Happy Birthday Prithviraj!

I don’t know enough about him, and Hema exhausted me, so Prithviraj has to content himself with a simple dozen reasons I love him.

1.1. His third movie, at age 21, was a crazy negative rapist character in Stop Violence, and he still made an impression! (I haven’t been able to find a copy, but you can check out moviemavengal’s review here)

2. At 24, in his 21st movie (so hard working!) he rocketed to stardom with Classmates, and helped bring in a new era of rom-coms.

3. He straddles the old and new age of Malayalam cinema, starting in 2002 before the new age revolution brought on by films like Rithu, and has smoothly continued into the new era.

4. He has remained faithful to Malayalam cinema, despite hit films in Tamil, and 2 Hindi films, he keeps returning to his home language.

5. He keeps his personal life lowkey, but not private.  There are publically available photos of his wife and daughter, he isn’t trying to hide his status as a family man.  But it doesn’t seem to be as crazily promoted and publicized as the private life of movie stars can get in the Hindi industry.

6. He’s tall!  5’11” from what I can find, which is shorter than I expected.  But probably still well over average.  Certainly he carries himself like a tall man, not afraid to dominate the screen and loom over his co-stars, in a way that is unique and powerful.

7. Classmates!  Someday someone will post good song videos on youtube, but until then we have to make due with this.

8. We can see songs from the Classmates rip off, Chocolate.  It’s a cute movie too, and it shows how Prithviraj could so easily have just played variations on his cocky romantic hero for the rest of his career.

9. But he didn’t do that, instead choosing to play roles ranging from a serious doctor in Ayalum Njanum Thammil;

10. To an idealistic film pioneer in Celluloid.

11.  And then there’s his Hindi roles!  Truly, I don’t know of any other serious actor/major star who would be willing to turn himself into a total object of sexualization for a female focused romance!  Shahrukh did “Dard-E-Disco”, but that was just one song.  Aiyya is like “Dard-E-Disco”, but for the whole movie!

12.  And Aurangzeb.  That signature cockiness and sort of bad boy swagger is almost completely hidden, and he isn’t even supposed to be the main hero of the film.  And yet, as I describe in my review, he is still the glue that holds it all together.

  1. I want to recommend a Tamil movie of Prithviraj’s that I liked very much, though apparently it wasn’t so hot at the box office: Kaaviya Thalaivan. He has an interesting role in it, as an actor in a theater group during the 1920’s/30’s.

  2. Another reason is that he did not mind playing the second fiddle to Mammotty in Pokkiri Raja (which was remade in Hindi as Boss starring Akshay Kumar).And he’s going to direct a movie right now when he’s at the peak of his career.And no,he isn’t acting in it.Mohanlal is doing the honors.

  3. He’s also producing and acting in a movie about Karna and the director is the guy who directed ‘Ennu ninde Moideen.’ Speaking about adaptations Kunal Kapoor will be in Veeram,an adaptation of Shakespear’s Macbeth.He’ll be a 13th century warrior and the movie will also be inspired by the Vadakkan Pattukal(Northern Ballads).The costumes and the look will be similar to that of Prithviraj’s Urumi.

    • I love Karna! Especially when they go completely off script and give him a happy ending (Thalapathi!). Although if it is the same director as Ennu Ninde Moideen, probably no happy ending.

  4. Oh yes, it will probably drag for ever and ever and Karna will die tragically.After that his brothers will perform his last rites and declare that they would have renounced their claim for the throne if only they had known the truth.Big gesture when it is too late to do any good.Just like in ENM.And Kunti would probably be blamed as usual.
