2021 Wish List: What Break-Up Do You Most Want in 2021?

This sounds dark, but it comes from a place of love. Some couples just should not be together! They will blossom and be happier apart.

Alia Bhatt-Ranbir Kapoor

It’s just NOT GOOD!!!! I don’t like it and I want it to go away, and Alia to go back to being young and having fun and making lots of movies, and Ranbir to go back to having a series of fun gossip stories.

Aamir Khan-Metaphorical Social Lesson Movies

Let’s agree that it was good while it lasted, but now it is time to MOVE ON. There’s just nothing left here, the spark is gone. There is a limit to how many times your character can represent an Idea versus representing A Person.

Salman Khan-Shirtlessness

I love a shirtless Salman, of course. But let’s be real, it has become a crutch. Leave the shirt on, get naked in your soul, you know? Let’s see some of that performing style!

The Hindi Film Industry-Sports Biopics

Enough already! I just DON’T CARE ABOUT CRICKET!!!! It’s never gonna happen. Also, there are very few sports stories that are actually original. Not so many different angles you can take.

The Hindi Film Industry-Soft Social Message Movies

If they want to make more movies about spousal abuse or communal violence or racism, go for it! But I am DONE with movies about “girl’s education” or “medical reform” or some other unchallenging meaningless thing.

Chhapaak: Brutal truth told the hard way

Okay, which of these break-ups do you put at the top of your 2021 wish list?

This is REALLY HARD! I think selfishly it would be sports biopics, because I find them really really boring. But in a broader sense, in terms of long term health of the industry and making movies I would like, I think it’s the soft social message. It’s turning off the audience, I think, way more than the sports biopics. And I want the audience to sticka round.

    • He always looks miserable in their joint photos and Alia looks like she is jollying him along. Why would you want to date someone like that????

      • You know in that coffee with Karan season 6 episode of alia and Deepika, it felt great to see Deepika saying about acceptance and how time has healed her from the heartbreak. But at the same time felt bad for aaliya how she gonna deal with it. At lot of times it seems like Deepika saying silently in her mind to aaliya…I m glad I m out of it , now u will see .

        • Yeaaaaahh. I feel like the easiest way to be a friend with an ex is if you are really really glad to no longer be in that relationship. Which is maybe where Dips is in her life.

          • Yes very true. Dips seem to be in such a secure, blissful and matured state right now. And I think the fact that she has come out of that relationship which totally broke her, must be one of the big emotional achievement for her. And yes, when you r really glad to not be with the stupid guy anymore, when it was that bad, when even after giving your maximum effort, you felt an emptiness, then only you can be friend with your ex. The more friendship you are able to sustain with your ex, means it was that bad…..hehe . So bad that we r friends now .

          • I’m also thinking of Salman and his exes. Except in that case, everyone seems way healthier about it. Yeah, he cheated and was weird and unpredictable and horrible as a boyfriend. But once you break up, he’s AWESOME!!!! Smooth transition from dating to friendship with all the bad gone and only the good left. But with Ranbir, seems like it’s a bit more of an unpleasant journey. Like, you don’t even want him as a friend because there is just nothing worth keeping for a good long while. And eventually you decide you wouldn’t mind hanging out with him in a group, because you just feel nothing for him any more.

          • Yes ranbir is a classical case of a typical covert narcissist who want each and every person in his life to exist for HIM. And a selfish person is not a very interesting person if you got to know him fully, he infuses a negative energy of I, me and mein vibes. I often think how much bad that phase must have been for Deepika.

          • Yes! That is exactly what it feels like! Just exhausting to be around. And then you break up and are FREE, and suddenly hanging out with him is fine because you are so happy to not be there any more.

  1. Aamir has turned into a salad. The fact that it is not bad doesn’t mean we will like it.
Social message movies are never going to stop,it is just that the mainstream stars started accepting those roles in recent times. They will continue to thrive with less mainstream crew and audiences. My personal gripe is against period dramas, and part of me is afraid that Takht will revive the trend.I am all up for boring intellectual pseudo historicals in the vein of Sahib Bibi aur Ghulam,Bulbbul,Byomkesh Bakshi or Bengali and Marathi documentaries, but please no historical epics with propaganda.
Ranbir is too weird a guy for me to understand.Someone on this blog also mentioned that Alia has started drinking and it was showing in her acting in Sadak 2.If that is the case, someone needs to breathe some sense into her head.

  2. I can’t choose one. They are all terrible. I would add no more Akshay Kumar headed “jingoricals” (tm Asim Burney on Twitter), which is a jingoistic historical flick designed to fluff the Modi regime.

    • Luckily, I think the historical phase is already fading away, THANK GOODNESS. But the soft social message, I am DONE. No more Mission Mangal, no more Padman, no more Good Newwz.

  3. This is so easy: Alia-Ranbir and jingoistic nonsense of all kind – not just historicals.

On the other hand — I know am about to say something VERY controversial for this community –but one of my absolute favorite genres of movies are sports films (especially if they are based on a real life inspiring story). I love them and I am a total sucker for them. In a similar vein, if the social message is nuanced and interesting, I love those movies too. 2020 has obviously not been a good year for movies, but so far this year, if I had to list my favorite movies of the year, they would be Thappad, Guilty, and Gunjan Saxena. I truly enjoyed all of them so much and watched them for a second time with my dad, and was able to introduce these films to him, which was so special.

    • Okay, you can go watch ’83 if it ever comes out, and we can all continue to ignore it. SO SICK OF CRICKET!!!!

I’m okay with Thappad and stuff, it’s the soft social message that kills me. The movies that don’t actually have anything original to say, but just say it to get marks for being special. BLECH!!!!!

      • I agree with your comment on soft social messages. Especially when it’s Akshay mansplaing them.

But yes, I’m so excited for 83, Toofan, and Rashmi Rocket. I am a little worried though that 83 might be similar to M.S. Dhoni in that in Dhoni, SSR immersed himself so into the role and the movie stuck to Dhoni’s life which made for great acting and lovely script but kind of a boring movie. I hope 83 is a bit more fun than that.

        • I’m stuck on how 83 can possibly be fun and not-boring when it is ultimately still about CRICKET, World’s Most Boring Sport.

          • What’s so ironic about my movie tastes is that I don’t actually like watching sports in real life. I especially dislike watching cricket and still don’t understand it. Yet, if it is in a movie, I’m all about it! I’m strange.

  4. I’d say the Akshay Kumar social message movies should end more than the other social message movies like Chhaappak (which in hindsight is more of a movie with the documentary feel and does send an important message that needs to be said, but I need some time to watch it again – it’s a good one time watch) and also the Ranbir-Alia situation. Aamir’s movies right now aren’t the kinds I watch anyway, TOH made me lose a bit of trust and I am just not invested in his new movies at all.

I am only holding hope for Takht for the possibility of seeing Janhvi dance Kathak in period costumes and positive Muslim representation and for my own fascination for the Mughal era in general.

    • So, your break-up wish would be Akshay Kumar and Social Message? I think I could live with that. Somehow the brianless social messages are so much mor eirritating when he is involved with them

  5. I’m fine with Ranbir -Alia as long as Alia is still known as Alia Bhatt and not just Ranbir Kapoor’s wife. I’m also fine with Aamir’s films, sports biopics (their is always that one gem a year), and social message films (at least a those are steps in the right direction). What I can no longer stand is Salman and shirtlessness.

  8. Break up of movies and roast movie reviews on you tube by any useless person. People can have their opinions yes, but there should be some criteria and qualification for putting a detailed video or written review of a movie or show.

    Like

    • YES! I am so sick of people tearing down movies just for kicks without thinking through what they are saying and why. Also, of course, sick of people watching those videos so they can steal “funny” one liner critiques of films. And other people watching those videos and taking the criticisms seriously and dismissing a film for being racist/misogynist/whatever without watching it themselves. UGH!
