This is a post I put up for women directors week. I had a little sub-category for women choreographers, and that’s all thanks to Saroj. She broke down that barrier and made choreography a female space.
Have I complained about how hard it is to find credits for choreographers? SO HARD! And it shows an innate disrespect for their role. And also an innate confusion over their role. Some songs are directed primarily by the main director, some by the choreographer, sometimes the choreographer merely gives the dance steps and the main director puts together the rest of the song. And almost always a film is a mix of all these things, plus with additional choreographers thrown in. I got caught and miss-credited “Kaike Paan” to Farah earlier because she is listed as “choreographer” in the credits of Don. But no! She did some (probably the “Main Hoon Don” song just based on filming style), and Saroj did some, and other people did other stuff.
These are the songs that I am almost completely sure Saroj did, but I could still be wrong. And I am definitely leaving stuff out just because I don’t know 100% that it was hers. Like, Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman. She split choreography duties with P.L. Raj, who did which song? “Meri Mehbooba”, should that be included? Saroj and Ahmed Khan are both listed as choreographers on Pardes, and it feels Saroj-y, but that’s not a sure argument for including it.
Anyway, this is the best I can do! If you have seen interviews with Sarojji or Shahrukh where they specifically discuss working on other songs together, let me know what I am missing and I will add it!
“Yeh Kaali Kaali Aankhen”
“Khaike Paan Banaraswala”
“Mehndi Laga Ke Rakhna”
“Tu Mere Saamne”
“Pal Pal Hai Bhaari”
