Shahrukh Summer/Ranbir Hate Week: Which Ranbir Role Would You Give to Shahrukh?

Oo oo! Combined theme post! Love and hate, brought together in one discussion post.

Do you hate Ranbir onscreen and wish anyone else could have played those roles? Than you can join us in discussing what Shahrukh could have done better!

Do you love Shahrukh and wish he could play all the parts in the world? Than you can join us in removing Ranbir and replacing him with Shahrukh.

It’s a double appeal post! Ranbir haters AND Shahrukh lovers! And if you happen to fit into both of those categories, extra extra fun.

Let’s see, most of Ranbir’s roles were kind of childish and would be a poor fit for aging SRK. But there’s still a few that would work well!

Raajneeti: Ranbir’s character is the NRI outsider, the forgotten brother. Wouldn’t Shahrukh have been interesting in this role? A little old, but that would add to it, he would be even more firmly implanted overseas and outside of the Indian setting. Plus, he would be playing Arjun Rampal’s brother, and someone who just isn’t that into Katrina Kaif. Perfect!

Tamasha: In this case I think the age would actually add to it. Instead of a young man trapped in what should have been a “promising” career but has turned into a dead end, it would be a middle-aged man who is officially at the dead end and just riding out 20 years to retirement. And his relationship with Deepika would have the added dynamic of this much younger, beautiful, and more successful woman who is into him.

Rockstar: A lot of work needed here, I just want to rescue the beautiful songs from the flawed movie. If the hero is a middle-aged hanger on and dreamer in the small town music scene, decides to confess his “love” for the prettiest girl in town who is about to be married, then gives up everything and goes to stay at a shrine, afterwards his music is deeper and better and he gets a record contract, and then everything stays the same. Except better, because Shahrukh.

What do you think? What Ranbir movies would you pick to remake? Or, of my three, which would you pick first?

  1. I agree about Tamasha. I didn’t feel Ranbir was terrible, but I felt he played two different people rather than a single person in different situations. SRK could have really brought something more to that film..

    • Yes! A performance that integrated the two halves would have worked better in a lot of ways. Like, we could understand why Deepika stuck with him for so long, because she saw parts of his Corsica personality within the dull one.

  2. Oh, interesting! I can totally see SRK doing Rajneeti and OWNING it! The manipulative mind.. the chess moves. Ranbir was good.. but the kind of magic SRK brings is something entirely different!

    • Oh yeah!!!! And the ultimate vulnerability and desire to just escape this whole messed up world. Plus the subtle message of his character being helpless in front of women (his fiancee who he can’t disappoint, Katrina who he hands all the power to).

  3. I’ll go with Rockstar simply because Ranbir playing tortured and depressed just makes me laugh. He is so privileged and not that good an actor that it’s very hard to believe. It’s like when a rich kid in high school complains about his parents and how much his life sucks and all you can do is roll your eyes. You can give him endless close-ups but that does not automatically mean brilliant acting!

At least with SRK, the pain would be believable.

    • Oh yeah. What wouldn’t be believable is the whining and not doing anything about it. Another reason to change the cast, make him Shahrukh and the whole plot changes.

  4. So all the Ranbir roles I have seen I can’t imagine SRK doing at all so I’m going to give a silly answer and say ADHM! He can have a double role in it! It will bring him back to his unrequited love roots! Reverse JTHJ where Anushka doesn’t love him because she’s hung up on an ex! The super weird “let’s make srk younger cgi” could show up again! Aishwarya’s interest in young!SRK could be because he looks like old!SRK and then there’s like some super dramatic reveal when old!SRK shows up for his cameo! This would probably be a really terrible movie but maybe it will be ridiculously terrible! 😂

    • I love this idea!!!!! Can we have Old!Shahrukh come back for the end credits bit? When it’s supposed to be years after the events of the film and the hero is being interviewed?

          • I think he should look different from Old!SRK, but also different from Young!SRK. Like Raees SRK opposite reality SRK, versus Young Kaali SRK.

Alternative suggestion, all the characters are played by SRK. Aish and Anushka are him in drag, and then Old!SRK and Young!SRK, and Beard!SRK for the Fawad role. It’s very deep, ultimately those closest to us are understood only as projections of our own personality.

  5. Tamasha is a good one, that would be a much better movie with SRK instead of Ranbir.

Rajneeti was the first movie where I saw Ranbir as a limited actor not up to the part, with bad effects for the film as a whole. But I cast Shahid in that one, I think he’d play it cooler and meaner than SRK. Shah Rukh, even in his dark roles, can’t help but connect with all the other characters around him, where that character ends up more as a sociopath who betrays everyone who loves him.

    • Oh Shahid would be great in that!!!! I also like to think of Shahid in Rockstar and/or Tamasha, since Imtiaz used him already in Jab We Met to great effect. But yes, Raajneeti would have been really good for him. Especially with his kind of baby face, everyone would underestimate him.
