Saturday WatchAlong: Dushmani! 8am! For JACKIE!!!

Happy Saturday! And Happy Jackie Birthday Week! I have been talked into doing an ACTUAL Jackie movie, not just one of his modern ones where he has a little father role and nothing else.

Dushmani! I know nothing about it! Except that it is Jackie and Sunny and from 1995. So I am expecting lots of fake blood, very little dancing, and some questionable sexual politics. WOOT! Oh, and for Jackie to show too much skin, because it’s what he does.

At 8am Chicago time, I will put up a comment on this post “And PLAY” and then we can all comment along together from there.

  2. So far, Sunny has been basically useless. Also, has anyone else seen Aap Mujhe Ache Lagne Lage? That is my favorite “hero in love with a gangsters daughter” movie. Partly because Hrithik is so straightforward about going after her.

  3. I can rationalize it as reflecting poorly on Anupam et al. for sheltering her so thoroughly rather than on Sunny for. . . presuming that she’s a vaguely normal girl, but her extremely childish bedroom makes this feel creepy.

  4. I just remember this movie had a lot of scenes straight out of Romeo and Juliet and so far I’m right. The window scene and the wedding meet cute scene are very much from Shakespeare. Many movies have the same story but it’s Shaker Kapur so he stole the scenes accurately.

  6. Still down a casting wormhole. The dancing lady was in the TV Mahbharat, playing Uttara, Arjun’s dance student during the year he was a woman who ended up being Abhimanyu’s widow.

  7. Sunny: 39, Manisha: 25, Jackie: 38, Anupam: 40, Deepti: 43. That’s going by release year of 1995, going by “mover poster in background” year, it’s all 4 years earlier than that.

      • Agreed. And I think she does best in these kinds of roles where she’s trying to hold things together/keep other people happy following some horrible tragedy. I just wish she’d DO more in this particular instance.

  8. Talking to somebody without actually seeing their face is never a good idea in a Hindi movie. Sometimes they’re secretly dying; other times, they’re Pran in an obviously fake rubber mask.
