Sunday WatchAlong: JHMS! 8am Chicago Time! Come One, Come All!

Happy Sunday! I spent most of yesterday in bed, and today I may consider trying to do something productive, starting with watchalong!

Jab Harry Met Sejal!!! It’s lovely and we love it.

At 8am Chicago time, I will put up an “and PLAY” comment and we will all go from there.

      • Basically my theory is that he believes he doesn’t deserve good things happening to him, so he both assumes he will lose Sejal, or he will place himself in a position where he loses her even though she WANTS to be with him later on.

        • So Hawayein has the speaker assume that this will not happen, that he’s already going to lose her. I mean, at this point he’s right in thinking so, but he still believes that until almost towards the end.

          • He also doesn’t really make a move to make that NOT true. For example, following HAwayein with immediately insulting her and pushing her away, instead of letting it play out.

  1. I do feel they stretched the “challenging” part a bit too much. Coz this scene is important with its connections to the fight but it also sounds clunky towards the end.

  2. I just caught that he says “10 days” when he first sees Klara. I wonder if she was the proto-Sejal? Pursued him, was strong and confident, and they had a 10 day magical romance. But she wasn’t Sejal so ultimately she put her anger above Harry’s trauma and punished him.

      • I think she is trying too hard to convince herself that she doesn’t have feelings. This is where I remember Anushka’s dialogue from Baadn Baaja Baarat when she makes “I made a plan with my head but the heart didn’t listen to the head.”

  3. Normally I don’t like the “gorgeous woman, less gorgeous man” trope, but I have total faith in Irina and Mayank. He’s Mayank!!! He’s the sweetest man in the world! Who wouldn’t want to marry him?

  4. Gas really shouldn’t have had his guys trail Nasty like that coz that’s why Harry was threatening them. Harry and Sejal were brought right back mentally to the Russian mafia situation.

  5. Also Portugal is unique in the river symbolism in this movie because it is situated between a river and the Altanic Ocean. And both the massage scene and the screaming of Sejal scene take place near the ocean.

  6. I actually love the Gaz-Harry scene so much. There is this solidarity that comes from a tacit recognition that they’re both immigrants with names they shortened.

  7. Ah, Sejal finally admitting her feelings will outlast this trip, by referring to Harry as her queen sized bed. Which is a very odd reference in English, but I appreciate it’s emotional weight.

  8. This is the point where it starts to feel super frustrating that they aren’t just telling each other how they feel! But maybe that’s why the cafe scene I hate is important? If Sejal says “I don’t want to leave”, she is ready for Harry to tell her to go home again. And if Harry asks her to stay, he’s ready for her to be “practical” again and mention Rupen.

      • I don’t know, she intended to create or recreate the separation of their worlds as she was starting to feel feelings she didn’t understand. But now she is understanding the feelings more and wishes that separation of worlds didn’t exist. It isn’t that she didn’t intend the impact, it is that now her wishes, her practicality, is changing.
