Sunday WatchAlong: JHMS! 8am Chicago Time! Come One, Come All!

Happy Sunday! I spent most of yesterday in bed, and today I may consider trying to do something productive, starting with watchalong!

Jab Harry Met Sejal!!! It’s lovely and we love it.

At 8am Chicago time, I will put up an “and PLAY” comment and we will all go from there.

  1. I do believe Safar gives us some backstory about how Harry got to Canada coz the song mentions a drifting traveller from his village who was “a good man but just a little angry” 😭

    • Hey, at least we can confidently make it a cult classic here and try to convert everyone we know to the brilliance of this film, and if it does get the recognition it deserves later on, then we can just be satisfied in knowing that we were there first. Like Dil Se.

    • Prague is amazing, even more gorgeous than it appears in this film. I want to go to Portugal, but I feel like I’ve been to the Netherlands jus based on this film!

  2. Ok I love how Sejal’s name as a metaphor includes Harry not wanting to know its meaning yet it gets reinforced throughout the film. (It means “river water” or “pure flowing water”).

  3. I hate Anushka’s stupid child sleeping t-shirt and shorts, I hate that in these child-like clothes Harry’s lust first becomes apparent. I mean it makes sense, her body is exposed, and he lusts for the female body. He doesn’t even know her yet. But I just hate that t-shirt.

    • HA! I just said I like them. I am pretty sure I own lots and lots of similar pajamas even now. I hate LONG pangs. And I keep t-shirts until they are basically tattered because they become so soft!

  4. It’s not just that her trust is cleansing, it gives him a different kind of test. He is alone, in a hotel room, with the door closed, and he is discovering that he won’t do anything wrong in that situation. He can trust himself.

  5. I wonder if the indemnity bond scene did what it needed to do in that it revealed to Harry how incredibly innocent she is? Which gave her a better protection than any paper would be? The scenes before this, she could have been an experienced woman who would enjoy a flirtation, all he knew was that she was a brat and angry. But this scene says “yeah, nothing is going to happen” and he is all relaxed afterwards.

  7. Ok thing that struck me – she speaks about Rupen’s family holding this ring thing against her for the rest of their married life. Just in case we don’t get how terrible her future with him would be if she went along.

    • I take it as a sign that she isn’t quite as clueless as she appears. Sure she is loud and bossy, but she does understand how people work. And she doesn’t want to be treated badly. She has a strong sense of self worth. Exactly what Harry doesn’t have.

  8. I like how Harry is already on her side against Rupen, including that “why isn’t he here with you?” line. Feels partly that he is in love, but also that he is just a decent person and this is a wrong way to treat her, no matter how irritating he is finding her.

    • The fact that no one got off the plane with her is a sure sign that she isn’t valued by her family. I may not think Amersterdam is dangerous, but I wouldn’t leave a family member alone who has NEVER been alone in a foreign city before.
