Discussion Post: What is Your LEAST Favorite Christmas Song? Complain Here!!!!

What a festive discussion topic! In this time of 24 hour Christmas music everywhere, I know there are songs you have gotten absolutely sick of.

There are so many possibilities here! But I think I have to go with “Grandma Got Run Over By a Raindeer”. It’s meanspirited, it’s unpleasant sounding, and it will stick in your ear so you can’t get rid of it.

How about you? What is the song that just makes you cringe and dive for the controls to skip it?

  1. That is definitely an ear worm of the worst kind.

Can I complain about something that is not a song? Not complain, exactly, kind of vent. I just finished watching Paava Kadhaigal and I am so depressed. Amazing acting thru out and the stories hook you even tho you can’t help but know they’re going to end badly. The young homosexual boy in the first story and Sai Pallavi in the last, had me weeping. And what’s the deal with Kalki? She looks grotesque.

    Anyone else see it?

  2. Last Christmas. It’s worse some years than others, but I become overdosed pretty quickly. Da-da-da-da-daa.

I feel bad now about finding “Grandma Got Run Over By a Raindeer” kind of funny. It really is kind of an anti Christmas song, but if things have gotten too saccharine lately, it can work as a palate cleanser for me. But then again, the song isn’t really known here, so I only ever hear it by choice.

    • I never overdose on Last Christmas!!!!! It’s the perfect shouting/singing song, which is all I want in a song. Well, maybe I should say “it’s the perfect Christmas Car Song”. It is irritating when it pops up while you are in a store or hanging out around the Christmas tree, but it is the perfect car song.

      • I can definitely live with Last Christmas on my compilation CD that I put on for driving home for Christmas. But it’s just so much THE Christmas song that plays in all stores, on all radio stations and at all Christmas markets – and way before official Christmas season too – that I feel like I’m never *choosing* to listen to it.

  3. Thank God they never play that or The Christmas Shoes here.

I really don’t like either the John Lennon one or the McCartney one, though the McCartney one is slightly less awful to me. Much as I love Greg Lake, I don’t like his either. I want to be preached at at most about consumerism at Christmas and nothing else.

  4. I don’t like the BandAid one and John Lennon one, I’m also tired of Shakin’ Stevens “Merry Christmas Everyone”. Looks like the Brits are not good in Christmas song, obviously except George Michael.

    • Yes! Let’s make this the rule! British people can’t do Christmas songs. German carols and American pop, that’s the way.

  5. I don’t have a single song, but just the whole lot of Finnish Christmas songs that we all know will be played once again this year in our house gives me a headache. There isn’t much room to try to let the music be anything different and it irritates me to no end.

    • My parents get very sick of Christmas music very fast, so the only way I could get them to let me play it in the house at December was to constantly find new different obscure versions. Although we also had three basic records, Bing, Raffi, and Joan Baez (why Joan Baez???)

      • You’re so lucky! I just find the Holidays a bit of an anxiety-filled time though I love them, especially buying presents and gingerbread and the lights etc.

But the rest with the same old food, same songs, same people, same routine and etiquette on how to dress. It’s all SO FINNISH!! SO PROPER!!! Which makes it hard, because I don’t feel that Finnish myself.

And I am honestly at the point where it irritates me to no end. I would just like a Christmas by myself right now, or at least some change, but there’s no chance of that happening anytime soon. I am just at the point where I want to be away from my family and make Christmas traditions of my own.

Sorry for complaining at a good time of year, but I just feel like I’m at my wit’s end right now when it comes to my family.

        • I completely understand!!!! Togetherness at the holidays is always stressful, and this year it is togetherness on top of togetherness. I am so glad that I have my own apartment to escape to for half the week. And yes, Christmas was more fun when I got to have my own traditions. I still do Christmas week itself like usual with the family, but the rest of the season I get to put up my own trees and listen to my own music and drink my own eggnog.

  6. You gaijin are amateurs when it comes to annoying Christmas songs:

Note the annoying eighties drum machine, accompanied by annoying eighties synthesizer! The title is even more annoying: My Boyfriend is Santa Claus.

Maybe it’s not that bad, but I cannot wait until I don’t have to hear all 89 verses every time I go to the grocery store.

    • I feel like if all the drums and blech were dropped out, and it was sung slightly slower, it might be okay. But that is a lot of work to save a song from intense irritation to “mildly acceptable”.
