Watch Student of the Year With Me Here in 30 Minutes!

Woo-hoo! In 30 minutes, 3pm Chicago time, I will start commenting on this post as I watch the film and you can comment along with me.

Reminder! SOTY is only available on the ErosNow Prime channel, which is HORRIBLE. Instead of subscribing to it (faulty subtitles, movies that don’t play, really not worth it), you can just rent the movie on youtube from the link below for $2.99. Or on googleplay, same price.

See you all right here in half an hour!

  1. Apparently I can’t tell the difference between Varun’s six pack and Sids, I was just telling my son the man coming out of the water was Sid, but then they showed his face and I was wrong.

  2. In a movie with more time for Alia, they would have dug into the “child of divorce who resists breaking up with her first boyfriend” conflict. But no time for that! We need more young men in speedos!

  3. I watched the Radha music video on YouTube before I watched the movie, and that’s what got me interested in watching the movie in full. It’s still my favorite song from the soundtrack.
Also Sid in blue, my God.

    • THERE ARE SUPPOSED TO BE BUTTONS! I find it hilarious, it’s a normal formal suit thing, they just didn’t put in any buttons.

  4. also, this is when Karan and SRK had their “coolness”, at one point it was rumored that he would cameo in this film and then it didn’t happen because of “coolness”. But I am POSITIVE it was supposed to be in this song, probably the bit Rishi ends up doing.

    • I think I had watched DDLJ a few days before this, so when Kajol showed up I freaked out. If SRK had too, not much would have made this movie any better.

  5. So when I said I watched the first ten minutes with my students, they had been asking me for months and I outright refused to watch it because of this scene. I only gave in because I knew we wouldn’t get to this part.

  6. Okay, these shirts actually have buttons, they are just choosing not to utilize them. TI’s so weird! Who dresses liek this?

  7. Alright, but what about Sid, Varun, and Alia all ending up in a triad/throuple situation? Then we get the best of both worlds!

  8. I think I also watched the wedding scene before I watched the movie in full and was just amazed at the skill of the direction and acting that they could convey so much, I was easily able to pick up on dynamics, situations, and feelings without any dialogue whatsoever. Karan, Sid, Varun, and Alia all deserve so much credit just for this one scene.

    • Yes! Karan doesn’t get enough credit in general for how he edits and moves the camera and characters to tell the story. It’s not arty or classy, it’s all for relationship dramas, but it is also SUPER HARD and Karan is very good at it.

    • YES!!!! Better version of this movie, all the love triangle agony, and then in the present day reunion they finally admit that the True Love was Shruti and Shanaya and Sid and Varun all along.

    • So I’m getting the sense now that we just need to do a full rewrite of this movie where by the end, Sid and Varun are a couple and so are Alia and Shruti

      • Yes, totally. Or else Shruti and Little Anjali, Little Anjali’s whole “men are for advancement and sexuality is to ensnare them” could be fun to flip to a “wait, with girls I actual ENJOY sex!” thing

  9. The reason why I didn’t like this movie as much apart from the adult portions: The competition and toxicity of it from my International school days which was very American-based and wasn’t good at all and this reminded me why I hated it there apart from all other reasons

  10. Random story, when we were touring Harvard for my sister, the student guide lady was wearing a super short skirt like that and couldn’t sit, and I thought “how good can Harvard be if the girls are too dumb to buy clothes?”

So, Shanaya is totally ready for the Ivy League.
