Happy Saturday! I got my coffee, I got my whipped cream on top, I got my dark chocolate mix added into the coffee, and I’ve got my bacon jerky. Let’s do this!!!
Chak De! It’s on Amazon, and also einthusan, and also your DVD shelf probably. Oh and remember, once we finish watching it we will need to give opinions on which team member is most attractive in a ladies-who-like-ladies kind of way. So head back to This Post for that!!!
I’ll put up a “And PLAY” comment at 7:30am and we will go straight along commenting from then on.
Procrastinatrix’s theory of sexual tension between these two, what do we think?

BTW, this theory is really for fun, not deeply held. Kabir is just too decent to ever act on any attraction even if he feels any. ❤

Also, I JUST now put it together that the reason Bindiya so so incredibly difficult is because she is a rape survivor. The movie knows it, this scene is supposed to make us understand it. Why she resists trusting anyone, why she goes on the offensive immediately, and so on. Maybe even why Shahrukh cuts her a little slack, because he sees it too.

Hmm that makes sense to me.

Are you getting that just from this scene? I wouldn’t have thought that

Because she says “I know how things work”. Meaning, she has been forced to sleep with a coach before.
LikeLike
Could be. There’s a lot of pressure on school aged girls to trade sex for favors though. That’s harmful even with out physical assault.
LikeLike
Yeah, if it was a previous coach telling her she had to sleep with him or was off the team, I am calling that rape. And that’s what it feels like from her attitude here.
LikeLiked by 1 person
I agree with you that sex under those circumstances is rape. I’m just saying these attitudes do deep harm even if there isn’t physical contact, just constant coercion, comments, and hints. But yeah, she could be a rape survivor.

Ok how did he zip it up without even looking? That’s some skill!

The only way I can find logic is if the zipper didn’t actually come out of the little hook at the bottom of her jacket. So he could just feel for the zipper and pull it up.

I always assumed she just unzipped halfway.

By the way, from what I have learned in movies and I think is maybe true in real life, the female athletes in India really do have a big problem with rape from superiors. You have to be “nice” to get the good promotions and positions in the government sports program. Another reason it is so awesome that Shahrukh is coaching the girls here. They are used to people who either don’t care at all, or are only in it for sex.

The varsity team did. In PE it was just gym suits. Ugly gym suits. But this was the pre-mini skirt 60s, so wearing short skirts was a kind of a privilege just for female athletes.

Song lyrics and translation. Someone on DCIB said that it is an unrequited love song, and it is:
eeja Tera Rang Tha Main Toh… (x2)
I was Your third color
(The national flag of India, sometime also known as Indian tri-color has three colors in it, saffron,
white and green, top to bottom. Shah Rukh Khan is portraying a Muslim character in the movie and
as green is also the color of Islam, he is referring himself to that green color)
Jiya Tere Dhang Se Main Toh
I lived my life in Your ways (according to Your traditions)
Tu Hi Tha Maula, Tu Hi Aan
You are my God, You are my pride (Calling out to his country)
Maula Mere Le Le Meri Jaan… (x2)
Oh God (my country)! My life is Yours to take
Teeja Tera Rang Tha Main Toh… (x2)
I was Your third color
Jiya Tere Dhang Se Main Toh
I lived my life in Your ways
Tu Hi Tha Maula, Tu Hi Aan
You are my God, You are my pride
Maula Mere Le Le Meri Jaan… (x2)
Oh God! My life is Yours to take
Tere Sang Kheli Holi, Tere Sang Thi Diwali
I played Holi with You, and I also celebrated Diwali/Deepawali with You
(Holi-Festival of colours; Diwali-Festival of lights)
Tere Anganon Ki Chhaya, Tere Sang Sawan Aaya
Your courtyard provided shade to me, You also brought the rains
Pher Le Tu Chahe Nazaren Chahe Chura Le…
You may turn Your head away from me and not look into my eyes now
Laut Ke Tu Aayega Re, Shart Laga Le…
But You’ll come back, I’m betting on it
Teeja Tera Rang Tha Main Toh… (x2)
I was Your third color
Jiya Tere Dhang Se Main Toh
I lived my life in Your ways
Tu Hi Tha Maula, Tu Hi Aan
You are my God, You are my pride
Maula Mere Le Le Meri Jaan… (x2)
Oh God! My life is Yours to take
Mitti Meri Thi Boori
The land/soil I belong to is also brown
(I am also pure at heart)
Wohi Mere Ghee Aur Churi
I ate the same ghee and sweets (like my fellow countryman)
(Ghee is a fat produced from milk, richer than oil
which is used in India for cooking and or decorating food with richness)
Wohi Raanjhe Mere Wohi Heer
I believed in same Raanjha’s and Heer’s that lived in Your country
(Referring to Heer-Raanjha/Raanjhanaa, a famous romantic couple in Indian History,
similar to Romeo-Juliet)
Wohi Sevaiyyan Wohi Kheer
I ate the same Sevaiyaan and Kheer, which is a specialty of Your country
(Sevaiyyan is a sweet-dish made using vermicelli and Kheer is rice-pudding)
Tujh Se Hi Rooth Na Re Tujhe Hi Manana…
You’re the one who’s upset with me and You’re the one whom I have to appease
Tere Mera Naata Koi Dooja Na Jaana…
No one can understand the depth of our relationship
Teeja Tera Rang Tha Main Toh… (x2)
I was Your third color
Jiya Tere Dhang Se Main Toh
I lived my life in Your ways
Tu Hi Tha Maula, Tu Hi Aan
You are my God, You are my pride
Maula Mere Le Le Meri Jaan… (x4)
Oh God! My life is Yours to take

I love how he pulls out allll the emotional stops in this speech – hints that they’ll be throwing the game, points to how much they wanted to play for India, breaks out his own pain at coming in second – and still at the end Preety is like, whatever, I’m getting the most goals, don’t get in my way. The movie never lets him overpower the women.
