampal, for example, has always been an extremely handsome man, but as he ages and looks better and better, it gets more and more notice. At least, by me.

And my goodness, you all have almost convinced me to check out Hart to Hart!

  5. Young Shah Rukh was so eager to please, hiding behind a mask of bravado. Cute but also a bit tiring after a while. Older Shah Rukh knows himself inside and out, flaws and all, and is good with it, and pretty sure you’ll be good with it also. Plus he’s extremely competent and compassionate. Both are so, so sexy.

    • Yes, tiring! Older Shahrukh has slowed down to a speed that it feels like you can keep up with, instead of always chasing after him.
