Sunday WatchAlong: 11am Chicago Time! The Pirate! Available for Rent for a Small Price on All Major Streaming Services! Also, It’s Ridiculous

Yaaaaaaaaaaaay, an American musical! So glad I get to share this one with you. And it is good for y’all to see it, because this is one of many classic American musicals that influenced both Farah Khan and Prabhudeva in their work. For real, Farah even acknowledges this one in particular as one of her hidden tributes in “Dhoom Tana”.

The Pirate!

Judy and Gene Kelly movie, totally ridiculous plot and period setting, but it works because they are both so freakishly charming and talented.

At 11am Chicago time I will put up an “and PLAY” comment and then y’all can comment along with me from there.

  1. So, he is supposed to be in love with her for real-real, right? Like, we had the whole flirty song to establish he is a scoundral, and then he sees Judy and is obsessed.

  2. I love this crosstalk. You know Judy was Gene’s first Hollywood co-star? And they always had a special sort of comfort together.

  3. Her litttle smile when she said she loved someone else made the 10 year old explode in embarrassed laughter. And then he left the room…

    • Really? So, this is a Minelli picture, and one thing I heard somewhere about Minelli and Judy is that when you see her through his camera, you are seeing her literally through the eyes of love. This was 3 years into their marriage, pretty soon after Liza was born and she went back to work.

  4. The “horror? shame?” like he really can’t imagine why she wouldn’t be proud of her talent. That’s what I remembered most about this movie, that he is seducing her into being a successful performer because he can see she loves it.

  5. This should feel stalkery and creepy, but it doesn’t. Something about how they are both committing to overacting makes it not feel like he is scary or she is scared. Or is that just me?

  6. Okay they are great together- or the dialogue is great. I’m more of a Judy fan than Gene Kelly. But the arguement about wether or not he loves her – too good.

    • And the moment when he drops the over the top and says “you know, you don’t have to love me to be in the troup”. The combo of being in love, and also just really wanting her to be part of the act.

    • I wish they were in more movies together. There’s just this one, For Me and My Gal which goes weirdly dark, and Summer Stock where Judy is struggling with various issues and only shines through in spots.

    • There is a lot of chicken talk – It stands out in contrast to all the puff sleeves. Like people dressed like that shouldn’t know what a living chicken actually looks like.

  7. I only now put it together that he’s wearing pants and boots that are made of the same fabric, rather than being eaten alive by some monstrous hose or stirrup-pant situation.

    • I have also been puzzling on his pants. I am sure they are less Period and more Best Dance Pants. But what were Dance Pants in 1948? Nylons?

      • The fact that that high waist stays up when the front is so much higher than the back is really astonishing. IDK if you’ve seen the poster, but according to the artist the unique selling proposition of this film seems to have been Gene Kelly’s rear.

  8. Not sure if I want to be in Kelly’s troupe or don’t want it. Seems like he is very good at hunting out food and places to stay, but you might also be taking some wild risks.

  9. Kelly had this whole thing about choreographing great Art in the middle of his movies with big ballet numbers and stuff. I suppose it kept him happy, but when we were kids, these were always the bits when we went off to get popcorn from the kitchen.

  10. This shot, with him on the mast and swinging down, is the bit Farah did as an homage in the middle of Dhoom Tana. In her directors commentary, she says it’s for Gene Kelly. So we and Farah Khan have seen this movie! And very few other people.

  11. I don’t know who the mayor actor is, but I admire his sticktuitiveness for continuing to pronounce “Manuela” as a three-syllable-word in the faces of all these naysayers.

  12. Pedro just figured out he can get the actor killed instead of him! He is also a fun actor – the way his eyes twinkle.

  13. Walter Slezak is the Mayor/Real Moccoco. Legendary character actor of Hollywood, did roles like this that shaded into roles of sinister evil occasionally.

  14. Gene, also bring the Drama! You know he took a long time picking out his perfect Pirate outfit. They are perfect together.
