Happy Sunday! I spent most of yesterday in bed, and today I may consider trying to do something productive, starting with watchalong!
Jab Harry Met Sejal!!! It’s lovely and we love it.

At 8am Chicago time, I will put up an “and PLAY” comment and we will all go from there.
How to woo a woman in five minutes or less…a lesson by Shah Rukh Khan in the song Hawayein

I love the way they have filmed this song with high shots, almost like someone is watching into a couple’s very intimate scene.

I feel the same way when I watch this. Like I am watching something I should not be privy to.

Also Hawayein is super romantic but also super self-sabotaging…in short, a very Harry song.

Explain the self-sabotaging?

Basically my theory is that he believes he doesn’t deserve good things happening to him, so he both assumes he will lose Sejal, or he will place himself in a position where he loses her even though she WANTS to be with him later on.
LikeLiked by 1 person
So Hawayein has the speaker assume that this will not happen, that he’s already going to lose her. I mean, at this point he’s right in thinking so, but he still believes that until almost towards the end.
LikeLike
He also doesn’t really make a move to make that NOT true. For example, following HAwayein with immediately insulting her and pushing her away, instead of letting it play out.

And Sejal’s hair is back to being darker again.

Are you sure it isn’t just the light? When the sun is full shining on it it looks lighter, but in shadow darker? I’ll have to rewatch for hair color later.

Hmmm that makes sense to me also.

Sejal deflects her emotions with awkward joke and bravado. I can understand that very well!

And remember she has never actually felt desire before? She doesn’t have a frame of reference for what is going on.

I do feel they stretched the “challenging” part a bit too much. Coz this scene is important with its connections to the fight but it also sounds clunky towards the end.

Hair shadowing and costume shadowing with Sejal having curlier hair in this disco karaoke scene and dancing in yellow (though to be fair seems to be her fav color going by the Hawayein shirt)

It is cute, and so DIFFERENT from Klara’s proper sophisticated dress. She looks like a fashionable college kid. Which is a step up from the baby pajamas.

I just caught that he says “10 days” when he first sees Klara. I wonder if she was the proto-Sejal? Pursued him, was strong and confident, and they had a 10 day magical romance. But she wasn’t Sejal so ultimately she put her anger above Harry’s trauma and punished him.

Actually is that a script writing error -because then it that they were together for two years?
LikeLiked by 1 person
Maybe they had 10 amazing days and Klara hung on like death for 2 years? Versus Sejal who just lets him go and has faith he will come back?

Harry is so fallen off the ledge of love, and there is no going back now. The man is whipped!

Both Sejal and Harry are good at bluffing their way out of situations to save each other.

yes, but she at least now knows that SHE has feelings. She just assumes they will dissappear when she goes away.

I think she is trying too hard to convince herself that she doesn’t have feelings. This is where I remember Anushka’s dialogue from Baadn Baaja Baarat when she makes “I made a plan with my head but the heart didn’t listen to the head.”

My favourite thing to do with this film nowadays is to stop it, play the deleted scene where it was supposed to be situated and then go back to Netflix to turn on the film again 😍

Also Portugal is unique in the river symbolism in this movie because it is situated between a river and the Altanic Ocean. And both the massage scene and the screaming of Sejal scene take place near the ocean.

Also because a common romantic motif in Hindi film is the joining of the river to the sea, ie. Sangam. It’s supposed to symbolise a romantic union. Eg. Parineeta’s “Piya Bole” has a whole verse where the heroine speaks of a river racing to meet the sea that was her lover.

Ah, Sejal finally admitting her feelings will outlast this trip, by referring to Harry as her queen sized bed. Which is a very odd reference in English, but I appreciate it’s emotional weight.

“We had a wrong image of Gaz”…IMO Gaz exists to symbolise Harry’s own wrong self image.

This is the point where it starts to feel super frustrating that they aren’t just telling each other how they feel! But maybe that’s why the cafe scene I hate is important? If Sejal says “I don’t want to leave”, she is ready for Harry to tell her to go home again. And if Harry asks her to stay, he’s ready for her to be “practical” again and mention Rupen.
LikeLiked by 2 people
Very much. The “won’t leave fiance for tour guide” comment creates an impact on Harry that Sejal totally didn’t originally intend.
LikeLiked by 2 people
I don’t know, she intended to create or recreate the separation of their worlds as she was starting to feel feelings she didn’t understand. But now she is understanding the feelings more and wishes that separation of worlds didn’t exist. It isn’t that she didn’t intend the impact, it is that now her wishes, her practicality, is changing.

It’s too scary, so they both are saying it in different ways. Also, I don’t think Sejal at least fully understands what she feels.
