Happy Sunday!!!! Our first Sunday watchalong in a while. In honor of Rachel’s birthday. And in honor of me FINALLY getting someone to watch Kabhi Alvida na Kehna with me.
It’s on youtube, it’s on googleplay, it’s on Netflix, and it’s probably on einthusan!!!! You have no reason not to watch it! Except for maybe that you don’t enjoy it! In which case you can watch it and hate on it! So, HA! Still no excuse!
At 10am Chicago time I will put up an “and PLAY” comment and we will keep going from there!
Shahrukh is such a PILL!!!!!

Abhishek and Rani are such good scene partners!!!! They are fighting and not getting along here, but doing it perfectly.

HOW IS THIS A 60S THEME??? It’s 20s, right? right?

I was just yelling that at the TV

It’s not even good for a 20s theme

To me, the feather boas are either 20s or 70s. But the Marilyn Monroe back up dancers could be 60s. I don’t know. This confuses me.

Abhishek is such a fantastic actor. He can be immature 90% of the time but the glimpses of maturity are so heartwarming.

He is so wonderful in this movie! I love him!

“Hehe I think I need a drink,” that Amitabh line read was so funny – “get out of here as fast as you can” underneath

And another great little scene in the middle of craziness! The bitter back and forth, Amitabh’s subtle observation, and then Rani and SRK bonding based on shared unhappiness at the party.

Yea, I think they used the same models from the fashion magazine for the party. SO MANY BLONDES!!!

I know a little baby desi boy who gets very excited and shouts “HAIR” every time he sees a blonde woman. It starts so young….

Somehow Amitabh’s hair is looking a lot like a wig in this scene. But of course, it isn’t a wig. I choose to believe.

This speech is so good and Abhishek’s reaction the whole time is perfect!

Why couldn’t this be Amitabh’s character straight through? Why do we need “Sexy Sam” instead of “Serious Sam”?

I know, right?!?! UGH! get rid of Sexy Sam and just give us this and a mature relationship with Kirron Kher.

I would even enjoy some delicate flirting on his side. No prostitute craziness, but lots of poetic compliments to young ladies.

Yes. The white prostitute bit is just gross. But I would be fine with the light flirting.

WHY IS SHAHRUKH’S SHIRT LIKE THAT????

The idea of Rani and SRK coming out of the station againa nd again to see their spouses, then their parents and suspect an affair, and then later being spotted themselves having an affair for real, is really good! Like, narrative foreshadowing, but also on some level showing that Rani and SRK are thinking about affairs. If only iit wasn’t handled so ridiculously!!!!

He doesn’t say “I want to sit down”, he says “I want to take the weight off”, right? All cool and poetical?

If I knew how to do it, I would create a Margaret Edit of this movie. Rani and SRK scenes, Kirron and Amitabh scenes, Rani and Abhishek, SRK and Preity, and NOTHING ELSE.

I love that Shahrukh is saying “no sex appeal” to Rani who has maybe the most raw sex appeal of any actress! Doesn’t matter what she wears or how she is styled or anything.

I am enjoying how both of them are getting really happy and silly together, but in a way that fits with the rest of their characters as established. He is a little mean, she is a little bossy.

So, Karan is doing an ‘In the mood for love’ parody with this scene? Because that is what it looks like to me.

I wish I would enjoy these “happy” scenes between Rani and SRK. But I just feel bad for the spouses. Also, it feels like everything is heightened and exciting because they know deep down it is illicit and wrong.

Beyond illicit and wrong, it’s also a vacation from real life. Right? No worries about cleaning, about finances, about childcare. Just have coffee and joke with each other. If you went on vacation with your spouse, maybe you would have just as much fun!
LikeLike
YES! It’s a vacation from real life. No responsibilities. Both are on their best behavior.

My secondhand embarrassment is SO STRONG with that Rani scene. This is why I prefer ADHM, no secondhand embarrassment and Ranbir gets an earful from Anushka A LOT in it, which is satisfying. This movie, nope.
LikeLiked by 1 person
Very good point! Maybe next time I’ll just watch ADHM until almost the end up skip the actual ending. Anushka gets better and still doesn’t romantically love Ranbir and he has to suck it up, be a big boy and DEAL WITH IT!

My favorite song! And the song that makes me think “even if they aren’t in love forever and ever, I think they both really really needed to have this affair in order to get the confidence to leave their toxic marriages”

Watch couples Therapy on prime ( you have to pay for Showtime), if SRK and Rani had gone to therapy their spouses they could have worked through it (possibly not Rani), but they didn’t try. The toxicity is in themselves.

Does anyone know the designer of SRK’s red and black readers and Amitabh’s red and black glasses? They look very Prada but I can’t tell. I wonder if they made a deal with Prada.

Is it true that Karan and Shah wanted Kajol to do this film but she wouldn’t bc it went against her beliefs
LikeLike
First half yes, second half no. She didn’t do it because she had a little baby. But they did want to cast her, specifically Karan wanted there to be a distinctive age gap between Abhishek and his wife, so the whole “you see me a child” thing would make more sense.
