Saturday WachAlong: Chak De India! 7:30am Chicago Time!

Happy Saturday! I got my coffee, I got my whipped cream on top, I got my dark chocolate mix added into the coffee, and I’ve got my bacon jerky. Let’s do this!!!

Chak De! It’s on Amazon, and also einthusan, and also your DVD shelf probably. Oh and remember, once we finish watching it we will need to give opinions on which team member is most attractive in a ladies-who-like-ladies kind of way. So head back to This Post for that!!!

I’ll put up a “And PLAY” comment at 7:30am and we will go straight along commenting from then on.

  1. I love that he is running with them! Didn’t even occur to me until just now, but in most sports movies, the coach is on a bike pacing them. He’s not asking them to do any more than he does.

  2. I think this is the only song in the movie right? I set it as my alarm this morning and this was the only song that came up when I tried to search for the movie

  3. This movies does such a nice job showing how limited the resources are that are allocated to girl’s hockey. SRK has to draw plays in dirt. And Komal has to get tea from the stall.

  4. It is hard to imagine being so obsessed with a sport, but then even mi esposo thinks about soccer all the time when he is coaching it.

    • Oh man!!!!! That is a really really hard question. I think I am going with Abhimanyu. He is young, he should at least be open to new ideas. Tripathi has been thinking the same way for 30 years.

    • Still going with Abhimanyu. He thinks he has Preety’s best interests at heart when he’s not listening to her at all. Tripathi is doing what’s best for himself and what’s best financially, which is inherently evil.

  5. I watched this with someone recently who pointed out, if you have a hockey team ready to go to the moon, YOU SEND THEM TO THE MOON!!!! That’s AMAZING!!!!

  6. I think now Shahrukh is off his mirror practice speech script. He is just talking in response to these particular girls as he has come to know and care about them. And again, his physical contact is perfect to be loving and supportive without inappropriate.

    • And we are back to my backstory theory that I shared earlier! After being thrown off the team, he saw/met/overheard some female hockey players in a park, they were beaten up by male players and then forced into marriages, and it made him realize Intersectionality. His religious minority anger needs to join with the feminism anger because they are both fighting the same evil.

  7. See, Tripathi is deeply evil because he’s deliberately disobeying the rules in order to prove a point and get what he wants. Abhimanyu doesn’t think he’s doing anything wrong by making Preety abandon her game for their wedding. Evil is more obvious when it’s a choice, but it could be worse when it feels like it isn’t.

  8. This is such a nice moment. One part of my brain says “of course they can’t have the girls beat the boys because it is unpatriotic”, but another part says “no, this is a lot better ending, surprising us with decency”

  9. Aliyah lifting up Bindiya’s stick is so on point for their characters. They have such a large cast, but these small moments showing their characters are brilliant.

  10. Don’t know why exactly, but India and Australia have a big sports rivalry. Australia’s racist, but it can’t just be that, because lots of places are racist.

      • Exactly! I don’t fully understand. They are closer so they can more easily play each other? And Australia is good in similar sports (also cares about Cricket), but it feels like it should be more than that.

  11. Confessing I don’t like the movie as much once they go to Australia. Except for a couple of scenes – locker room scenes with Bindiya and the confrontation between Preety and Komal.

    • I love just the fact that Balbir is included in this movie. The “girls” aren’t just about sportsmanship and practice and talent, there’s also pure anger and strength.

  12. Shah Rukh says they thought the movie was no good, and then it was a smash hit. Do you think he has amped up that story for drama, or did they really think it was a stinker? If they did, I wonder why. The characterization, writing, and plot are so good, and well executed. Just the music is a bit iffy. 🙂

    • Maybe he meant “no good” in the sense that it wouldn’t resonate with the masses cuz it’s not escapist enough. It hits on a lot of relevant ideas

    • I think he amped up the story a bit. They probably thought it was going to be a low budget unnoticed thing, and then it was a hit. Clearly they spent almost nothing on the budget.

    • It is really all about the girls relationships with each other, and SRK is the glue, but not the driver. It isn’t a typical hit.

    • The camera work is also great, if you notice the framing of the shots and how they use a different visual vocabulary for different characters.
