  1. Goodness, I can’t vote in most of your categories. I realized that actually I watch very few Hindi films. I agree that the Anushka-Virat wedding was one of the nicest social events of the year (It can’t be “gossip” if it’s true, can it?). I liked it because they actually managed to keep it a secret, despite the intense media scrutiny that both members of the couple face; because they actually did get married, despite all the constant rumors/ill wises that they are breaking up; because they had their private wedding, but also held public receptions, to satisfy their fans and make them feel a part of it, too; and because overall they both just look really happy.

For “best film”, I haven’t seen most of the ones on your list (intentionally). Nowadays I am very choosy about which films I will bother to go out to the theater for, based on reviews, trailers, information about story, etc., and who’s in it or behind the scenes. So actually I’ve only seen three of the films on your list, though I have marked down a few others to catch later on dvd. The three I saw were (chronologically) Newton, Toilet EPK, and Tiger Zinda Hai. If I had to rank these, they would rank about equally, in terms of succeeding in what they set out to do. I think, though, that I will give the edge to TEPK, for tackling a very difficult subject in a sensitive but accurate manner, managing to create an entertaining film around it. I think it had the most difficult job to pull off, and did so in a very creditable manner. But if I were to name the Hindi film that I thought was “best” of all the ones I saw, I would give it to Mukti Bhavan.

(BTW, why did you not list Lipstick Under the Burkha? It was released in India, and did reasonably well, similar to Newton.)

    Like

    • I was trying to keep it to more mainstream rather than art films and I couldn’t decide if Lipstick qualified or not. Newton I decided did because it got good box office, like it made it to the top of the list, but Lipstick I wasn’t so sure.

And thank you for voting! First one! Starting the conversation.

  2. I have a long list with movies of 2017 that I … didn’t have watched yet. Two of 2017 I have watched in a German/Swiss theatre, one I’ve watched online. In addition I am terribly biaised. The most honest vote I can give is about the character as I simply know that whatever 2017er movie I would watch in the future, my favourite character would always be Harry 🙂 And I also vote for the song you chose from JabHarryMetSejal.

Best film of 2017 – Shubh Mangal Saavdhan

    • Interesting! Bareilly Ki Barfi stood out for me because it was a good movie and also it ran for sooooooooooooo long. Sounds like it sticks in your mind as well, a good sign for it becoming more of a cult classic.

        • Rajkumar was amazing. Although Kriti was good too. I think in terms of performances/characters that stayed with me from that film, I might put Rajkumar first, then Kriti, then Ayushmann. Ayushmann was good, but the other two characters/performances were better.

  5. Most Disappointing (to you) After a Big Build Up Film of 2017
By big build up do you mean, huge promotions or building up the movie? In case of the former it would be Jab Harry Met Sejal.I kept waiting for Anushka to have a secret motive for sticking to Shahrukh. I thought the ring was just an excuse. But meh, it was really the ring all the time. Now if you mean a big build up in terms of the script/movie itself, Bhoomi let me down at the end after building it up nicely. The director decided to go with the typical masala route by making Sanjay Dutt beat up all the villains all by himself.

Best Character of 2017- Pritam Vidrohi from Bareilly ki Barfi. Just the name ‘Vidrohi’ will leave you cackling.
The Best Film of 2017 – Shubh Mangal Savadhan
Your Favorite Film of 2017-Bareilly ki Barfi and Newton. Both of them were awesome in their own way.
    Best Soundtrack of 2017- Raees
Your Least Favorite Film of 2017-Judwaa.I found it offensive on so many levels.Slapping women’s butts is not ok. I liked what Ratna Pathak had to say on the subject on the Women’s Roundtable by Rajeev Masand. The script was threadbare.Varun did not convince me that he was playing two different characters. For that case, Arjun was not convincing in Mubarakan despite doing such a good job playing twins in Aurangzeb.

A crime drama which gives an arc on all the four characters instead of glorifying the hero alone is novel.Well, Jacky,Nana Patekar and Kumar Gaurav gets their arcs while poor Javed Jaffrey’s character doesn’t get to do much growing up.And Jacky Shroff the leader of the Gang is the insecure one.

I hated the trailers and didn’t want to watch it, but thanks to your good word of mouth, I decided to give it a chance and I’m happy, because it was good entertaining movie. After all bad reviews I thought it will be terrible, but it’s not.

  7. Ok, this should teach me to be more proactive about watching newer Hindi films, so I can vote in these posts. My favorite Hindi film of 2017 is Raees, because it is the only 2017 film I saw in 2017. By the same logic it is my least favorite 2017 film.

Happiest gossip: Virushka! Karan’s twins were happy but with the wedding we get to look at pretty clothes. And what Katrina was wearing.

Death: Shashi. I’m Puri arguably sadder since he was young, but Shashi is the end of an era.

I’m having trouble picking a fave. Of Aamir’s films, Talaash and Rang De Basanti. Of Salman’s films, Ek Tha Tiger and Bajrangi Bhaijaan. Of Shahrukh movies, Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi. Non-Khan movies, Queen and Kahaani.

        • Oh I so agree with you Asmita..After Baahubali, nothing stood up.As a movie watcher,I am hoping to be amazed/entertained by the cinematic experience, actors’performances and does not really care which language/industry it comes from.Baahubali won hands down in that. There are also so many regional films that I loved(Vikram Vedha,Thondimuthalum Driksakshiyum,Fidaa,Arjun Reddy) this year that the Hindi films seem lagging behind by a mile.I am curious to know why you had the idea of listing the favorites in Hindi films only.
Funny that in all the Tamil,Hindi,Malayalam and even Telugu polls for favorites of 2017,the disclaimers sound similar- ‘Not considering Baahubali or ”we live in a non-Baahubali world’ or ‘Baahubali is an exception,so not including it’.
Certainly happy about Virushka.Fairytales are needed every now and then.

          Liked by 1 person

          • I’m totally heartbroken that Margaret would not include Bahubali because it’s better than everything else. Heck, nothing else should have been mentioned apart from it!! OK maybe Lipstick, Anarkali, Trapped, Bareilly etc should have been mentioned but everything from the mainstream actors in the Hindi industry at least doesn’t deserve to be remembered.

            Like

          • But that would be so BORING!!!!!! Just a string of Bahubali posts. We can take it as a given that it is on another level, and then discuss everything else down on the other level.

          • You didn’t even mention it dude!!!

If an epoch making film arrives, you give it it’s due. The mediocre films will still be there for the next year’s list and the next and so on. But we will only get one Bahubali 2 in this lifetime!! It deserves to sweep all your awards categories!!

Speaking of, maybe you could have done like a proper poll lasting all of December and winners could be sent a little commemorative DCIB trophy and email. Like seriously!

            Like

      • I assumed, like Box Office India, Margaret was only looking at “outright Hindi films.” 🙂

Now may I be heretical enough to say I didn’t like Bahubali 2 as much as I’d expected to. So perhaps that can be my “most disappointing film after a big build up.”

And I didn’t even notice the category for the non-2017 film first seen in 2017. I’m trying hard to remember which ones they might have been. I know I checked out some dvd’s from the library, but did I actually finish any of them? H’mm. I’ll try to recall. Similarly, there were lots of films on Youtube that I started but didn’t finish. 😦

Filmi Gossip News Story of 2017 That Was Most Happy-Making

    Virushka wedding
I’m a fan of this couple. Both seem intellectual, talented, passionate, dedicated. And equal levels of attractiveness. .. i like when celebrity couples match this way.

    Karan babies
After all the difficulties of being a gay man in a homophobic world, I’m glad that this open-hearted articulate passionate savvy man (who i consider to be the Fourth Khan of bollywood in terms of power, savvy, influence) gets to have his family, his bliss.

    Biggest Filmi Death of 2017

I’ll abstain. It seems macabre and in poor taste to vote on recent deaths. It’s like when people clap harder for some deaths than others during the In Memorium section of the Academy Awards.

Most Disappointing (to you) After a Big Build Up Film of 2017

    Rangoon
I really really, really, rreally, wanted to like this movie. I love the director, cinematographer, all the actors, period war dramas, and period films about the film industry. I was really rooting for them to make a great film. But with this film, VBhardwaj proves that he has absolutely no clue how to write and develop an original screenplay or how to even tell a story. But he’s still great with adapted screenplays, like the Shakespeare movies.

Most Surprisingly Good (to you) After No Build Up Film of 2017

    A Death in the Gunj
An almost perfect movie. Evocative acting, sure-handed direction and storytelling, wonderful ’70s period costumes and set design. Vikrant Massey and his soulful eyes are the year’s best find!

    Best Soundtrack of 2017

I haven’t listened to much bolly music this year. I’m still addicted to ADHM music lol. As for music/songs matching & enhancing the scenes in the movie, I’ll give it to JHMS.

    Best Characters of 2017

Shutu, Vikrant Massey, A Death in the Gunj

    Harry, SRK, JHMS

    Sejal, Anushka Sharma, JHMS

    Najma, Meher Vij, Secret Superstar

    Insiya, Zaira Wassim, Secret Superstar

Well drawn, multi layered, complex characters masterfully portrayed by the actors.

    Honorable mention

Pritam, Rajkumar Rao, Bareily ki Barfi
Changing characters literally while uttering a single sentence showed masterful acting chops, almost stunt-acting. I couldn’t believe my eyes.

Seema Pawar, every mother character she’s played this year!

    Best film

    A Death in the Gunj
Hand down. I watched it thrice in the theaters, taking different friends with me each time. Everyone was impressed, bar none.

    Favorite films

    JHMS
Sophisticated romance and self discovery movie with 2 protagonists, arguably giving the woman the biggest arc than the man. I think it’s my favorite SRK acting performance ever – he really inhabited harry. This movie really is the halfway point between an Imtiaz Ali film and an SRK film.

    Secret Superstar
I’ve never seen a movie in any industry portray and embody the psychological effects of domestic violence on a family, especially on a mother daughter relationship, better than this film in my life. The “superstar” portion of the movie is underdeveloped, but the “secret” portion of the movie is masterful and engaging storytelling. Even the little love interest and the little brother were all heart and just too good. I’ve never watched a movie while my eyes steamed with tears (happy, sad, scared, excited) for 2 hours straight!

    A Death in the Gunj
For all the reasons is the best movie.

Favorite Film You Watched for the First Time in 2017 That Was Not Released in 2017

    Drishyam
It’s kind of a skeletal movie, every scene feels like a power point slide lol. But i was impressed with the plot twists and how it all flowed together and fit together. If someone spent more time on the screenplay, this could be a masterful cat and mouse game movie. Also the rare movie that gives you a glimpse into the inner life of the damsels in distress – the mother and the daughters. They all displayed presence voice and agency, even if they ultimately used that agency to follow the Dad’s lead.

    Mirzya
Kudos to director ROM for experimenting with basic movie storytelling technique in a balls-to-the-wall way. This is more of an opera than a movie, more a work of art than a work of entertainment. I think he absolutely made the movie that he intended to make, and the actors filled their roles well, and the cinematography was amazing. Reminded me a little of The French Lieutenant’s Woman.

    And I’m making up a category. ..

The biggest bollywood story that no one is taking about

The rise of the Female Director. Look at all the movies this year that are directed by females and doing well. Lipstick under my burkha, Barely ki barfi, A Death in the Gunj for starters.

    • I love your made up category! Mine would be “fall of the southern films”. Hindi has had terrible box office, but so has everything else.

And I may have to steal your “most disappointing” answer, because that one was pretty horrible for me too.

      Like

    • I’m so happy you included Mirzya. This movie definitely deserves more love . Oh and this should be our another category: “Movies that deserved more love” ot “I don’t know why people don’t like it”.
And I know Mirzya is from 2016 but the soundtrack was my favourite and the most listened to durning all 2017. It’s so beautiful that I’m not able to stop the song in the middle, always wait till the end.

      Like

      • Mirzya was such a mixture for me. I love the soundtrack, once again Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy have proven why they are my favorite composer. And the musical sequences in the film on the big screen just took my breath away. But the rest of the plot kept that high emotional peak from the songs and somehow it ended up feeling too rich to me. I missed the subtlety, the sense of humor. But on the other hand, it felt like it was the exact movie the director wanted to make, he wanted that emotional high the entire time, it wasn’t a “failure” in that sense.

I think a film that is really interesting to compare it to is Rangoon. They are both similarly emotional with song sequences woven in in an unusual way. But with Rangoon I was left with the feeling that it was reaching for something more ambitious, trying to do something more than just be emotional. While Mirzya perfectly captured exactly what it was going for.

    Story: Anushka’s wedding

    Death: Shashi

    Most Disappointing: JHMS

Most Surprising: Mubarakan (it wasn’t completely stupid) and Raabta (not as bad as everyone said)

Best Soundtrack: JHMS (haven’t listened closely to many of the soundtracks this year…but Radha is definitely the catchiest song of the year)

Best (Hindi) Film: Anaarkali of Aarah but best Indian film is definitely Angamaly Diaries

        • Take Off was good – my first reaction when I started to watch TZH was ‘hang on, this is like Take Off’ and I later changed that to ‘it’s Take Off on steroids’

  18. Was busy. Therefore late reply.
    Here are my nominees

    Best gossip story :marriage
Tragic death :reema lagoo as it was so sudden. She Was favourite maa of all

Best soundtrack : zaalima from raees

Most disappointing movie :jaga jasoos. Promoted as an Indian fantasy movie like tintin. Took my nephew/nieces etc for the movie. But they got bored after 15 mins.

Most surprisingly good movie : bareily ki barfi small sweet movie with good acting.

Best character :rajkumar rao in trapped, bareily, Newton, shaadi mei zaroor aana, bose. Its terrifying how an actor can do so many diverse roles in same year and nail each to perfection. Watch for his desperation and expressions in trapped.

    Best movie :Newton /trapped.

Favourite movie:fukrey returns for its quirky comedy.

    Least favourite :jaga jasoos

Old movie seen recently :amar akbar Anthony a quirky funny movie.

    • No need to be sorry! If you look at the other comments, you will see that Rajkummar characters are a strong contender this year. A lot of people liked him.

  20. Story: Virushka (only because Anushka decided to get married at her “peak” which will inspire other girls to do so. It’s really unfair that women are asked to pause their personal lives whereas the men can do whatever they want)

Death: Shashi Kapoor (and then Reema Lagoo). Still not over Shashi though 😦

Most Disappointing: Raees. Runner up: Rangoon

Most Surprising: Mubarakan and Gentleman – both were good, watch once flicks.

    Best Soundtrack: Bareilly Ki Barfi

Best (Hindi) Film: Bareilly Ki Barfi (also best acting ensemble)

Favorite character: Seema Pahwa in BkB and Shubh Mangal Saavdhan

Least Favorite (Hindi) Film: I haven’t seen a lot of Hindi films, but from whatever I saw – Half Girlfriend. The book was bad enough, but the movie was even worse. Whatever little character building was in the book was completely ruined in the movie by OTT acting. Do you happen to have a review for this? I have so much of angst that I’d like to share lol

    • Excellent choices all around! A Gentleman was one of my favorite films of 2017, possibly my favorite (haven’t decided yet, I guess I will have to before writing today’s Editor’s Choice!)

I missed Half Girlfriend in theaters, was busy that Friday or something, and then the word of mouth was so baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad that even after it popped up on Netflix, I still haven’t been tempted. Feel free to put a diatribe against it in the Wednesday Watching Post, I am sure others who have suffered with you would love to join in the complaints.

  21. I’m so sorry, I hope i’m not too late! I have just completely lost interest in movies recently…

Filmi Gossip News Story of 2017 That Was Most Happy-Making:
This has to be Anushka and Virat’s wedding. Actually Naga Chaitanya and Samantha’s wedding was more exciting but Anushka and Virat’s was the best from the list.

    Biggest Filmi Death of 2017:
I would probably go with Vinod Khanna since I learned a lot about him after he passed away.

Most Disappointing (to you) After a Big Build Up Film of 2017:
I tried not to have many expectations from Judwaa 2 but it was still one of the more disappointing movies for me. I was hoping it would end up being as good as Main Tera Hero but I guess I’ll just have to wait for the next collaboration between Varun and his father.

Most Surprisingly Good (to you) After No Build Up Film of 2017:
This has to be Mubarakan! One of my favorite movies of the year 🙂

    Best Soundtrack of 2017:
Definitely going with A Gentleman for this one. Bandook Meri Laila, Chandralekha, and Baat Ban Jaaye are some of my favorite songs of the year.

    Best Character of 2017:
Out of the movies that I’ve seen, I would choose Vaidehi Trivedi (Alia) from Badrinath Ki Dulhania. Alia was great in the role and I really loved that character.

    The Best Film of 2017:
I really haven’t seen that many movies this year but I think the best movie is The Ghazi Attack. It was really well-made and had good acting.

    Your Favorite Film of 2017:
My favorite movie of the year is Badrinath Ki Dulhania. Such a fun movie that ends up making me cry. I would also say Baahubali 2 but that’s an obvious answer and not a Hindi movie.

Your Least Favorite Film of 2017:
I think this would be A Gentleman since I had good expectations for the movie based on the trailers/songs and I ended up hating the movie. It was a good-looking movie with no heart.

Favorite Film You Watched for the First Time in 2017 That Was Not Released in 2017:
This is a tie between Jhoom Barabar Jhoom and Om Shanti Om. Both movies have become favorites of mine this year!

    • You inspired me to google “football season” and find out when it ends (that is how out of it I am, I didn’t even know). So I will hope to see you more often after February 4th. Or at least in the spring when we get closer to October coming out.

I think someone else chose Badrinath as their most disappointing film! It’s so interesting how votes can split like that. The Ghazi Attack is an excellent choice for best film, similar to my choice Ittefaq, it is an original idea perfectly played out in every detail.

And yay!!!! Another Jhoom Barabar Jhoom lover!

      • Lol, basketball season goes into full swing after football! Just kidding, I’ll try to be around more. It’s always fun to read your content 🙂

From what I noticed, a lot of people didn’t like Badrinath or thought it was just okay. The only people who seemed to love the movie were people that like Varun or Alia.

        • Wait, there are sports YEAR ROUND???? Don’t people get tired of them????

Well, I will count on you to let me know if any Chicago team makes it to a big thingy, that’s when I start paying attention. Superbowl, World Series playoffs, whatever that basketball thing is. Not hockey.
