Yaaaaaaaaaaaay! Friday WatchAlong! I did work all morning, ran an errand, then came home and had a nap, and now I am all settled in for this movie! And I will NOT fall asleep (as I tend to do when we have Friday afternoon watchalongs).
Chori Chori Chupke Chupke
It’s available all over the place for rent, and it is well worth the rental. It has one of my all time favorite songs, “No. 1 Punjabi!”
At 3pm Chicago time, I will put up an “And PLAY” comment on this post and we will all watch along together from there. I’m excited!
Where’s Rani for all this sequence, by the way? Did she leave town for some reason and I missed it?
LikeLike
Yeah to attend her cousin’s baby event.

Oh, wow. How is it that I had completely forgotten this masterpiece of a title song? O.O

This is the song where you notice Salman’s thinning hair the most.

Have we ever seen him with glasses outside of her fantasy? Or is it just her fantasy Salman with glasses?

She is literally seeing him with rose colored glasses!

This song is so lovely! And FINALLY, Preity has a voice that suits her face, like in the previous song

Wiki says that it is Alka Yagnik in both of them. I always think Alka is more successful at singing slightly “traditional” melodies like this, more so than pop-influenced stuff like Preity’s first song.

So tell us, Filmikudhi: have you been remembering to measure your belly with a tailor’s tape? I take it that’s a very important aspect of pregnancy.
LikeLike
Obviously! ;-). No.I have not. But the doctors use measure tape to measure your belly.

And studying the relevant scriptures, of course.

Just pointing out the way both Salman AND Rani get to listen to the belly. Kind of intimate

I’m sure most of you know this. But in Indian culture, elders are not supposed to touch younger people’s feet. And because Preity is a prostitute she feels she is especially “dirty” so someone elder of “class” should really not be touching her feet. So having an elder women of “higher class” massage her feet is a big deal for Preity.

Also, Salman and Rani’s excuse for staying in Switzerland was that Rani isn’t allowed to travel. But in the 8th month of pregnancy both can travel to India?!?!??!! No airline would allow you on the flight one month before you are due!!!!

The Pundit seems like an ASS! Two pregnant women can’t come to this ritual together?!

Not to mention the phone bills he must rack up for Salman, calling the house in Switzerland for very little reason.

Oh for F’s SAKE! Woman have three births: 1 When she is born, 2. When she is married, and 3. when she becomes a mother?!?!?!?!?!? I HATE THIS SO MUCH!

See, women are only defined by their relationship to men. That’s why doctors can’t talk to them directly.

P*sses me off as well. This family is so horrible! Can’t they see that NO ONE (Especially Rani) doesn’t like their talk

Also, what happened to the spunky Rani from the beginning of the movie? How the heck does she go from that to this?!?!?!?!? UGH!!!!

Patriarchy and expectations wears you down once the term “wife” is used, especially with this ass of a family

I feel like I can psychologically reconcile it in part by thinking she might want to “hedge her bets” by bringing as much blessing upon the baby as possible, having the trauma of the miscarriage still hurting her.

I am fine with that part. But I am not fine with how she goes from spunky to all of a sudden lying to her family and totally not being okay with considering adoption and insisting on the son having Salman’s blood. The whole bit drives me nuts!

I hope it’s a girl just to spite them, but seeing how misogynistic this movie already is I fear not

I really do wonder what those people would have done with a girl. “Oh don’t worry, that’s also why my friend with the four kids had so many. Sadly, only the youngest is a boy.” They’re progressive like that, they’ll keep a girl and even allow her to go to school.

Because Salman is a MAN. Men make all medical decisions.

To be fair, Rani made this decision.

And it did feel like a climax of the movie to me. So far, everything they’ve done for Preity, has been for the sake of the kid, or at least it could have been seen that way. It always felt to me like Rani has finally come to value Preity for her own sake.

I don’t think he offered her a house. He just offered her blank checks, which she “refused.” It’s easy to refuse money when you have been living in a mansion. Not so easy when you are hungry and homeless.

Thank you for this! I love seeing movies I have never watched before. It’s such a bittersweet ending that makes you wonder if Salman loved her *a bit more* than was appropriate for the situation. Sorry, his freeze-frame eyes just scream love loudly,

And there is that faint echo of “chori chori chupke chupke” over it, like maybe he has a tiny secret.

The title song, too. With even the hand gesture from a choreography that was only ever in her head before. I can acknowledge when a film is trying to show something different from what I’m seeing.

Thank you for the watch – a – long! childcare and movies don’t really go together, I missed quite a bit, and then I lost my second computer so I couldn’t comment. But I enjoyed the movie, even if I was Rani hating quite a bit at the end. Have a good weekend!
