Woo-hoo! A movie I haven’t seen!!!! And neither have many of you! This will be nerve-wracking, what if we don’t like it?
Ladies Vs Ricky Bahl is on Prime, but SUBTITLES WILL NOT WORK ON THE TV!!!! Because Prime is a bad bad BAD platform, some of their Hindi films have a subtitle program that only displays on computers and phones, and it looks like this is one of them. You can try renting it on youtube or google play instead, or on einthusan. Or you can just set up your viewing so you can use a laptop (which is what I will probably do).
I will put a “and PLAY” comment below when it is time to start, and then we can all just comment along together.
I like him and all but I just can’t buy him as a normal sexy sex symbol. He has the vibe of a guy you laugh at but sleep with once, nobody in the world would think this guy is marriage material.
LikeLike
Is he trying to be marriage material?
LikeLike
Well, they have to take him seriously for the con, right?
LikeLike
Except, I think he is careful to not be TOO marriage material-y. Like, even with Pari, he was “fun boyfriend but we wouldn’t get married for at least a few years” material. He doesn’t want to really trick these women. I hope. I don’t want to hate our hero.
LikeLike
True, but I wouldn’t trust this man to buy me milk. He’d do a carefree dance and return with another bloody hat.
LikeLike
I’m gonna make a guess, that they will structure this movie so that Ranveer dates the girls for an “in”, but the con isn’t straightforward. There is no way we could sympathize with someone who takes money to marry/not marry a woman. But flirting/dating a woman briefly to set up the con seems slightly less bad. Also, I hope, he will never cross a line of taking advantage. Seemed pretty clear that he and Pari just danced and maybe kissed and that was it.

I’m going to purposely not comment on your theories as the movies goes on.

You can only remove one: Ranveer’s hat, ranveer’s beard, ranveer’s ponytail, ranveer’s glasses. GO!
I pick the hat. It’s not the worst of them, but it is the hardest to ignore.

I pick ponytail. I think there are many two men on this planet who can pull off a ponytail, and Ranveer is not one of them.

They are sophisticated cons, but the money is big enough that it’s kind of believable. Plus makes the character more interesting. He’s smooth and tricky, not some two bit hustler.

It’s honestly the best part of the movie. The detail of his cons. And also Pari.

Okay, I may need help on this con. Ranveer overheard a young executive wanting a way to impress her boss. He then made sure she saw him installing a painting at a gallery and pretended to be the charming employee of a wealthy art collector. She thought she was getting a deal and underpaying for the painting in a somewhat slimy way, and because of that didn’t think twice about paying the agent fee to fake Ranveer in cash. He played it as “you can trust me, we are both struggling employees of powerful men”.
Right? Was that it?
LikeLike
Pretty much, except she didn’t underpay for the painting. It was an artist whose work couldn’t be bought because no works were on the market.

Dipannita is drop dead gorgeous but also looks like you could break her in half. Works for the character and the contrast with Pari.

Never noticed before, but in all the cons, he’s not swindling the women out of their own money. He’s using his charm to turn them into pawns to swindle their fathers or boss. So they’re fighting back for their honor but really for their families (or professional reputation, in Dipannita’s case).
LikeLike
Yes! He is just using the women as a road to get to the real target. Except for Saira, where they are a modest family and the money he takes from them hurts all of them equally, not like Pari where her Dad doesn’t even feel the loss.
LikeLike
Hmm. So his first con was the one where no one was trying to cheat him, and the one where he most mislead the girl. Next con, he kept his distance from Pari and arranged it so the con only worked if the mark was trying to con him in turn. And third con, he picked a really tough strong woman and barely romanced her.
Also, I know Anushka is coming, but I want him to marry this nice widow.

His first con was extremely lousy, in that he was morally terrible. However, he looked SO CUTE doing it.

Hmm. So there is a bit of a class there here, rich spoiled girls hiring shopgirl. But it doesn’t work exactly, because Saira is probably more powerless than Anushka, and Pari is second generation rich. Unless they give Anushka a really tragic backstory?
LikeLike
Saira ran her own shop. As a minority and widow she can be seen as powerless, but really she has more power than a shop girl.
LikeLike
Yeah, but it’s complicated, because it was a shop in a small city in a lower class neighborhood, while Anushka is in the top city in a top store. So you also get into education/urban/money stuff. Anushka’s commission for a month of sales was probably higher than Saira’s shop’s profits.
