DEAR ZINDAGI TRAILER!!!! The Greatest Birthday Gift of All! He Really Does Love Us!!!!

Yaaaaaaay!  A full length song trailer!!!!  It looks nice.  And I kind of wonder if we are only getting this, a song trailer for a song already released, because of the behind the scenes drama.

Trailer!  Trailer trailer!!!

Nice, right?  And am I the only one getting the vibe that Alia is falling in love with Shahrukh?  Not necessarily that he reciprocates, but the way she looks at him is kind of like the way I look at him.  Wouldn’t be surprised if part of the plot is her having a crush, and him gently moving her past it.

In other news, they may have found an Ali Zafar replacement!  Well, partial replacement.  Tahir Raj Bhasin, who was the bad guy in Mardaani and is currently finishing Force 2.  And who is also very very handsome.

Tahir Raj Bhasin

That’s the easy part, finding another hot young actor to play one of many men in Alia’s life (Kunal Kapoor, Aditya Roy Kapoor, also in the cast).  The hard part is going to be the songs, since Ali writes all his own stuff.  I’ll be curious if they just leave the songs in the movie, figuring no one will notice it’s Ali’s voice.  Or if there is a rush to write replacement pieces.  Or if they end up with just no songs at all.

Either way, it makes me curious if that is why this particular song trailer was released today.  A song that is definitely not from Ali Zafar, and which focuses mostly on the Alia-Shahrukh relationship, so they don’t have to worry about Ali Zafar scenes.

  1. I’m not the SRK fan that you are;), but I have never been so excited for a SRK movie like I am for this one! This song trailer is incredible and the movie can’t possibly live up to my expectations. These are the kinds of roles I want him in…bearded and understated! Chak De! India is, hands down, my favorite SRK performance. And, in a way, I think his “older” character in Dilwale also had this more mature, understated thing going on that is really working for him at this point in his career. I have high hopes that Ali’s The Ring will do the same for him (and Raees at least will have him playing a more anti-hero character…we’ll see how gritty it actually is…). You must have watched Anupama Chopra’s Beneath the Surface interview with him in Lisbon, right? His look for that film is kind of breath-taking, if you know what I mean:) That tattoo…

Back to Dear Zindagi…Alia Bhatt has completely won me over and I credit Erin and Matt over at Bollywood is for Lovers podcast (great if you don’t know it!) for waking me up to how amazing she is. They are always gushing over her and rightly so.

    • Oh, and I’m a big Ali Zafar fan, so I’m so sad to see this news…I was hoping it was a done enough deal and that they would be able to keep him in. His voice is pretty recognizable so while I hope that his songs at least make it in, I’m not holding my breath. I’m a big Mere Brother Ki Dulhan fan and “Madubhala” is one of my top 10 filmi songs of all time. At least Kunal Kapoor gets to stay…there’s not enough of him on my screen…can’t wait for his Veeram.

      • Yeah, I’ve got a friend who is a big Ali Zafar fan, I haven’t had the heart to break this to her yet. It’s also too bad, because he is a really strong screen presence. I was excited to see Ali and Kunal and Aditya in supporting roles, it would make Alia’s character that much stronger if the “stars” are just there to support her. But now it’s some nobody who wouldn’t do anything beyond a supporting role anyway.

As an Ali Zafar fan, you should definitely try to track down Tere Bin Laden: Dead or Alive. Ali has a really great cameo in it. And, obviously, the original Tere Bin Laden, which is brilliant, but Ali is less sexy.

    • Ha! I’ve got a post scheduled for later today on the Lisbon interview, and my main take away is “If his shirt wasn’t unbuttoned, I would have turned this off after 2 minutes.”

Also, is Lisbon in Spain or Italy? I think I said Italy in my post, but now I am doubting myself.

Oh, and have you seen Saathiya? No beard, but super understated SRK performance. And a supporting role, really just an extended cameo. I would also add to second half of Dilwale SRK, second half of Jab Tak Hain Jaan SRK. He is sooooooooo much better in “modern day” than in his stupid flashback period.

(I just realized I am asking you geography questions because I’m thinking of you as a librarian! Now I also kind of want to ask for help tracking down news clipping and requesting obscure books.)

      • “If his shirt wasn’t unbuttoned, I would have turned this off after 2 minutes.” haha! Lisbon’s in Portugal and whatever they are feeding him there on set is working! Isn’t it awful, but I can’t even remember him in Saathiya…I love Rani, but Vivek is blah for me so I may have blocked out that whole movie. Yes, definitely second half of Jab Tak Hain Jaan, too.

PS I’m a rare book curator so I can help with the obscure books, both old and new, generally;)

        • Project Gutenberg has ruined me for rare books. I spent years of my childhood tracking down stuff like the sequel to Pollyanna (you get to find out which boy she marries!), or the more obscure Gene Stratton-Porters (Man that woman was RACIST! She makes Trump look like, well, a slightly less racist person). And now I can just go online and read them at my leisure! The only things left are the ones that haven’t hit the magical copyright expiration point. Do you know the author Emilie Loring? Kind of like Grace Livingston Hill but less religious? I LOVE her, and the libraries don’t even keep her in stock any more, so I have to grab up whatever trashy paperback novels from 1960 that I can find in used bookstores until her copyright expires and some kind soul puts them all online for me. Oh! Also nursing books from the 1950s! When I was a kid, you could just get them at your local library, now all of a sudden they are in the rare books collection, and I need special permission to handle them.

That was a completely useless and off topic digression, but I have strong feelings about the whole out-of-print/obscure book world.

  2. This is a nice song.
And it so reminds me of Being Erica!
I’m wondering if they really took the idea… Which would be good, because Being Erica is a wonderful TV-series, one of my favourites. And it’s so full of life, love and wisdom – the song actually gives similar vibes too. Also, from what we see, their relationship seem very Tom and Erica like – therapist/patient with the taste of mature friendship. Don’t know whether they used that special Being Erica therapy twist… if my speculations are right at all. )))

    • I had never heard of that show, but now I just wiki’d it and I kind of want to see it! I would love it if they use that twist. But either way it seems like that drifting young woman who bonds with an older mentor as she comes into her own and finds happiness is the set up. In a huge meta kind of a way, I love it that Mega Star Shahrukh is being used to serve the journey of an unhappy young woman, instead of the other way around, the pretty young woman being the impetus that makes our hero grow up or whatever.
