It’s hot, the week isn’t over yet, and I am trying to avoid starting Sacred Games (it’s just SO BIG. I’m hoping if I carry it around with me everywhere, I can read it by osmosis). So, let’s have a totally frivolous and silly discussion!
What are the things that, if you see them in a trailer or poster, make you go “oh yeah, I’d see the movie just for that”?
For instance, John Abraham in a police uniform
(It’s not just me, Desi Boyz had to bend over backwards to get here, they must have known it was a selling poit)
Shahrukh in a suit
Dulquer in a lungi
Nivin Pauly with a beard
Vidya Balan smiling
Madhuri dancing
Anupam Kher in a bad wig
Arjun Rampal, just existing
Kunal Kapoor, ditto
And they know this about us! The evil producers who pull our strings! That’s why Karan stuck this song at the beginning of Kaal, completely unrelated to the rest of the film, just so he would sucker is in to by tickets with a sexy SRK song.
How about you? What are your “yep, that alone is enough for the price of the ticket” things?
John Abraham in a police uniform!! I can watch Dostana and Desi Boys umpteen times to just ogle at him.

It really feels like they must know that about the audience, there isn’t even a reason for him to be in uniform in Desi Boyz or Satyamev Jayete, they had to invent something. Like, really, the women of London want their male strippers dressed in Indian style police uniforms? And in Satyamev, he just HAS to go in disguise as a police office?

OK funny story about Dostana. So I went to watch that with my mum and we could only get back hall seats at The Ritz, Shimla (it is so “out of a hill station fantasy film” even today!) and the crowd was mostly college kids. So the opening sequence comes on and Jon’s bum’s intro is on the screen and I’m like hiding my face because I couldn’t believe I brought my mom to “such a film” and I just sort of side glace at my mom to see if she is mad but she’s sitting there with her jaw hitting the floor and hand with popcorn suspended just beneath it!!!!
I missed the rest of Jon’s bum’s intro because I couldn’t believe I caught my sanskari-Guddi-Mili-Jaya Bhaduri-inspired mom ogling at Jon Abraham’s bum!!!
I still tease her about it and she go “chup raho!!” LOL

Love this story so much :). I had a similar reaction when my mom cracked up at a Kevin Hart comedy routine we were watching on TV. She was always so proper, I couldn’t believe she even understood the jokes, let alone found them hilarious.

That was SRK in jean, un-tucked shirt and a blazer. Would post some pix of him in ethnic suits and western style suits but don’t know how.

I should say “SRK in blazer and tie”. It certainly got me to go see JHMS first day first show!!!!
How about you, what is the version of SRK that makes you go “yeah, I definitely want to see that movie!”?

A living version. What can I say, I’ve got it bad.
Otherwise, what kind of trailers make me want to see movies. Hmm–actors I like, some hint of the storyline and tone, but not so much that it feels like they just told you the whole movie, an appropriate musical track, doesn’t matter the genre, but it has to suit the visuals, tone, etc.
Are trailers for movies based on beloved books different in terms of making you want to go see them? I think it might be a bit different for me. At first I was discouraged by the trailers for Wrinkle in Time because the three Mrs.’s did not look at ALL like they did in my head. But once I relaxed into Ava’s vision I was SO STOKED by them.

I have a really hard time with book trailers. The movie is never going to be the same as the book, and that’s fine so long as it is a good thing on its own, but too often the book trailers focus on “remember what you loved about the book? Now watch it on the big screen!” which is an argument that just does nothing for me. I have the book already, I want to see how the movie is different from it.
Joe Wright’s Pride and Prejudice turned out to be a movie I loved, once I relaxed and appreciated it as a movie that took a basic story and turned it into something totally different and much more cinematic.
Ooo, is this all an excuse not to read Sacred Games? I think it might be! I can legitimately say “I want to appreciate the miniseries as it’s own thing, and therefore I have chosen to go in fresh”.

I absolutely think it’s possible to love a movie/series first and then love the book after, as its own thing. Live dangerously!

I don’t know, it still feels wrong! But on the other hand, Sacred Games is a seriously doorstopper of a book. I read fast and I like to read, I could knock it out in a weekend if I didn’t do anything else. But I like doing other things! I was going to do laundry this weekend. Walk the dog. Maybe go to church. Book, why do you taunt me so!!!!

Let’s meet sometime so I can show you how. I’d love to see which photos of SRK are your favorites (besides the ones with you)! 🙂
Half the time photos I try to share post as links instead of embedded photos, but I figure people can click on the link if they want to see them, and skip if if they don’t.

Aamir = My auto-watch
Same for Silver Fox Anil.
Kangana being completely insane or the other extreme, Kangana being sanskari af and then going completely crazy.
Rishi is my negative watch, as in a hard pass unless he’s with Dimple in which case yes please.

It didn’t strike me until just now reading this comment, but Rishi and Dimple co-starred in Luck By Chance too, didn’t they? Why did I not notice that before? Anyway, your rule holds! Even as friendly antagonists or whatever we would call them in that, they still had something special.
And if Silver Fox Anil is your Must Watch, that means I am just going to keep nagging you about Dil Dhadakne Do.

The trailers these days is so long that it feels never ending. The entire plot is given away with long monologues, never ending fights& mandatory love scenes. There’s a trailer template that most follows.
I liked the below teaser-short, crisp, dialogues enough to setup the tension without giving the whole plot away, good visuals, terrific background music(bgm kinda syncs with the punches & kicks)& silver fox Vikram. This is enough for me. Please don’t release a lengthy trailer.

That movies looks AMAZING!!!!! How did I not know Gautham Menon had actually finished a film?
And agree about the trailer, I still think Darr is the best trailer ever, because Adi threw out the rule book and just gave you the mood of the film without any details.

Woohoo Juhi.. How hot is she! Its still a little too long for my liking. You know which movie never had a teaser or trailer before release? Premam. Two songs from the first phase(least interesting)were released & that’s it. So imagine the surprise we got on seeing the bearded Nivin, Malar & all the other interesting stuff on big screen. I thought that was an insanely over confident move but one that paid off.

For a trailer to catch my eye it’s got to have Rajkummar, Irrfan, Richa, Swara or Nawaz in it.
Nivin’s beard and DQ’s lungi, well, I don’t need a trailer to get excited about those.
Also, SRK doesn’t need a trailer to sell his films (EVEN TODAY!) You like his films or don’t like his films based on word of mouth (EVEN TODAY)
