Hey! I’m on YouTube!

Want to see a really grainy photo of me getting excited and talking off the cuff about stuff? I am here for you! Pardesi/MovieMavenGal/My Real Life Friend invited me to be part of one of her youtube videos, we recorded it splitscreen through skype on my funky computer (thus the slightly poor video quality), but it let’s you see me get all excited about movie star gossip, and who doesn’t love that?

    • It’s quite long, sorry! I get excited when I talk about Shashi.

      • You don’t need to apologize to me, of all people. I’m just stunned how knowledgeable you’re about Indian movie industry. I claim to only know some stuff about Shashi and maybe Rekha, and that too because of your posts on her.

For instance, Shashi did the distribution for Bobby? I had no idea until recently. He only stepped in, because Mera Naam Joker had lost so much money and the distributors had been rude to Raj. He, of course lost money, even on a hit movie like Bobby because he was the worst businessman of all time.

        • Such a bad businessman! Kind of proves the theory that “all rich people are terrible and that is why they are rich”. Shashi, sweet sweet man, obviously was missing that sense of “money is more important than people”. My impression is, from what people have said about him, that was almost a conscious choice. To turn down the directors of the movies he produced when they asked for more money, or question it, or question the figures given him by sub-distributors, would be insulting and hurt their feelings and maybe damage the friendship. Not worth it! And thus, he never made any money.

  1. It was a super fun discussion, and nice to have a chat int his time of being stuck in our houses not seeing faces other than family.

Hope we can do another one soon. Do let us know if there is a topic you’d like to hear!

  2. I’ve only watched the first five minutes, but already I see a few corrections need to be made re Aamir Khan. You say that he’s not from a “really big” film family, but actually his uncle was a very consistently successful producer. More importantly, you completely failed to mention that Aamir’s own father was also a producer, though not as successful as his uncle. Finally, what is your basis for saying that for QSQT they just took Aamir because he was cheap?? It was very definitely a “launch” movie for Aamir, well orchestrated with a huge publicity campaign to introduce Aamir to the public prior to the movie’s release (and suppressing the fact of his marriage). This was the most surprising thing for me to hear.

    • Thanks for watching! I think your comments are more along the lines of shadings of meaning than actual corrections. His uncle may have been a successful producer, but they still weren’t a Really Big film family. Not the Chopras or the Kapoors or even the Mukherjees. If you are casting someone because they are family and they are cheap, you are still going to try to promote them heavily for the health of the film you are releasing. And I don’t know why I should mention that Aamir’s father was a producer, I talk about QSQT and Yaadon Ki Baarat, and those were his uncle’s films. His uncle had more influence on his career than his father did. I may not have said things the exact way you would have said them, but there is nothing inaccurate in what I state.
