Sunday WatchAlong: JHMS! 8am Chicago Time! Come One, Come All!

Happy Sunday! I spent most of yesterday in bed, and today I may consider trying to do something productive, starting with watchalong!

Jab Harry Met Sejal!!! It’s lovely and we love it.

At 8am Chicago time, I will put up an “and PLAY” comment and we will all go from there.

  1. I notice that I THINK of them as Harry and Sejal, and rarely pop out to thinking of them as SRK and Anushka. They are both so good that they create alternative and REAL people that I believe are true.

  2. For how “traditional” this film is in structure, with the rich engaged girl and the lover coming to the wedding and all of that, it really is a HUGE deal that Sejal breaks the engagement on her own, not for Harry. I can’t think of another movie like this where that is the outcome. Marriag eis a given, either with the proper person or the lover, you can’t just stop the wedding because you don’t want to be married!

  3. Sejal absolutely came here in hope that Harry might come. I’m assuming she sent the wedding card to Mayank knowing he’d tell Harry the deets.

  4. Another thought, Harry is maybe the only person in the world who understands how Sejal struggles to please her family, how traumatized she is by being blamed for things. So he fully understands what a big deal it was for her to stand up to everyone and refuse to be married. she’s a lot stronger than he thought.

  5. This moving speech from Harry is Indian in it’s movingness. Because as an American this idea of void is not sexy or beautiful but almost crass. But I have heard the statement of a person filling a void in other Indian films so I accept it as cultural thing that I am not a part of.

    • honestly I really want the kiss, and yet is is hardly as hot as some of their other non-kiss scenes. The movie that you had us watch with Harsh that everyone loved except me had a MUCH BETTER kiss. I didn’t love the film but the kiss was great!

  6. Question that I can’t remember if we have discussed before, is it possible Sejal is on the spectrum? I’m thinking that particularly because Imtiaz followed this up with Love Aaj Kal 2 where the hero was definitely on the spectrum.

But it might explain some of her frustration with somehow never pleasing people and always doing the wrong thing, and her fearlessness in fighting through Harry’s boundaries because she doesn’t even see the line she is crossing.

    • I think it’s possible esp if she’s undiagnosed. Some of her speech patterns, movements, the fact that she may not understand certain social cues and fleeting eye contact? I can see it.

    • If it is a spectrum aren’t we all on it? A scale between points? I can say I love people like Sejal who are all heart but need words spoken to understand things. So honest. And lets face it, so many who are at the fully non-spoken understanding side of the spectrum still get muddled when it comes to the heart and family dynamics. There are very few people who truly understand themselves.

      • The thing with Autism or any kind of diagnosis like that is that it is different for different people. Some have clear signs, while others have smaller ones but are still affected by them in their day-to-day lives. It is NOT a scale, and those that are on the “normal” or Neurotypical side of it never get specifically targeted or bullied the same way a Neurodivergent person is. That person is either classified as odd or weird, but a neurotypical person never has to face the same stigmas or situations that a neurodivergent person faces. Largely, because of missing social cues, and it is not a kind of “just be yourself” story because if a neurodivergent person were to “be themselves” then the chance of them being ostracised or isolated is much greater. Sorry, very passionate about this.

        • In all honesty I have no interest in diagnosing people. I don’t really care if people are autistic or not. For people in my personal life it is useful to know if people are sensitive to certain situations, but as every Autistic person is different it seems to be more about the person than the diagnosis. While I do have people close to me who have gained so much more understanding from the world after getting an official diagnosis, I am bitter that the world refused to give them that understanding without an official diagnosis. So I suppose my reaction of us all being on the Spectrum is a reaction to that. I am bitter that this world will not accept people’s differences. In English the word spectrum means : used to classify something, or suggest that it can be classified, in terms of its position on a scale between two extreme or opposite points. I put Neurotypical at one point which is probably not what the official diagnosis means. That said, I don’t really believe there is one Neurotypical. Psychologically “typical” is a big can of worms. And when the medical runs into the psychological we start diagnosing our favorite movie characters.

But thank you for the book recomendation. It may come in handy depending on where my future leads.

  7. Mayank and Irina!!!! Totally random to see them there, but I am so happy at the idea that theya re celebrating Harry and Sejal’s wedding because Harry and Sejal celebrated theirs and it’s only fair.

  8. Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay! That was lovely! And it gave me the strength to tackle my kitchen. Goal for today, a temporary table work space, and finding a way to store my shelf stable food that isn’t plastic grocery bags on the floor. Eggs are good for a bit out of the fridge, right?

    • Yes to the eggs out of the fridge. In Berlin they were never refrigerated but weren’t washed before sale. I wouldn’t put an American bought egg in the sun though, but it is probably good out of a fridge for 24 hours. Good luck on your kitchen / so sorry about your kitchen! And thank you for the watch a long!

  9. After this watchalong I got another JHMS fanfic idea. Fic in Mumbai where Sejal goes to Marine Drive alone at evening/night, sits at the rocks, and remembers Harry screaming out her name in Portugal. She wants to call out for him but her throat is too clogged with tears to be loud enough 😭 I think that would be a nice ficlet.

  10. Margaret is this the third or fourth watch a long of JHMS on WordPress? The search engine and the various ways we label the movie (JHMS vs Jab Harry Met Sejal) make it hard for me to figure out. I want a post to link to ALL the JHMS posts – the reviews the scene by scenes & the watch-a-longs!

    • I usually follow the link at the end of any one of the posts (“Jab Harry Met Sejal” one) and go one by one from there. You get all the extra essays and fics too!

Oooh and I also click the “Film Review” button at the top of the blog, then press “Detailed Scene By Scene Reviews” and find JHMS’ from there. It has almost all the essays, scene-by-scene analyses and fics!
