Friday WatchAlong: Ghungroo! 4pm Chicago Time (AN HOUR LATER THAN USUAL)

First, NOTE THE TIME CHANGE!!!! 4pm!!!!! I had a last minute chance to get together with a friend this afternoon and I couldn’t pass it up. So I moved watchalong an hour. If I run even longer than that (stuck in traffic, whatever), just wait for me to say “And PLAY”.

Ghungroo!!!! Shashi!!!! And period costumes! And Waheedaji!!!! And Smita Patil!!!! And it’s on einthusan.

At 4pm (or a little later if I am running late), I will put up an “And PLAY” comment. And then we play! And then we are happy!

  1. Does purposely drinking and driving count as suicide? If yes then am I allowed she just did it earlier, like their wedding night? Or is that too mean. They certainly didn’t turn her into a sympathetic character.

  2. OMG OMG OMG!!!!! Poonam Sinha!!!! Shatrugan’s actual wife!!! Why does this movie have sooo many Shatrugan references???!!!!

  3. I love how the characters get “updated” for the time jump. Shashi ascends to his ideal form (greying temples). Meanwhile, Waheeda has to wear glasses now.

  4. This is weirding me out. IMDB says Renu is Poonam Sinha! But I recently watched Aadmi aur Insaan and in it she looks so much more like Sonakshi Sinha and she doesn’t look like it here.

  5. I’m a little lost here, and it isn’t covered in the one paragraph plot summary I’ve read. The prince is flirting with Shashi’s daughter at college, right?

    • I feel like I saw another film recently where the lower-class girl taught the upper-class guy to eat sugar-cane??? Or possibly vice versa. But I’m not remembering what movie that was.

And agreed, fresh sugarcane is glorious!

        • Oh, that actually wasn’t what I was thinking of–I haven’t seen that movie since it came out–but the Rani connection jogged my memory! Isn’t there something like that in “Chalte Chalte,” not so extended but perhaps just action in the background of a song? And if I’m right, it is opposite in that case (rich girl, poor guy).

And I should definitely rewatch “Dil Bole” : D I remember liking it.

  6. I am going on the official DCIB record. IMDB is WRONG!!!! Renu is NOT Shatrugan Sinha’s wife and Sonakshi Sinha’s mother!!!

    • It doesn’t even have a Wikipedia page, so I’m guessing “not very.” I saw it on a pirated VHS back in the day (which, for me, means early aughts). It popped back into my head only recently, and I initially thought I had made it up because I could find so little info about it! But then I found this version on Einthusan, rewatched it for the first time in 10+ years, and discovered that I still quite liked it.

  7. And once again, as I see palace intrigue, I reminded what a terrible system of government it is! This was the lesson we taught my children with the movie The Lion King. Royalty is a terrible system of government!

  8. Okay, my dad has just gotten here and is demanding dinner. Since it is his birthday I should PROBABLY feed him. Have fun, everybody! I’m glad that my suggestion doesn’t seem to have disappointed you!
